The majority of the comments here are about the joy and energy of the performers. Okay fine but also THEY ARE PLAYING FROM MEMORY. Not *super* hard for the first violins bc they have the melody more than anyone else, but the harmony and counterpoint lines are SOOOOO hard to memorize. I'm a professional violist and no way could I memorize this whole suite. These musicians are unbelievable.

Don't you also have the feeling that the beginning is being interpreted too militarily?

As a professional cellist, the reason you can’t memorize it is cause you’re a violist 😂 jkjk

These offerings via RU-vid are one of the main reasons why I am grateful to the Lord for having me live enough years (81) to be around in an era when humans anywhere can reach out to the best musicians, conductors, composers, orchestras, enjoy their art !!! -- all the while having a cup of coffee in your own home. Miraculous.... What a musical travel odyssey: from my first concert at Havana's Auditorium in 1954 (Erich Kleiber, Dvorak's New World and Tschaicovsky's Pathétique) to Baden Baden's Festspielhaus (Zubin Mehta and the Wiener), to being familiar with Abbado, Furtwangler, Gergiev, Von Karajan, to know the Concertgebouw, the Berliner, the Met, el Liceu, as familiarly as the Arsh here in Miami, and, most of all, to be virtually almost on a first name basis with Daniel Barenboim and Martha Argerich....... well, that's too much, that's "demasié" Can't contain my joy, period REPLY

Indeed! It is a blessing to enjoy from the best, here from my phone, and my earbud that want to explode, because I want to transmute my whole being into music. And also have the privilege to subscribe to wonderful performers' and outstanding composers' RU-vid channels, and my humble comments get a reply from them......??? Truly is a privilege to live this. Thank you Sir, for your kind and wise words. May God give you many more years in this journey.

@Hugh Jones Dieterich Buxtehude, born 1637 in Helsingborg (now Sweden, then Kingdom of Denmark) was an accomplished organist and composer. Franz Berwald, born 1796 in Stockholm, wrote four symphonies and some operas. Edvard Grieg, born 1843 in Bergen, was for all but the last two years of his life a citizen of the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway; he was also half-Scottish. Norwegians have hidden depths and many talents for a small population.

I discovered this Holberg Suite on the aircraft's classical channel while flying over the Aleutian Islands in the summer of 1997. I was returning to Fort Belvoir Virginia the US following military duty at Zama Japan at that time. This piece - flying over the Aleutians - a rebirth. At 40,000 feet, looking down over the Aleutians, can you imagine the euphoria of that moment in time? I am still in that aircraft, with this music, with that breathtaking woman on the bass cello.

In a world of DVDs and amazing recordings, how inspirational to see this group revelling in this wonderful music. And the Holberg Suite both in the piano version and the string version is great music. Anyone who knows only Peer Gynt and the piano concerto should listen to this - and then on to the lyric pieces, sonatas etc - well, sadly Grieg still doesn't have the recognition that he deserves. This is real music making. They are totally attuned to each other. If this was some theatrical bs you would see it hear it, and above all, feel it. One thing I appreciate is that the group is comprised of musicians of different ages and physical types. One might think this doesn't mean much, but too many ensembles go for a "sexy", "cute" and largely young look these days as though they feel they can't hold the attention of an audience without being "cool" and "hip". This is great ensemble!

"This performance is breathtaking and sensitive, charming and exciting." Breathtaking and exciting...perhaps. However, these musicians brutalize their string instruments way too much in the fast movements. A sensitive and charming performance does not include the sound of strings hammered against the fingerboard and grating noises. That's OK in Piazzolla or - to an extent - in Shostakovich, but not in Grieg. Their tempi also run away with them way too often. It's an over-the-top performance which has its nice and exciting moments, but overall, the playing is too undisciplined and crass.

Technically this isn't classical music... it's orchestral, but it's not in the classical style. I don't like actual classical music because it tends to be really formulaic, meanwhile Grieg has a lot of emotion, and this song was more of a love note to the baroque era.
@michaelreflexivo8989
@michaelreflexivo8989 7 лет назад
I indicate classical music as renaissance music, baroque, rorocó, classical, romantic, postromantic, impressionist, etc. The music we hear in theaters and on the records, played by orchestras, chamber ensembles, etc. Could it be called cultured, academic music? Music that is not usually called "popular." Classics were Mozart and Haydn, for example. But I also like Peri, Caccini, Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Albinoni, Corelli, Weiss, Händel, Bach, Wagenseil, L. Hofmann, D. Scarlatti, Spohr, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Verdi, Puccini, Borodin, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Shostakovich, Respighi, Ravel , Debussy, etc. etc. etc. Suite Holberg was one of the works I first heard. Together with Vivaldi and Mozart, she took me to everything else. You understand?. Thanks and regards.,

This is chamber music on a grand scale. There is so much to love in this exciting video: the organic, satisfying tempi; the audacity of their dynamic range; the faces of the players so eloquently reflecting the emotion of the musical phrases; the descent to a true "niente" at 5:30-:33; the little musical "conversations" - among the Violin 2s, between celli and violas in Mvt. 1, among the soli quartet and the flirtation between cello 1 & 2 in Mvt. 3; and last but not least, the physical attractiveness of all these individuals. Bravi tutti.

My love of Grieg grows whenever I hear his music. These musicians would make him proud! Picturing Grieg smiling from Heaven on this performance. God bless you all.

A fabulous rendition of a wonderful composition. It is a joy to watch the musicians at work & seemingly enjoying themselves. Top marks - quite delightful.

Quel bonheur ! Cette oeuvre emballante est menée tambour battant par cet ensemble remarquable et les violoncellistes y mettent tout leur coeur. Bravissimo ! What happiness! This exciting work is carried out with beating pace by this remarkable ensemble and the cellists put their hearts into it. Bravissimo!

I just love this Camerata Nordica String Orchestra version of Grieg's "Holberg Suite": It BANGS. Especially, that blonde cellist in the middle: what an expressive face! OXOXOXO1 D. C. Weiser

I have played fiddle in semi pro symphony orchestras for 40 years. Performing from a standing position is so liberating, I don’t know why there aren’t more such concerts!
