I think many people know about legitimate data collection and sharing. Not everyone, somehow, but most. They know they're seeing ads for the shoes they recently searched pop up on Facebook. Most don't know the extent of it but even those that know the legitimate extent, which is bothersome enough, shouldn't be ok with companies going beyond what's legitimate especially if it is being used to sway elections. Again, everyone knows about opposition research and smear campaigns but this appears to be more than that. I've never liked smear campaigns. It's one thing to talk yourself up while stating your positions and simultaneously pointing out your opponents flaws but it's something else to play on people's fears and and misrepresent facts to basically slander them. One is manipulative. The fact that people's data was collected in nefarious ways to accomplish that is worse.
My dad always said, if you are receiving a service for free and you are not paying for a product, then YOU ARE THE PRODUCT. That's what social media turn us into. Products that bring in advertising and profit for their companies.
Just like mass media! They've been doing it to us right from the beginning! Their hypocrisy is incredibly hilarious.... I can't stop laughing that people are swallowing this double standard 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Like Manafort and Giuliani and even Michael Cohen. The money trail is not clear and money laundering, dark money and Citizens United all work to mess w our Republic and our democratic principles.

I have read that this organisation was also involved in influencing the pro-Brexit vote on the side of Brexit. This should be investigated to determine if their influence was toxic.
Anime freak17 Who for? I am a left winger, and while the EU is a neoliberal organization, which I don't support, but it's going to diminish the trade for the UK.
Rhod Jones... only if there is an investigation into the mainstream media to figure out why so many people don't believe in the results of the democratic process when the vote doesn't go the way the mainstream media says it should go.
huh? ok, so he created profiles based on the information harvested from facebook, and then what? for this cultural stratified change to be effective it would have to be integrated into Alphabet, Zeta, Twitter products, possibly even include voting and tax records. facebook is not that influential anymore.
Another English twisted creation. Blame it on Mad Cow disease or inbreeding. I haven't used Facebook - nor watched Game of Thrones - it feels like I live in different world. Interesting but scary how the entertainment industry is using techniques to manipulate societies.
I'm amazed at how simple this was. Put simply, in the source code of a page is an ID (which you can view by right clicking and pressing view source) - the ID represent a person; at the time we could create ads which targeted people by ID, by simply uploading the list of IDs to facebook's ad manager tool. So if we uploaded these IDs into specific campaigns, we already knew a person by name at this point ... that's the core of what was available then, but is no-longer available now; you can't upload groups of IDs to create ads anymore. You have to target people by attributes, such as pages they like, or gender, or marital status... personally, it was a way to create T-Shirts with peoples names on, so they would see an advert for a t-shirt featuring their name, which inevitably resulted in a lot of clicks because it was so personalised. We could merge their name with any other attribute, for example if they liked a page about Horses... then we could advertise a t-shirt that has a witty catchphrase about horses, or even include their birthdate, so it said " Established 1/4/1985 " in a trendy looking roman-style font underneath a picture of a horse. I never imagined that this t-shirt business boom was in parallel with political data mining, but it makes sense. All of the data was available if the user's profile settings were set to "public" - if not, no data was accessible. So by that merit, Facebook technically didn't facilitate the data mining... however the fact that you could create ads which were powered by these "ID lists" was a grey area - they updated their marketing terms of service very quickly, and the name-targeting fad was over within weeks.
I'm glad someone like him is speaking up and bringing light to this topic. Also, wishing him the best of luck as he is naming all these high profile people. Hope nothing bad happens to him.
Do some research Chris, he's not telling us anything new, he's just putting a new spin on an old story. This fool is lying through his teeth, dressing up like some fake punk barbie doll, such a joke. All he's doing is trying, and succeeding, in getting some promotion where he paints himself as the hero done wrong so that he can rebound into a better paying job with another equally corporate online marketing PR firm who'll pay him well to be an online admin dogsbody. Guys like him are a a dime a dozen on the streets of soho, I can't tell if he's selling touch typing skills or blow jobs. Cheap, low class mutton dressed as lamb. His accent is the worst, feigning a well spoken accent when he's really some awful low class american mongrel type. Tacky, awful, lying scum, yuk.
Good on him for trying to do the right thing, it's very sad that these things do happen unfortunately but guess what I for one am glad he was the one to do it bcos he has what it take in him to expose them, they would have got someone else to do it anyway and prob someone with little conscious who would be able to walk away from it. Good on him for doing the right thing.
