Camaro Tachometer Not Working

Sometimes if you don't drive your car for a while and your battery dies, bad things happen, in this case my Camaro tachometer not working and a million warning lights flooding the dashboard. Let me walk you through how I troubleshoot this problem. The solution may very well work for any other car that is highly computerized as well.

I had the same issue on the window. I removed certain fuses from the fuse box for a few min, replaced and it cleared it. Also you can disconnect the battery from the positive front jumper bolt (left side under hood) instead of going to the trunk. The wire is hot so be sure not to ground it. As for the same issues on the dash I replaced the ECM. Total headache. Glad your up and going now!

I feel like modern electronics (as if a decade old car counts...) are too flaky. I miss the 90s when car electronics were "air conditioning", "cd player", "cruise control". You couldn't break that stuff by killing your battery.

My 2010 camaro is doing this same exact thing with the tach not working, stabilitrak stuff on dash, and check engine light! Bout to disconnect the battery and hopefully that fixes it! Had it sitting for a while so if that doesn't work, gonna get a new battery probably! Thanks for the vid bro!

No problem. Just make sure to leave it disconnected for a couple hours to be sure.

The tach on my '19 didn't work on my way to work yesterday. Never had that happen before. Was driving fine. After work I started it up and was fine. Still under warranty. Heading to the dealer tomorrow.

Could you please tell me the problem when you find out? I have a 16 and I’m having problems

@@jaredgreen2235 it only happened the one time in a year and a half. I decided not to take it in. Been fine. Good luck.

I would get the tach issue after low battery or if it got really warm like shutting off after being in traffic on a hot day. I found out it was a crank position sensor going out. If it does not read the sensor correctly, then you get no tach and the stabilitrack warning..
@brkntires

And yes, I have to do each window twice..

A CASE (Crank Angle Sensor Error) can definitely cause the tach to malfunction. In my particular case I'm 99% sure it was the battery instead but if you have a crank sensor problem, that's going to be a more expensive and involved repair. Gaining access to that thin metal ring is a PITA.

You're correct about weird behavior with low voltage. Maybe it's a GM thing. Had an older Buick that was doing some ODD things. Explained to a buddy. Says it needs a battery. But it starts and drives fine. He says trust me. He was right.

I just want to know one thing.... Did the problem reoccur because I brought a brand new battery and still got the same problem... And sometime when you disconnect the battery it take a minute for the computer to read every code again that's why I'm asking you did this ever reoccur
@ChrisCamaro
@ChrisCamaro 2 года назад
Not so far. I'm pretty sure it happened in the first place because of how little I drive the car and the battery just got low. You try to start it low and if it doesn't turn over it just brings the voltage down even more. By the time you're cranking the engine at something like 7 or 8 volts, every piece of electronics in the car just goes haywire. You have to have a strong battery to do this reset procedure.

Did this happen again? I disconnected battery. Works fine drive alittle and dose it again no tach / speedometer hard shifts. < had ecm flashed and tcm reprogram same thing keeps happening

Do you have a loose battery terminal or weak battery? Sounds like something is freaking out the computer on a regular basis.

Does your speedo read 240? Seriously. Ambitious.
@ChrisCamaro
@ChrisCamaro 3 года назад
That's because the speedo has to work in both Canada and the US where you have metric and imperial. If you set it to metric, 240 kph is within the realm of possibility I guess so the numbers have to go that high.

Because you do not have a enough battery now to start it

I've heard people refer to it as a ground issue through the frame rail
@ChrisCamaro
@ChrisCamaro 2 года назад
Very well could be a ground fault. I've seen lots of very strange phenomena resulting from low vehicle voltage however and the electrical system of cars these days is so complex there's no telling what the heck the problem is. All I can say for certain is that in my experience, solid state electronics are picky about what voltage you supply them with. The datasheet of any given chip will call for a specific range of voltages and if you go outside of that, God help you because any sort of bizarre behaviour could result. I once bricked my computer trying to tune it... or so I thought... and after fighting to reprogram it for hours I was nearly ready to buy a new ECM when it occurred to me to just disconnect the battery. Low and behold that's all it took for the next programming attempt to work. Computers work in mysterious ways.
