Bristol Plays Music is proud to present a new video performance by its flagship jazz ensemble, Bristol Young Jazz Ambassadors.
Bristol Young Jazz Ambassadors is an exciting, experimental and cross-genre band for promising jazz instrumentalists aged 14-18 years. During lockdown, members of the band rehearsed virtually to create this rendition of Abdullah Ibrahim’s track Calypso Minor, arranged and produced by the ensemble’s director, Craig Crofton.
Members of Bristol Young Jazz Ambassadors featured in the video are Rachel Raynes (Sax), Conrad Lovegrove (Sax), Ellen McAdam (Sax), Miranda Keating (Sax), Tom Wyeth (Keys), Ben Lammin (Guitar), Liam Campbell (Bass), Miles Figes-Jones (Breaks).
The video was made with the financial support of The Earthsong Foundation and Arts Council England.
Playing a variety of styles, the group explores a range of genres including classic swing, funk, and hip hop. Covering the more straight ahead jazz and vocal standards, BYJA develops tuition in improvisation and ensemble playing skills, where members are encouraged to enhance their musical individuality.
