On April 18, 1972, I was assigned to fly a mission to Phnom Penh, Cambodia from my airbase in Vietnam to support the US Embassy in Cambodia. We flew several embassy personnel to a small village near Lake Tonle Sap, went to an area near Kompong Thom and picked up three NVA prisoners and returned to Phnom Penh. On the way back, we determined that we would run out of fuel before reaching the airport. Through gallant efforts of Cambodian officials, we found a small village which had a cache of Jet fuel hidden in a bunker in the event of an emergency. We used the four barrels for our two helicopters and safely returned to Phnom Penh. At the time, US military personnel were prohibited from operating in Cambodia.

Thank you very much for taking time to produce this very intersting video clip about Cambodia. As refugee from Cambodia in 1975 to the US and helicopter pilot graduated from US Army Aviation School in Ozark, Alabama in the 70s. We are eager to see old footages to remind us the old time. To escape Cambodia on April 18, 1975. I flew to Kompong Chhnang, over Tonle Sap, Siem Reap, Odor Mean Chhey and Surin, Thailand.

Kong Chhay Hong was the top combatant and bravest Cambodian helicopter pilot. He was trained by the US in Vietnam to fly helicopter, I believe in 1971. He was the last helicopter to leave Olympic Stadium in the morning of April 18, 1975. He was resigned in Orange County, California and passed away about 3 years ago. I do not remember the full name of Say. I believe that Say did not escape and perished under the communist Khmer Rouge. For your information, I flew out the Stadium with around 25 other helicopters in the dark of night around 2 o'clock in the morning on April 18. 1975. Kong Chhay Hong left the Stadium around 7 AM that day and picked all his family up from the rooftop and all were resettled safely in the US.

Thank you James for sharing your rare footage of Cambodia during the Vietnam War/ Cambodian Civil War. I was an infant in Battambang as you and your fellow soldiers were flying from Phnom Penh ("P" is pronounced) to Kampong Thom and back. My father (went missing in '75 after the fall) was a soldier with Lon Nol regime up in Battambang, battling the VC and KR there. You mentioned of the bomb craters, those were probably from the U.S. bombings. I still have relatives who are living Kamopong Thom which I hope to visit them one day. It's interesting to see Phnom Penh Int'l Airport (aka Ponchentong Terminal) how it looked back then as your chopper approaching to land. I saw a another footage of the airport which was attacked by the VC in '71 where several aircrafts and fuel depots were destroyed. I first landed at the airport on my first visit back in '95 to Phnom Penh. Back then I could only visit Phnom Penh, Takeo, and Kampong Cham. I wanted to visit Battambang, but it was dangerous as the KR were still fighting with the gov't troops. I haven't been back since. Have you visited Cambodia since you were there back in '72? Anyhow, your footage is part of Cambodian history and thank you again for sharing. BTW, I love the Huey helicopter. I first saw several Huey helicopters landed and took off when I was in Thailand back in late '79.

@@Nikonuser Don't worry, you're not missing much. The first thing I noticed and was amazed at, was the cleanliness and beauty Cambodia used to be. I'm an American that's lived 2 miles from the Palace and 1 mile from the round-about in your video for the last 4 years. Sadly, the Cambodians treat their country like it's a trash can and it's horribly dirty. I'd advise Thailand if you really want to visit SEA. Thanks for sharing your video.

I have recently visited Cambodia: In the fall of 2023 I crossed from Thailand into Poipet and drove to Siem Reap to visit Angkor Wat. The people were so nice and pleasant; I wish I could have gone to Phnom Penh.

Wow nice video indeed. Thank you for sharing and speak the truth. Yeah thats the press for you. Two American helicopters flying around and they said no American soldiers were around.😂 you could have flown in drop bombs and flown out still they probably say the KR did that or whoever…50 years since that day you have flown over Cambodian sky and kept all that pictures till today???

I actually flew three different missions from Can Tho, Vietnam to Cambodia. April 18th, May 9th, and May 23rd. They were for various missions in support of the US Embassy. Yes I have kept my film and photos for fifty years: I'm just getting around to digitizing them. Sadly, I didn't take that many movies (film) as the film was hard to get and get processed. I wish I had more so I could make more videos. I will make one about Vietnam when I have a chance.
