She (*Guenevere) stumbles into Arthur, who initially calls himself "Wart" (his childhood nickname), and then, hearing of her reluctance to marry, tells her of the joys of life in Camelot ("Camelot"). It is love at first sight, and they almost kiss but are interrupted when Arthur's attendants come upon the two of them. He is revealed as the King. He tells Guenevere the story of how he pulled the sword from the stone and became king, and she finally agrees to marry him.
(Wikipedia)
------------------------------------
King Arthur - Richard Burton
Queen Guenevere - Julie Andrews
This is a mix of:
- Private Recording from 1961, supposedly Burtons last evening;
- some of the only taping of Camelot on The Ed Sullivan Show (DVD's);
- my copy of "Camelot" (Hardcover) and
- images of the play floating around.

Well, let me say this: Larry Olivier, the greatest actor of his day, could never have pulled this off quite like Burton did in this magnificent performance. Bravo. We are still blessed to have Dame Julie Andrews with us. And let me give a shout out to Robert Goulet, who brought his own magnificent talents to the role and made it his own.

I want to hear her say/sing the line about "where rules a more resplendent king than here in Camelot". At least we can remember to always enjoy ^___^ whatever little bits, tidbits and snippets we *do* have. OMG! I'm in tears!!!! This is breathtaking! Julie's voice delivering the dialogue, and her inflections.. so fresh and precise. Then, the depth in Burton's voice while describing Camelot and how Arthur became a King... and finally, Dame Julie Andrews in all of her glory with that GORGEOUS voice of her... each word sounds like crystal gems. This is a wonderful treasure. Who doesn't want a time machine! And oh gosh...the audience was having a blast! For Warts's sake! :-)

When he went into the forest, he was afraid of being married. When she went into the forest, she was afraid of being married off to some total stranger and being told what to do all the time. They meet, they fall in love, they leave the forest as best friends. 😍 Forests are very good at accomplishing that sort of thing. Thank you so much for posting this wonderful gem. This is amazing, an absolute delight. Richard Burton and Julie Andrews are prodigious soaring talents and are perfect together in this. I think Alan Learner wrote the parts of Arthur and Guenevere for them and it shows. This is orders of magnitude better than the corresponding scene in the movie or in any of the stage adaptions I have seen. Tremendous old school charm, dignity, warmth, innocence and wit, and of course that sparkling dialogue, elocution and timing. Magnificent.

To me, the greatest blemish on the original cast album of "Camelot" is that Goddard Lieberson, in his perpetual zeal to make the songs "musically pure" totally eliminated Julie's small but vital contributions in the title song so that when the "And I suppose the autumn leaves fall in neat little piles?" exchange occurs all we get is the music. Thank goodness the Sullivan appearance preserved it properly (though as your edit shows and which I've had to do as well on my own copy, they have never released the full crystal clear video that exists of the entire scene, necessitating the stitch job to get the best possible version).

A diamond of a post. Thank you so much! I've recently read a book on the shows of Lerner and Loewe and learned that one hallmark of Moss Hart's direction was that the dialogue was delivered in a very 'crisp', almost staccato manner and quite rapidly (it's one way in which the film of 'Fair Lady' was different from the original production), and you can hear that here. Quite fascinating.

I like it better when it's just the two of them alone together. When the group of people come in, I can't help feeling like it's the local third grade play from the 1960's because the costumes just look much more obviously stylized and simplified when they're in a group like that. I know that a lot of people back then used to do fantasy plays that way, so I understand. It's the style, or was then. I just like it better when its just the two of them. Then again I would tend to like that part best for other reasons anyway. 😍 So then that works out well enough. 😉

I first heard the music on an LP when I was a child of, say, 10, and the right age to learn all the songs words and music, but too young to find Richard Burton irresistible. But Julie Andrews was my ideal and the right person to imitate shamelessly! I loved to sing her songs.

Similar experience! When I first watched The Sound of Music I was just a little girl, 8 or 9 years old. I was too young to find Christopher Plummer irresistible (even children couldn't give me more impression except their march scene😂), but Julie Andrews was just full of natural charm to me and I just couldn't refuse her…… Then she became the first actress I have ever searched online🤣…… Now as an adult, I can watch The Sound of Music more "objectively", and find though Christopher's singing voice was dubbed by Bill Lee, he was so handsome and acted very well👍; 7 children played very important roles in that movie and their acting and singing voice were very touching💝…… But I must admit Julie Andrews was the only reason I fell in love with that movie when I was a child… Or I had NO opportunity to watch The Sound of Music in the second time.

You do realize that it is a private recording of the actual play? So there is nothing canned to be heard. But sometimes the words are hard to understand, which is why I added the script from the book. (And sometimes actors don’t say exactly the same lines as they should, so it differs slightly.)

I have seen snippets of this this but this is the full version of the song where both burton and andrew do Camelot the song. What a find. Belongs in the smithsonian - a total masterpiece. I always thought it was a crime that julie Andrews never played My Fair Lady in the cinema version. [even though i love audrey hepburn] but now I feel what a terrible shame that burton and andrewns never made a cinematic version of this. Big fan of Richard harris but burton was the master and noone could ever match andrews beautiful voice. Maybe they can do an animated version with the original voices,
@epaddon
@epaddon Год назад
Unlike the situation in MFL, Jack Warner did want to reunite Burton and Julie for "Camelot" but Burton turned the film down (too besotted with doing movies with La Liz at the time and the money wasn't enough to make him budge) and when that happened, Julie wasn't going to do it because she didn't like working with Harris on "Hawaii" and wasn't going to do it again.
@CatherineZhang-kq2cm
@CatherineZhang-kq2cm Год назад
I don't think Julie Andrews didn't do the film version of Camelot because of that reason. Why did My Fair Lady receive so many disputes? The reason was that, though one of the leading roles in the original cast Rex Harrison had played this role in movie version, the real heart in the whole show--definitely was Julie Andrews--was excluded. Then let's see Camelot, though Julie Andrews was one of the leading roles, the real heart in Camelot definitely was Richard Burton. When Richard Burton refused this role, why wasn't Jack Warner worry about audience's responses? They would say, "Oh, now that the leading Lady can play her role, why our real hero can't?" We know that Richard's refusal had his own reason, but people would still sigh, especially when they saw some familiar faces in the original cast, the regret would be stronger… So in that time, definitely Jack Warner would think a total new cast is a better choice. He must have invited Julie Andrews to play her role (after all she is a popular star now), but must have expressed some hints that if she refused, they would thank her more. Julie Andrews couldn't disobey that company's meaning. Though she must have wanted this role very much as it was her another classic role on stage second only to Eliza in My Fair Lady, who she had missed, she was a NEW star and JUST an actress in essence, but what she faced was a BIG film company and if we said more precisely, an AUTHORITY.
