Thank you! Yes I’ll keep that in mind this summer. Maintaining a garden is more important than starting one but that’s also where the joy really begins. One of the advantages I have from living in PNW is abundant rain water for more than half of the year. I guess that’s why they call us the Evergreen State. The only months I need to water every week are June-August, give or take depending on how hot and dry it is each year. But generally I water deeply once a week during the growing seasons 😊
I live in zone 7b can I grow these in outdoor containers? I got two Camilla japonicas. Usually it’s advised to go 2 zones down to do so.. what is your experience?
I’m afraid I don’t have firsthand experience on that yet. I’ve only had Japonicas too. This is my first sasanqua and every source online seems to say the same thing - that they are less cold hardy but more sun tolerant than Japonicas. My Japonicas have been so good to me so far. They may have lost buds and leaves due to freeze burn but I haven’t lost a whole plant no matter how cold it gets here (I’m in 8b) but with the sasanqua.. I can’t say. I’ll keep sharing when I find out. Or if you’ve decided to try, I’d love to know how it goes!

I’m in zone 8b. I think some varieties are cold hardy down to zone 7 but I’m not too sure. I hope you find ones that are suitable in your zone. They’re so rewarding to grow.
I wish I was your videos before I purchased my camellia japanica. I have one that done leaves turned brown and another all the leaves curled. I hoping to repot them . Do u think that will help?
Hi, I’m sorry to hear that your camellias aren’t doing too well. It could be winter damage? What zone are you in? I’m in 8b PNW. Winter is usually not too harsh but if we have winter storms where temps drop below freezing, I’ll lose some buds for sure. They turn brown and die and fall off. Some leaves will do the same. But the plants themselves have always recovered. Always make sure to water very well before it freezes. I soak my containers until I see water drain out the bottom. This year I also hung up large clear tarp around my patio to protect them from strong wind and hard frost and as a result, they’re doing much better than the previous years. I haven’t experienced leaf curls with my camellias but I have a peach tree that had leaf curl disease last year so I can imagine what that looks like but I’m not sure why camellias would do that, sorry. Repotting can definitely help they’re root bound. When you water, if the water drains pretty fast, it’s usually because the plant is root bound. Best thing is to take it out of the pot and examine. I really hope your camellias survive and thrive for you. I love mine so much. They bring me tremendous amount of joy every winter. Best of luck!

@@Linasgardens quick question if you don't mind. I have two of these anchor in the corner of my house, in the front, which faces North. They've done very well, they're about seven feet tall now. They get mostly shade. I hired a landscape person to help me with my backyard, she's recommending three of these against a fence for privacy.. they will get filtered morning and afternoon sun. Do you think that's an issue?
Hi! Sorry I just saw this. I think they should be fine with filtered afternoon sun. It’s the strong direct scorching sun all afternoon that can be a problem. When you say against a fence, do you mean as shrubs or as espalier? I’ve heard and read that camellias can be trained into espaliers too. I’m thinking of putting one of mine in the ground, front of house also facing north like yours. I hope it’ll do well there.
@@Linasgardens I have an existing salt treated picket fence. This fence is between my yard and a city sidewalk. The vision, the plan, is to plant a tall shrub against the fence for privacy.
I have two existing Camillas that anchor the foundation corners on the front of my brick Cape house that faces North. The ones to be installed by the fence would face East.
Wish I could grow these in zone 8b…Texas…Deer and not having the soil composition these plants require to thrive :( Pots… Summer time is too warm…requiring a lot of watering… You have beautiful, healthy plants!
Thank you! Yeah I totally understand your situation. My husband’s family live in Southern California where summer is very hot and dry. They have to be mindful of what they choose to grow too. I’m taking full advantage of this temperate area of West Washington right now when it comes to gardening.
You mean you’re looking to ship small trees to Vietnam? Or bring them back with you perhaps? I’m sorry I haven’t done anything like that before nor do I have enough information to comment. But I’m guessing every country has its own regulations. I would try to contact Vietnamese authorities directly regarding this matter.
