Star Trek Trilogy (Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, The Voyage Home)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is a 1982 American science fiction film directed by Nicholas Meyer and based on the television series Star Trek. It is the second film in the Star Trek film series following Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), and is a sequel to the television episode "Space Seed" (1967). The plot features Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise facing off against the genetically engineered tyrant Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán). When Khan escapes from a 15-year exile to exact revenge on Kirk, the crew of the Enterprise must stop him from acquiring a powerful terraforming device named Genesis. The film is the beginning of a three-film story arc that continues with the film Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) and concludes with the film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986).
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is a 1984 American science fiction film, written and produced by Harve Bennett, directed by Leonard Nimoy, and based on the television series Star Trek. It is the third film in the Star Trek franchise and is the second part of a three-film story arc that begins with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) and concludes with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). After the death of Spock (Nimoy), the crew of the USS Enterprise return to Earth. When James T. Kirk (William Shatner) learns that Spock's spirit, or katra, is held in the mind of Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Kirk and company steal the decommissioned USS Enterprise to return Spock's body to his homeworld. The crew must also contend with hostile Klingons, led by Kruge (Christopher Lloyd), who are bent on stealing the secrets of the powerful terraforming device, Genesis.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is a 1986 American science fiction film, the fourth installment in the Star Trek film franchise based on the television series Star Trek. The second film directed by Leonard Nimoy, it completes the story arc begun in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), and continued in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). Intent on returning home to Earth to face trial for their actions in the previous film, the former crew of the USS Enterprise finds the planet in grave danger from an alien probe attempting to contact now-extinct humpback whales. The crew travel to Earth's past to find whales who can answer the probe's call.

The best part about that is it wasn't just acting. Shatner really did get choked up when he said the line. The entire cast in the scene was emotional over filming that part because they though at the time they really were saying goodbye to the character.

One of the really fascinating things that happened upon Nimoy's death were multiple bagpipe renditions of "Amazing Grace" played all over the world in his honor. If you search RU-vid, you'll find many. There's one with a full bagpipe orchestra played at a ComiCon coinciding with Nimoy's death that's really fantastic. There was a bagpipe "Amazing Grace" in the MMORPG _Star Trek Online_ . The devs erected a monument of Spock on Vulcan and played it there. For weeks following, player characters would be set to stand there at attention, watching vigil. The players would put them there 24x7, AFK for days. Indeed, I created a character myself, solely to do that. I put my character at attention and walked away for about a week. I've never logged-on since. I may do it again when Shatner dies. I wish he'd out-live me, but he's still 30 years my senior. Unless I develop a terminal health problem or die by misadventure, he'll pass before me.

The Siskel and Ebert review of Voyage Home is comical. They both liked it a lot and pointed out that only Trek could get away with an absolutely bonkers plot like this. They start in 23rd century on a spaceship and then they're San Francisco hunting for whales.

I LOVE that you identified that friendship is very important in these movies. As a teenager in the 1980's, when these movies were coming out, being a nerd or geek was NOT cool or accepted, as it is today. I was lucky to have a circle of friends who enjoyed all this stuff with me, but I always considered the crew of the Starship Enterprise to be friends, as well. I REALLY hooked into the theme of "risking all to save your friend", that was in STAR TREK III - probably why I love that film SO much. It was wonderful seeing your reaction to three movies that are so dear to my heart.

He and I share a birthday! Cool. Well, a few days later anyway. I'm sure you know this, but for anyone who doesn't, he was perhaps best known for Star Trek, but he was well known in the industry. He was a big player in western movies and TV shows. I believe each of the three main actors, Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley had about equal notoriety when starting Star Trek. Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan, George Takei, and Walter Koenig were known to a lesser degree.

Considering the differences between humans and Vulcans(the lack of a male sex drive, except once/7 years, at which point they can literally die without), consent might work slightly differently. Star Trek IV: $100 dollars in 1986 money is worth $286 today. The reason the cop stared at Chekhov asking about "nuclear wessels" is because of the Cold War. A Russian guy asking about anything nuclear at that time would have raised immediate suspicion that he was a spy for the Soviet Union.

