Recently bought an XA and binging videos while waiting for it to be delivered. This was such an informative video without feeling like too much of an info-dump or making my head spin. Just like your friend talking to you about a camera they like. Also I loved so many of your shots. Good work, I'll definitely watch more videos from you after this!

Oh wow. I had an XA long long time ago. But I still remember the feel of the plastic, was very specific in a way compared to other cameras at the time. You bring back memories :D thank you Belinda. Was interesting to see your tea glass being almost full, then half, then almost full again :D :D

Armin, haha you definitely have a sharp eye. Tbh im not sure how it compares to other compact cameras, as its market position is quite unique in the sense that there isn't quite a rival at its price range (today). But I'm glad it brought back fond memories - my pleasure always :)

@@BelindaJiao Well I had the mju II and loved the look and compact nature of it, but I could never trust the exposure to do what I wanted. So I sold it, and then I got a Ricoh GRIII but digital plus 28mm meant it always felt weird to me. This seems far more in line with what I was looking for! Thanks for this! Very informative!

Such lovely night shots! Haven’t really considered my XA for full-on night photography, but these came out great with Cinestill 800T🤩 That dodgy ferris wheel would be too much for me btw. Absolutely terrifying😱

Ron, with the XA prepare to be surprised! Haha. The flash was surprisingly helpful at night - it massively expands the range of things you can do. That wheel was a make-shift I think - lucky to be able to get down in one piece and tell you about it lol

I have a nice collection of analogue cameras and a good digital camera too. If I had to give away all of them, keeping just one camera it would definetly be the Olympus XA!

I really love the breakdown of the flash vs effective distance. This might be a good video on its own since one of the primary limitations of film is low light. Using flash with film is not talked about much, a sort of er dark art. Sorry.

Great video! Can you help me a little with the aspect of shooting through glass/window with the flash. This sounds amazing! But I do not really know ho to do it right. I have a Olympus XA and a A16....what should I do to get that effect? Greetings from germany!

Like me Olympus XA too. I have the more powerful flash A16 instead of A11.

I have an Olympus mju II, but I think I'd rather have the XA, because you can manipulate its settings, which you can't really do with the mju. However, since I have a digital Olympus Tough TG camera (first the 4, now the 6), this is the one point and shoot I use. I've come to the conclusion, that it does not make sense to use a 35mm camera anymore, since digital cameras can do everything what a 35mm camera do (much) better - especially in the realm of point and shoot - and much, much cheaper. My mju II will be sold soon. However, I very rarely use a point and shoot nowadays. The time I invest in photography I rather shoot medium and large format film cameras. The TG-6 is always in my trouser pocket, though, for documentation purposes.

I dunno if its just me but i always feel like it always takes the photo super fast and I'm just like, "Wait did I actually take it?" The super sensitive shutter doesn't help either lol. Ty for the great info!

HAHA it seems your not the type that is immune to new gear, but I will gladly apologise :D tbh, there are many cameras that can do similar things as the XA so just stick to whatever compact camera you have!

hey Potato! Yes it is unfortunately, depending on how you see it. For instance, you will not spend nearly as much storing files on hard drives or buying multiple lenses etc. Enjoy! shoot more it that makes you happy

I have been taking pictures for 30 years, since I was a teenager. And since 20 years I develop my films and I print with an enlarger. Yes, film photography has become ridiculously expensive! But there is still an alternative to photograph at a decent price, and that is to use Foma films. Disliked by some, they are not bad at all when you know how to use them. 40€ for 30,5m of Fomapan 100 iso, adding a little bit of shipping costs it's about 2,3€ for a 36p film. The Foma film support is a bit more fragile (careful 20-22°c when you wash the film, not more... and less acetic acid in stop bath), they don't do their sensitivity, especially the 400 and 200, which are better exposed at 250 and 100 iso respectively. The 100 iso on the other hand I expose it at 100, overdeveloping slightly. Of course it has more grain than FP4+, but a nice grain and a nice rendering. As for the Foma fiber paper, it is still not too expensive compared to Ilford, and is a good quality paper... You can print in 13x18 without breaking the bank! I hope that it will always be the case because these last days prices have slightly increased... Probably because of the general inflation due to the not very reassuring world situation... 🙄
