Enjoy our live Monday Night Travel party with this video recorded on November 20, 2023.
Cameron Hewitt, guidebook author and frequent MNT guest, spent over 100 days in Europe in 2023. Now he's back home and excited to share a full report on his travels: updating guidebooks in Ireland, Norway, Poland, and Hungary, plus filming new TV shows with Rick in Iceland and Poland. He shares lots of vivid photos and travel tales, as well as practical insights on traveling in our fast-changing times. He discusses the (sometimes surprising) impacts of the pandemic, wars, inflation, technology, cruise ships, and other factors on today's travelers. And he shares the joy of celebrating Easter in Poland and Bloomsday in Dublin, going on a road trip with his favorite travel partner in Norway, and bumping into fellow MNT travelers everywhere he goes. #ricksteves #mondaynighttravel #europetravel

I love hearing your travel stories, and as a fellow introverted traveler, your recommendations really resonate with me. Now to convince my husband to go to Poland!

Thank you, Cameron, so helpful to our planning for 2024. A tremendous woman to know is Jo van Gogh. Please read Jo van Gogh, The Woman Who Made Vincent Famous. One of the best biographies I have ever read. We have van Goghs in museums around the world because she believed Vincent’s work needed to be seen and be accessible. There are authentic voices of the artist and his contemporary art dealer brother. Jo assembled their legacies and changed the way the public engaged the artist in their work. ❤

I lived in Sweden for 18 years and speak Swedish fluently and understand Norwegian. Norway and Sweden are probably the most racist countries in the world. I’m so glad I moved the US where my life flourished in every way. Also, people in Norway and Sweden hate the high taxes. Just wanted to stomp out some misinformation in this video. 😀

Well that was condescending and uninformed on the political discussion. 😊

Ireland is not in the ‘British Isles’. It is extremely offensive to Irish people to refer to Ireland as being in the British Isles. It would be like referring to Poland as Greater Germany.

Viktor Orban with his faults is a very strong leader for Hungary and heavily supported by its people. To me his highlight is preventing mass migration into Hungary. The rest of Europe would do well to follow suit though the EU who is financing the operation through cash cards for immigrants may not like that much.

With global warming, more huge migrations of dis- placed people will happen

I just found this channel and it looked interesting because I had been to these places …then instead of travel, I get an opening segment on politics. But if you are going to talk politics, at least get it right. The “don’t say gay tag line” was just that, a tag line to make the news. The bill/law (or whatever) said: “No federal tax dollars should go to any federal, state, or local government agencies, or private organizations that intentionally expose children under 10 years of age to sexually explicit material.” Keep sex (any preference of sex) out of elementary schools-many are just learning to tie their shoes and can barely read these days. Needless to say, I’ve tuned out of this channel-my time is limited and I want to spend it researching travel … not politics.

I am from Ireland and the cost of hotels has inflated significantly since COVID-19. Dublin has been commodified to be a gentrified playground for the rich, many of the old buildings that have been charmed were knocked down for the same bland post-modern buildings. Also, the reason you have to book ahead in Ireland is that 25% of the rooms are occupied by Ukrainians

I live in Dublin. I have done for a long time. None of the above is true. Prices have gone up due to inflation - as have hotel prices across Europe - and due to supply and demand. It has nothing to do with Ukrainians.

@@conorfurlong I work in the hospitality industry. I am talking about a fact Ukrainian are being housed in hotels. Which influences the amount of hotel rooms. The percentage is 25%
@conorfurlong
@conorfurlong 9 месяцев назад
@@laurawhelan5153 That’s not correct. In Dublin, 14% of hotel rooms are being utilised to house all refugees and asylum seekers.

@@conorfurlong I said Ireland More to the country than the capital kid. PS: this is not a slander towards any immigration group but shows the reason for more limited supply and increased demand. Hence a price increase. Inflation obviously doesn't help this. I literally know Irish people who go to the uk for the same concert to avoid accommodation costs in Dublin

Oh Cameron, I enjoy your travel insights so much, but you couldn't be more wrong politcally--it's a shame.

It is too bad on such a very nice presentation of Hungary, Cameron's strong progressive political stance doesn't recognize the major contribution President Reagan and President George H Bush had on the freedom, of what he and Rick now think is Central Europe. Until you speak to people who lived under communist rule, which I have done, you will never understand the appreciation of how these Eastern European people appreciate the contributions of the US on their lives. Travel should NEVER be a political act. That is a self-serving, politically biased position. Unless you are a native of the country, your opinion should be kept to yourself. Stick to travel and your experiences of travel. Leave politics at home and enjoy the history of the culture of the country you are visiting.

Im disappointed that we can't have a travel discussion without getting political and pushing a personal belief or agenda. I'm sure people of all positions travel with Rick Steves tours. We love Europe and want to talk and listen about travel to and from but stop with the personal political views. We may rethink our future travel plans with Rick Steves tours if this continues.
