The most beautiful symphony by Camille Saint-Saëns dedicated to his friend Franz Liszt. Great work with a use of the organ and the piano. Beautiful concert.
Hauntingly mysterious, darkly beautiful this requiem is something to think on and listen to again and again. Camille Saint Saens was a composer for all seasons-which age he belongs to remains a mystery for me, thank goodness. A wonderful performance by all here. The Symphony. like all Saint Saens' compositions is intriguing. It balanced the powerful Requiem beautifully here, and was somewhat of a relief. Thanks for this concert.

I am sure you will appreciate as well the Requiem by Louis-Théodore Gouvy, strangely unrecognised french-german composer ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qXytK7oSDvc.html
The way how this requiem ends is utterly beautiful. This is the darkest Agnus Dei I have ever heard, and it has totally blown me away. There is so much humanity in the very choice to end the work in the way. Thanks for letting me encounter this great, great work. I've never known that Saint-Saëns' music has this much depth.
Hehe I was there, great concert. Been a huge fan of Saint-Saëns' Requiem for a while, and been waiting for its revival since then. Hope this recording will make it more famous and that it'll finally get the recognition it deserves.
Like others, this is the first time I have heard the Requiem. Very pleased to become acquainted with it here. Always enjoy the Third Symphony. The first time I heard it live, many years ago with what was then the Denver Symphony Orchestra, the organ blasts rolled off the stage. The live attendees at this performance will have to let those of us on-line know their reactions. Thanks for sharing this concert with the rest of us unable to attend in person. Cheers from metro-Washington,DC!
There were a lot of folks around the world experimenting with instruments, sounds and music in the1800s and those were good when they couldn't be busy with anything else!!
Requiem 1:41 Requiem - Kyrie 8:09 Dies Irae 09:07 Tuba mirum 12:12 Quid sum miser 15:01 Rex Tremendae 18:11 Confutatis 18:54 Oro Supplex 23:49 Hostias (Offertory) 26:16 Sanctus 27:45 Benedictus 29:47 Agnus Dei
All that PLUS.. engaging and creative camera work that enhanced the drama of the music !!!!! Would that the silence at the end of the requiem had lasted 30 seconds longer.
Très sombre et magnifique , merci Arte une interprétation magistrale; Very dark dramatic Requiem maybe in C sharp ? this score could be writen by Darth Vador himself ( just joking) dedicated to Franz Litz and this masterpiece reminds us to deal in piece with death and its beauty
What an excellent concert, showing two sides of the composer - on one hand his progressive, Liszt-influenced final symphony and on the other, an extended sacred work that manages to be both attractive and conservative. (Those trombone-organ exchanges in the Dies Irae are beyond clever in their effectiveness and simplicity.) One tiny quibble: The clarity and balance of the sound engineering is impressive, but some moments here and there were a tad hard to hear.
These two seminal works by the French composer Saint-Saëns show his great artistry which was much-maligned in the years after his death in 1921. This unfortunately lead to his star of fame waining until he was considered a second-rate composer. There even was the saying that he was the greatest composer without talent. Nowadays this statement just seems dismissive of a great composer who departed this earth as a musical conservative and who left many enemies which paid him back by lessening the importance of his musical legacy. Fortunately this trend of dismissive musicology which in general uphelds the greatness of French impressionism and its two main proponents Debussy and Ravel and saw French Romanticism inferior to its German and Russian counterparts has now been almost corrected. The Saint-Saëns Renaissance which has been ongoing since the late 90s (propelled by new biographies of Saint-Saëns which shed a much needed light on this misunderstood and secretive composer) is on its way to restore Saint-Saëns rightful place as a first-rate French composer whose influence was tremendous in the course of French music. Although conservative in musical language Saint-Saëns managed to revitalize French music to such an extent that French instrumental music could finally stand up to German dominance over the instrumental forms. We hear in this superb video two of the composers greatest works both written in the late 19th century and which are instrumental in the development of French music. The third symphony rightfully takes the title as the greatest French symphony of the late 19th century and one of the few great French essays in this particular form. As far as organ symphonies go this is the single greatest organ symphony to have been written and when one speaks of an organ symphony this is the symphony which comes to mind immediately. The poco adagio is gorgeous and the finale invigorating. In my humble opinion this symphony is as great as anything Mahler or Bruckner have ever written in less than a third of the time. Now to the Requiem which is a far less known work. This Requiem has a very important place in the tradition of French Requiems. We know of the great Requiems written by the French which in order of date of composition would roughly be: Berlioz - Faure - Durufle. Now here is my proposition: Let us insert the Saint-Saëns Requiem right between the Berlioz and the Faure as it poses a crucial link between the two styles of Requiems composed in France. The first style and the older one is the style in which Berlioz wrote his Requiem - huge, soloists, many choirs and most important incredibly dramatic. A practice which was in part influenced by the prominence and domination of Opera over the whole of French music of the early to mid 19th century. With Saint-Saëns there comes a shift of approach to the form. The music gets more gentle and less operatic. The Requiem becomes an actual piece which time wise can be performed during mass and which is quite much influenced by Gregorian chant. In a way the Saint-Saëns Requiem is a hybrid of both styles. As we can see and hear the first 3 if not even four numbers are rather dramatic and also include the Dies Irae. With the Oro supplex and the following movements we come a big step closer to the sound world of Faures Requiem. Especially the Hostias as well as the Benedictus could be right out of the younger composers Requiem if not for the much more interesting orchestration Saint-Saëns employs. The Agnus Dei (one of the greatest ever written imo) again becomes more dramatic but inwardly so. I can imagine that Faure was influenced by this work quite a bit when he wrote his own Requiem as he was a lifelong friend and pupil to the older composer. (Also the Agnus Dei of the Saint-Saëns Mass Op. 4 is highly reminiscent of Faures Libera me) With this said i think the music speaks for itself and it really is a masterful work full of beauty and splendor. I hope this superb video manages to shine a spotlight on this great composition. Also thanks Arte such a great video with great camera settings. Great soloists and choir as well. Thank you conductor Măcelaru and Orchestra. A great tribute to a great composer in his 100th anniversary death year.
As a fan of the requiem for a while, I'm glad they resurrected it! Although, there are some movements, like Rex Tremendae that sound better in this version ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fDJhAtt7oBA.html. I'm still happy they recognized and played the piece. it's one of my favorites of all time.
A beautiful and passionate rendition. It is sad, however, to think about how many of these talented people will have been exposed to Covid during this performance. What is the real price of such beauty?
Can somebody more educated on the matter please tell me, am I wrong to wish for more of a tenebrae or voces8 sound of the soloists? Hearing the choir, orchestra and listenint to the harmonies and flow, i inagine the solos should be just an extension of the choir.. The vibrato and dense color of their voices makes sound, to me, almost vulgar. I mean no offense, I'm really eager to learn
So what are your mask rules? Half the people are not wearing any mask at all. Half of the people wearing masks have them under their noses and/or with huge gaps.
Those musicians playing brass instruments or reeds have to use their mouths to play and can't play through masks. Violinists and other stringed instruments are masked. However, you are right. Many of the musicians are not masked correctly and don't have their masks over their noises. Don't know who makes policy in this orchestra.
Try to think, you know it helps in daily life... Do you think a singer can properly sings wtih a mask, or a musician easily plays trumpet???????????????????
Because the masks weren't necessary. They don't protect you against the Chinabug. They may be of some use while traveling through airports during flue season.
