Cameron Johnson will be a Toronto Raptor [OPINION]

The Toronto Raptors have a very clear trade target. Their roster doesn't make sense as constructed, the Nets are clearly tanking after trading Mikal Bridges, they got a ton of picks from New York, and getting some flexibility and shiftable assets back for Cameron Johnson could have come down to a bidding war. Thankfully, it doesn't need to come down to a bidding war because the Nets owe the Raptors a pretty huge favor, and I'm 75% sure that these talks are already well underway.

And yes, I can give you my sensibly well researched rationale to why I believe Cameron Johnson will be a Raptor before training camp provided the Nets and Raptors can come to some sort of agreement on fair compensation for him.

Insight is what sets Pensare Basketball apart from every other basketball RU-vidr, podcaster or media head out there. Thinking about things nobody else notices is hard. Not everyone can do it. Lots of very smart people can't do it. So let's all appreciate how unique and thought-provoking Rob's content is instead of distilling everything down to right/wrong.

If the Raptors can trade for Cam it would solve so many question marks surrounding the team. Cam is honestly a plug and play type of player. He would look really good on this team as a complimentary piece; strengthens: IQ, shooter and defender. Plus that Darko connection is real. Let’s not forget when Cam was on the Suns they made him untouchable in certain trade talks. The only way they traded a player like Cam was if they had an opportunity to trade for a player like KD. They did, and if the Suns could go back to the KD trade I believe the Suns would do anything in their power to keep Cam on their team. Would be a great get. 💯

I'm a Phoenix fan from way back and watched Cam a lot the years he was there. The player he reminds me most of in the NBA is actually Grady Dick. Great shooter moves well without the ball and surprises you with intangibles like the odd cool pass.

But he defends well doesn’t he? Unlike Gradey dick. I’ve never paid attention to him before so this is an actual question haha

It's a nice fit if trade happened and Johnson was fairly healthy. I agree Raptors will not actively tank to start the season. As you've stated multiple times now, you do your best to compete and give yourself a target date to see a competitive team. If they don't live up to that the Raptors can pivot and shut guys down, play the young guys more minutes etc. For now assume Raptors will be trying to win again, same as they did this year and the year before.

We do need another big and Cam Johnson would work. I just don't want to give away too many picks. If they did take Bruce Brown and maybe a couple of seconds that would be a good deal.

I like the Cameron Johnson fit a lot, but it really depends on what the team would need to give up to sweeten the pot along with Bruce Brown. How much would you be comfortable with, Rob? Also, these last two lives (both of which I have watched after the fact) demonstrate a really good understanding of how humans/groups of humans who are competing with each other work together over time. It seems to me like your understanding of that stuff has improved. I'm not saying this to imply that you did not understand it at all before (your comment regarding the "follow the money" lesson happening in your early twenties means as much), but it does feel like you've now got an enhanced understanding of the fact that sometimes the optimal move for the future of an organization is not scraping every last milligram of advantage from every single transaction. Also, in addition to your valid point about how trading VanVleet for a song might well hurt his market (something that Masai alluded to) and piss off Klutch I do think there were a couple of other reasons not to trade him to consider. 1) The team was genuinely considering bringing VanVleet back if the price was right. There's a reality where that team makes it through the play-in and it kind of revitalizes the desire to keep the team together. Personally, like you, I am happy that the team has moved on and I like how they're building now, but I can understand the desire to see how things work with Poeltl and how that improves the club and Fred's production. If they make a sneaky run to the Conference Finals (exceedingly unlikely, but not strictly impossible in a weak Eastern Conference) is there any doubt that they might well have felt compelled to bring Fred back? Getting healthy, a reasonable expectation that Scottie might well have an end of year breakthrough, the addition of a capable starting center and a bit of luck and that team had at least a puncher's chance of surprising. It's reasonable to disagree with that assessment of course, but I can understand the front office wanting to give it one more shot with that group. 2) If the entire league sees you selling VanVleet for fifty cents on the dollar just to get SOMETHING before you let him walk in the offseason then that signals to the league that you might be prepared to get lowballed on the other players who everyone publicly claims you "value too highly" (I am paraphrasing of course, but we heard a ton of that kind of language about OG and Pascal). If we say that the Raptors got "5" value for OG (not a grade out of ten or anything, just saying a number for comparison's sake), but would have only been able to extract a "3" for him if they had traded VanVleet for a "1" return (a random second in some distant draft plus some salary filler of let's say utterly neutral value relative to its price) then the team came out ahead by not making that kind of move. Sending the message that you will not fold out of fear of watching a player walk and if a team wants your guy then they are going to have to come correct counts for something. So whether you saw him staying or going there were good arguments for not trading Fred away on a discount. If the alternative is trading Fred for some meagre future value, pissing off everyone in the process and letting the league know you can be easily had in a trade then you'd better be pretty freaking confident that your odds at landing Wembanyama are going to get a huge bump. Given where the team was in the standings and the flattened lottery odds that's not a bet that I would have felt great about taking. Please correct me if you addressed point two in the OG trade lives as it's been long enough that I honestly don't remember right now.

