Exactly two years ago we started out posting TikToks during the pandemic as a silly way to pass time and would’ve never thought it could turn into what it has. With an homage to what some of our first viral videos were, here’s a compilation of some of our top German & American culture clashing content. Part 2 coming soon!
We hope you had fun looking back through these “vintage” Calvin & Habs clips, make sure to subscribe for more content like this and drop a comment on which video you’d like to see included in the next compilation.
We’re beyond grateful for every single person that has supported us along the way because we still think it’s a little surreal.
Follow us on Instagram and get in touch with us here:
/ calvinandhabs
We also apologize to the people in our buildings who’ve had to deal with our yelling.

"Then the business should not exist!" Seriously, restaurants in the US treat waitstaff as if they're useless when, in reality, a restaurant without waitstaff is literally just a large open room to sit in.
@_Dropkick
@_Dropkick Год назад
a restaurant without a waitstaff is called a buffet
@camloch
@camloch Год назад
@@_Dropkick but don't buffets have waitstaff? I'd say bussers are waitstaff since they have to clean up after a customer, even if utensils and dishware are turned in by the customer to a conveyor belt; cashiers become waitstaff if there's no kiosk to order at since they take your order and payment; attendants at sections are technically waitstaff if they're not actively cooking something because they serve you something.
@Chrisko1492
@Chrisko1492 Год назад
People are too lenient with waiters/waitresses. They are in on the scam. They earn usually more (with tips) than their counterparts in Europe where the minimum wage is higher. The restaurant owners profit, the waiters/waitresses profit - only the customer is scammed by having to pay more than the food and „service“ (wow, bringing food from A to B, so hard /s) are worth. American customers, don‘t just hate on the owners, hate on the staff too!!!!! They are in on the scam!!! Also, the kitchen staff doesn‘t get tips even though they do actual work (unlike the waiters).
@davidchapman7350

@@camloch Buffets also typically have drink servers, which are a type of waitstaff. And I agree with your original message.
@mbirth
@mbirth Год назад
The waitstaff WANTS it that way. If they would be salaried, they'd get paid salary for a job any untrained person can do. But because of the tipping culture they rake in lots of money just by carrying around plates and smiling. "Oh you want that $100 bottle of wine? Let me get that for you. Here. And now my $20 tip, please." That's the reason they rather complain about "bad tippers" instead of taking on a career at McDonald's where they'd be paid a proper amount over living wage.

@@onionsieglinde8718 Not just state and federal, but also often _local_ (both county and city) taxes as well. I’ll use some examples I am most familiar with, in Albuquerque† the sales tax‡ is 7.75%, in the suburb Rio Rancho it is 7.6875%, but in a different suburb Corrales it’s 7.8125%. So, right around Cottonwood Mall, where all three meet up, you would expect there’s going to be 3 different levels of taxes based on address, right? Nope, there’s at least 3 more combinations of jurisdiction right there as well! So, within a 1 km radius from that mall, there’s like 6 maybe even 7 or 8 different sales tax rates, just crossing the street could change a price on a 99.99$ item by a few cents. †: yes, the city from Breaking Bad ‡: despite everyone calling it “sales tax” it is not actually a sales tax, but a Gross Receipts Tax, which is levied upon all of a business’s revenue, meaning that not only do you have tax on the 5$ mug, but you have tax on your restaurant bill before we even get to the matter of including a tip.

A dinner and movie theater near us includes an 18% gratuity in the price of food. Seems like I remember 18% from somewhere I've lived..... About a year ago I ate in an Italian restaurant visiting in another state - the menu explained that tipping was not appropriate as they pay their staff good wages. There was a $4 charge that is some kind of carry over from Italy proper which the owner explained to us. Oddly, the percentage built into the food cost there was....18%. Excellent food btw. This idea seems to be catching on slowly here, but mostly in higher end establishments. It may seem odd, but ask serving staff in many food places how they feel about $20 an hour with no or very small tips versus keeping tips - they want to keep tips about 80% of the time. Just my very unscientific experience asking this. Love your channel - Danke Sehr!

The real reason why sales tax isn't usually included is because big corporate stores are lazy. There are different sale tax rules in every state and even county. Instead of labeling each item (or place on the shelves) for the location, they just program the POS system to do the math when the item is scanned. That's why many small stores with only one location include sales tax. Things aren't happening under the table, tax was just already included.

I don't understand. Are they stupid ? Or are they doing it on purpose because they think their VIEWERS ARE STUPID??! Thé other day they showed "Revenge of thé Sith" and they followed it with the one where Anakin is a child ! What the fack ??! Next week it is Thé Return of the Jedi, probably followed by Star Wars, a New Hope . They systematically do this with every film series, regardless of the beginning and continuity of the story. WHY? POURQUOI ??? And why does no-one else seem to be bothered about it hère in France ? It really does my head in.

I’m gonna defend the American calendar system real quick. M/d/y When flipping through a physical calendar it’s already made for a specific year so that’s the least important. If your looking for sept. 25, but your calendar is currently in march, you would want to find Sept. first so you can then find the 25. Making month more important info than needs to be used, before the number date. (This is probably useless but I wanted to defend m/d/y for some reason)
@MemekingJag
@MemekingJag Год назад
I see what you mean, although it's certainly a way bigger problem now with typical shortened dates with electronics like 9/8/23. There are a lot of reasonable reasons for other imperial units the US stays with. Fahrenheit is more useful and accurate for the typical range of human environments, inches and feet are well suited to many day to day measurements, where a cm is too small a unit but a meter being too large, miles being a round fraction of the average travelling distance on foot in a day.
@thesong7877
@thesong7877 Год назад
There's no moral quandry with the tipping and expectation of. Never tip, not for anything, period. That is the morally right choice, on every spec of dirt in America, as well as globally. Writing dates month-day makes far more sense than day-month, because that's how calendars work. You don't open a calendar to the page of "day 20's" and then find the right month on the page, you open the calandar to the month then find the day.
@TheFeldhamster
@TheFeldhamster Год назад
But only if you use the year-month-day format, which is perfectly acceptable and widely used in Europe. To stick to your analogy, you'd get a calendar of the appropriate year, then open it to the respective month. The problem isn't the order of month-day per se, but the mixed order of month-day-year. Tickets with either, 2023-10-09 or 9.10.2023 are fine in Europe, a ticket with American 10/9/2023 feels "disordered" to us.