Not to be a spoiler, but Star Trek 5 lost a lot of it's potential because of uhh, budget cuts, and losing the uhh...group that made special effects. Shatner's directing wasn't really that bad, and it could have been totally awesome instead of okay.
@brucechmiel7964
@brucechmiel7964 8 месяцев назад
@@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 Its not a spoiler, ILM effects house was busy with Indiana Jones and a couple of other projects to work on Star Trek 5. There is a logical reason for the budget. Each time a movie did poorly the budget got smaller, when a fim did good the budget got bigger relative to the previous one. But the biggest problem was the cast. Each sequel they made cost more to bring in everyone. That's why Star Trek VI was originally written as a prequel with a young main cast in their first adventure outside of Starfleet Academy with only Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelly returning for what can only be described as cameos. However, because the 25 anniversary was coming up it was decided to make a big final send off of the Original crew of the USS. Enterprise. Lenard Nimoy came up with the initial premise and with Lawrence Konner, and Mark Rosenthal, wrote the Story. Nicolas Meyer wrote the screenplay and directed the film (Harve Bennet was let go). Nimoy had to make a special provision in order to promote the film.

Despite what Angelo says in his comment, the real pronunciation of Takei is Tah-keh-ee. I am of Japanese descent and have actually met Mr. Takei. I also took German in high school. Walter Keonig pronounces his name Kay-nig. And it is Harve Bennett, not Harvey. It is pronounced Harv. As to your comment that Kirk could just show her around the ship (1:33:48), Kirk as well as the rest of the crew are bound by the Prime Directive. The Prime Directive is a guiding principle of Starfleet that prohibits its members from interfering with the natural development of civilizations. This includes introducing advanced technology and knowledge. Through "Star Trek IV", they violated the Prime Directive, with Scotty giving the formula for transparent aluminum, Chekov tossing the weapon at the Naval officer, and Bones giving the kidney healing medication to the woman waiting for dialysis. For Kirk to purposely show Gillian around the ship would be a violation of the highest order, which is why he was reluctant to do so and why had said that she tricked him.

One of the long-held explanations we Trekkers have had since the film came out was that N.C.C.-1701-A is the re-christened Yorktown after it and any remaining surviors of her crew were recovered after the probe left. Yortown was the ship attempting to use a makeshift solar sail to generate power. In real world history there is precedent for this. After the U.S.S. Squalus sunk, it was refloated, the bodies of the deceased were recovered, it was refit and renamed the Sailfish. After that, sailors nicknamed the vessel "Squailfish."

11:45 Mark! They wouldn't need to do another external visual inspection tour as it still looks the same! Only the interior has been modified. You're looking at more scenes reused from the first movie! Meyers's ideas of what looked "realistically futuristic" were to reuse actual computer and electronic gadgets, including one you should recognize by the "IBM" label! The first movie was more creative with a conceit to the then new fiber optics technology that most people had yet to see! 😮

lol, believe it or not, my favorite is the 1st one! 🙂 But I love 2, 3 and 4.....I think most fans would agree that 2-4 are the most beloved Star Trek movies that have ever been made, counting the Next Generation movies. I heard humpback whale songs live once, on the submarine USS Florida SSBN-728, while standing sonar watch! We have no windows, as there is nothing to see below 200 feet or so (sunlight does not penetrate beyond that depth) so sonar is very important. We tell what is going on around us by listening and using a LOT of math! And there we were, submerged hundreds of feet below the surface of the Pacific, and I heard humpback whales! It was haunting and profoundly beautiful! 🙂 "The Cetacean Institute" is being represented by The Monterey Bay Aquarium!! Which is about an hour south of the San Francisco Bay Area. It's one of those required field trips for a kid growing up in the Bay Area. It used to be one of the five largest aquariums in the world -- although now the largest one in the USA is in Atlanta -- and at one point they had a great white shark in the Monterey Bay Aquarium! They never had humpback whales, though. 🙂

"I have had enough of you", as he's kicking the klingon. If you ever watch "south park: bigger, longer, uncut", there is a reference to that. Also, spock probably wouldn't remember anything that he did after the transfer to mccoy. Thus, asking about saving the ship. As for those phrases (the needs of the many, and being friends), that he and kirk exhanged right before he died, he wouldn't remember that exactly. But they had exchanged such phrases previously.

14:02 Mark! The first erroneous usage of "elevator"! Meyers didn't know what "Turbolift" meant, so he preferred the more mundane "elevator" term! But you see, elevators only travel vertically up and down. Turbolifts travel vertically, too, but also diagonally and horizontally! 🧐 🖖
