How would you characterise a dolly in/out style vs a zoom in/out? Clearly the latter is easier to access, requiring just a zoom lens, whereas the dolly shot(s) require a slider/dolly. Which technique best suits what situations? Then you have both zoom plus dolly combined, but opposing to retain key character size in frame as per well known 'Jaws' example. A similar question pertains to tilt shots (via just a fluid tilt head) vs a crane shot (achieved by a more hardware intensive vertical slider, crane, gimbal or drone mounted camera. Which would be best for and why?

Hi Ricky Thank you for your comment. Well, for dolly in and out vs zoom in and out, there's no right or wrong way since both techniques bring the subject closer. It really depends on what you want as a Filmmaker. But I would prefer a dolly in and out to a Zoom in and out for specific scenes where I want to bring the audience closer to the character and their world to experience their emotional spectrum as though the audience part of the scene or father from the character to achieve the opposite. Dolly in and out achieves this purpose better for me. Zoom in brings the subject close anyway, but it's like focusing on a specific detail from afar. It really depends on what exactly you want your audience to feel. Watch our episode on camera movement to learn more about Dolly in and Dolly out Link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iavlG1kThSM.html ZOOM AND DOLLY COMBINED Combining zoom and dolly gives you what is called the Hitchcock effect. It's a technique that involves simultaneously moving the camera physically backward or forward while adjusting the zoom lens to the opposite direction. It creates a distorted perspective where the subject appears stationary while the background either expands or contracts. We're creating a special episode on this. Stay connected on our channel and turn on the notification bell to get notified when it drops TILT SHOT USING FLUID HEAD TRIPOD OR CRANE Well, for indie filmmakers who can't afford the crane, a fluid head tripod is cost effective and will still achieve great results. Of course the crane will do much better than a fluid head tripod in some occasions not all. Because there times when you only want a gentle, small tilt to a characters face or specific detail. A crane will be an overkill for that, you need a tripod for that not a crane. Watch our episode on camera movement to see more about tilts. Link:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iavlG1kThSM.html Thank you Also, remember to subscribe to Breadfruit Studios if you haven't already and hit The notification bell to be notified when we upload more episodes.
