Visiting the Killing Fields and S21 in Phnom Penh: A Somber Journey Through History
In this video, I take you on a deeply moving visit to two of Phnom Penh's most significant and tragic sites: the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21). These memorials serve as stark reminders of Cambodia's dark history during the Khmer Rouge regime.
Throughout the video, I provide essential information for those planning to visit these sites, including tips on transportation, entry fees, and guided tours. I also share important historical facts to give context to the horrors that took place here.
This visit was profoundly emotional and difficult, and I candidly share my personal experiences and reactions. It's a heavy journey, but one that I believe is crucial for understanding and honoring the memory of those who suffered. I also explain why I chose not to bring my young children on this visit, as the graphic and disturbing nature of these sites is not suitable for them.
Despite these heartbreaking chapters in their history, the strength and resilience of the Cambodian people shine through. Their ability to overcome such horrors and rebuild their lives is truly inspiring. Today, Cambodia is a vibrant and beautiful country, with its people demonstrating an incredible spirit of kindness and hope.
Visiting the Killing Fields and S21 is challenging, but it is a necessary step in acknowledging the past and ensuring that such atrocities are never repeated. Join me as I navigate these heart-wrenching memorials, reflect on the importance of remembering history, and celebrate the remarkable strength of the Cambodian people.

My Dear! This is very touching, like you said "We are all human's and we must do better by each other" We all bleed the same blood And to know the history is to not make the same mistakes over again. The struggle was and is real this is why the C ambodians are so kind and humble because of their past every race has a history and struggle we must Love one another regardless of race color or greed we were all marvelously made by God. You did the people of Cambodia proud and for that I am very proud of you young lady you are amazing and caring. Love you Mom! ❤ 🙏🏾 🙂

I lived through the Khmer Rouge regime, where 35 percent of my family members died from execution and starvation. Watching your video reminds me of a terrifying time when I struggled to survive. Thank you for your kindness and sympathy towards the victims of the Khmer Rouge. I wish you and your family happiness and a fantastic journey the land of wonder!

My house was only a few blocks away and I was in my last year of my high school there. We were forced to move out of the city to work in the rice fields and to dig cannals and most of them died from starvation and exhaustion. Only memory lives on as I had to live through this horrific genocide. I've returned to visit my sole surviving sister who currently still lives there since my retirement from US to heal the past. Cambodians had suffered so much not very long ago. Happy travels and stay safe from a genocide survivor ✌️

Had to watch this in two parts, so distressing. And to think that some so-called benevolent, Imperial Power, decided to put Pol Pot back in power after the people had managed to overthrow him. Yes, the Cambodian people are amazing.

It was a really heavy experience but undoubtedly worthwhile. Fortunately I could step outside the gates and see happy families and school children and know that they did, somehow, overcome the horrors. One of the many striking things to me was that they were able to, after some time, shift the memorial day from the Day of Enduring Anger to the Day of Remembrance.

I think the French were terrified of SEA, the jungles after the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in North Vietnam in the 50s. Must’ve been outraged back in France. The French leaders and soldiers were probably sick and tired of the jungle, just done, and after France doing what they did at the Geneva Conference, whatever happened afterwards is whatever to the French