Atir do your research please, don't be fooled. This guys is cashing in for his own selfish gain, he was cast out from his job, he didn't quit to tell all he got fired and had no other option. This fool is lying through his teeth, dressing up like some fake punk barbie doll, such a joke. Jeremy Fox: You're full of it and clearly have a fake axe to grind. Is your issue that he outed CA or Facebook? Did the gay vegan part get to you? Most of your posts is just spurious personal attacks on a person you don't even know. Where is this almighty research that you speak of? Don't bother posting links to Breitbart, InfoWars, or any other bullshit either. They are the very definition of fake news.
You are out of line! Channel 4 has released video of CA officers confirming their disgusting tactics. As to this whistleblower, I don't much care about his own agenda - all I care about are the facts, if he imparts the facts on his way to his own personal agenda, I have got no problem with that! The facts in the Channel 4 programme show corrupt criminal activity in the UK and USA at the very least. Its time to nail CA and Facebook. These companies worked [together] on the Trump Alamo campaign in the same office [together]! Money changed hands for Facebook to turn up and work in their offices, this is serious.... Facebook was not duped, they were hand-in-glove with these people. Zuck is a piece of sh**
If I do it, it is "persuasion." If my opponent does it, it is "manipulation." Advertisers, politicians, salespeople have been doing it forever. What has changed is the sheer volume of data available and the computing resources to use it.
Good job, Chris, for routing them out. Your integrity and ethical will standard stand the test of time. Many lives have been lost and blood spilled because of FB's questionable ethics.
This isn't desperate though is it, this is an individual whistleblower whistleblowing something he viewed as wrong, is he doing this due to a movement, can you see anyone else from the company do this as well? Conned or duped? We don't know how much of an effect it had because it's pervasive psychology, maybe no effect, maybe some effect. This did actually happen though and these people were hired at least to disinform people and at worst to brainwash. This is the new form of propaganda.
suburben yobbo People use every issue to push an agenda, there is no such thing as unbiased news cause as soon as you focus on one issue, another issue is sidelined, the difference here is that this is a global, intrastate problem which actually should lead to ramifications from the abusers of power
It was also a pivotal role in manipulating and swaying the hearts and minds of 51% British voters to vote Brexit, by responding with key narratives and psychologically packaging unconscious messages to manipulate British voters..
Why does this person need a goal? He's revealed psychological warfare on a global scale to influence democracy. That should be illegal for an organisation to do.
He saying hypocritical because he wants to sounds cool. Like I am cleverer than you suckers falling for the conventional narrative. So don't expect a proper justification.
Patrick Sheedy You obviously have not been paying attention to Google. Google owns and RU-vid and controls it and they uave been censoring just about anything thats not left sided, this is coming from an objective person
Why do you think every single website now asks for your login details to get prices, information, apply for jobs, etc.? Because they sell the data to make money. How else do you think they make money?
Haters will always hate. Stop hating on successful business models. They said they just enhance your fears or hopes, they don't create them. That is a business opportunity. Am happy they helped in Kenya in 2013 and 2017. Kudos Cambridge Analytica, very successful in your work, I mean elections have to be won by the smart people.
why do you think facebook is worth so much money? because of skimpy girls photos? its because its been used for these analytic procedures since its emergence. It just that the establishment is losing at its own game and using one company as a scapegoat to effect the major dicrepencies of current politics
Oops, he said the quiet part out loud "I don't want to work for the Alt right" so his remorse is about who was helped with the info and not about doing what he did.
I just looked at ALL my well hidden, barely exposed "Privacy Settings" It was loaded with "EVERYBODY" having access to my profile, including every company ever connected to Facebook. I changed the settings, then I could only DEACTIVATE my facebook. NOT DELETE IT.. Facebook says that takes 90 days' I don't think that's even legal.
Do you agree ALL, the 2016 Election was thrown to one side? Not a fair election. I was to believe that America is to have a fair and free election which was not granted. I totally agree that 2016 Election is a do-over! I am sending out Love and fairness to the World!
The only reason this guy came forward the link with Trump. He's cashing in on the situation. It's important he has stepped up, there are ppl out there that wouldn't know otherwise. Most of us aren't so stupid an knew this was going on before. Let's face it, Facebook has helped Governments and private businesses data mine for profit.
its not just facebook. Its google, its all your google searches, its all your youtube videos you watch, netflix info. Go on your phone and type onto google "location history", google tracks your location and collects data on you through your phone and keeps a record of where you have been at all times and allows you to access it! They know your entire life....
Cambridge Analytica's claims about the whistle-blower have to be viewed in the lens of the fact that they have obviously profiled him in the same way that they have profiled so many members of the general public and now they are maliciously messing with him. Bad actors! I have no respect for a company that drives people like sheep by manipulating their personal fears. Shame on them!
Pizza Hut tried to influence me to get 2 mediums instead of the 1 large I wanted....Then, those SOB's tried to get me to buy a 2 liter Pepsi for $3...They should know I like COKE!!