Hey, thanks for this. 0. I agree. I have deepened my understanding of how human beings operate. I'm not big on feelings and such so it's a bit hard for me to fully understand why one "can't ask an NBA champion to tank" but I get it more now. 1. I think they fully expected to make the playoffs and not lose to the Bulls. But let's also remember the Bulls lost to the Heat. Right? 1.1 - has there perhaps been a slight devaluing of draft picks because they're not human? Something mentioned in Eric Koreens last article was that the Raptors seem more emotionally detached with picks than players, possibly because they get a bit too close to their players. 1.2 so it does stand to reason they'd have felt the possibility of helping Fred, Pascal, Jakob.. (long term attachment) was worth more than a hypothetical first round pick and Scottie's happiness or well being or development. As someone who lacked that attachment to Pascal, Fred, Nurse or Jak, and was much much more emotionally invested in Wemby and Scottie, my takes were at the time ALSO a reflection of bias. I was just biased towards the opposite thing and happened to be right. 2. I don't think that would have been the case honestly. Devil's advocate; to err is human, to err is endearing. Losing a trade or 2 doesn't necessarily mean you lose trades by more in the future. In fact, if everyone who deals with you tends to win the trade, people may feel more** open to dealing with you. The exact opposite happens when you always win trades. People may be more reluctant to deal with you given they're more likely to come out losing in the long term. The Raptors rep for driving hard bargains and winning traded longterm has probably hurt them more than it's helped them in terms of getting teams to the table. Also to your first question: I'm perfectly comfortable moving the Indiana pick with Brown if it means Cam + DayRon. Sharpe is extension eligible this summer and they may just wish to move off of him for a pick instead of having to pay him north of 12-14 million after they just paid Clax.

No. I think he would likely help provide a lot of guidance and spacing for them. It's unlikely he plays much more than Brown would have anyway. He does make Bouchers path to minutes nearly impossible though.

one issue with the incentive for the Nets to be bad next season- while they do have 3 firsts (OKC, Houston, Phoenix), Houston owns swap rights to their 2025 pick if they suck. edit: I stand corrected, they traded to negate the Houston swap

@19:03 "You gave them a starting PG to help them tank in Dennis Schroder" The Nets were not looking to tank as the Houston Rockets own their FRP, that deal wasn't a "favor" it was mutually beneficial for both teams because the Raports were looking to tank to try and save their protected pick, they also got an expiring to help pay Immanuel Quickley! Im a Nets fan and I just don't see The Nets trading Cam Johnson JUST to trade him, it will have to be for a positive return and as you said many times Bruce Brown is not worth his contract. I also don't see why Cam Johnson would want to leave for Tornoto
@pensarebasketball
@pensarebasketball 5 дней назад
We ate salary on a player we didn't play/use. That's a favor as far as I'm concerned. Dennis wasn't a negative asset. You're right he wasn't brought into tank but I largely assumed the Nets season was over by the time they made that trade. 2. Cam Johnson is injury prone and good at basketball and in his prime. He also has 3 years. If your goal is to tank, you would absolutely hate to have him on your roster. He doesn't fit the timeline, he's an expense, and if he's healthy he deters the tank because he can be really good. It's also the injury issue. Injury prone players offer less flexibility. If he gets injured 7 weeks before trade deadline, there's your flexibility. If he plays 70 games, there goes your tank. This isn't a franchise legend where you keep him and ask him to sit out ala David Robinson. The nets bought back their picks for a reason. And that reason is Cooper, Ace, Dylan. Unless you tell me you're building around Claxton, Johnson and Thomas.
@marlinesutherland5358
@marlinesutherland5358 5 дней назад
@@pensarebasketball When they got Dennis Schroeder they were still fighting for that last play-in spot with the Hawks. Cam Johnson won't hinder the tank, we lost 50 games with him, and he being injury-prone will help with the tank. As you said numerous times throughout the stream you can't have a bunch of kids on your roster even in a rebuild, you need Vets & that can be his role. Also, his contract isn't an issue when you factor in Ben's Max contract coming off the books next season, The Nets are projected to have over $60 million in cap space next off-season and you have to pay someone. The only way I see Sean Marks trading Cam Johnson is if he asks for a trade and if he does, I don't see why he would leave one rebuilding team for another especially when he's linked to contenders (Cavs, 76ers, Kings, Lakers), and of course, if they get an offer they can't refuse, Bruce Brown & a Protected Pick wouldn't come close to the best offer if he's made available.
