I wasn’t going to say this, because it is personal, but the Camino de Santiago has changed my life without me even going yet. While I was preparing, I decided to get a total health checkup with lots of appointments to lots of different specialists. We discovered a small growth that was just about to become life-threatening. So, St. James has become my patron Saint, because while I was getting ready to go on pilgrimage to his shrine, I caught cancer before it would have become disfiguring or life-threatening. I also hurt myself, so my trip was delayed, but that’s a different story. Haha.
Ooo Stephanie! Sorry to hear that… thanks for sharing with everybody your experience, it will might be inspiring for many and eye opening for others. How are you feeling now??
@@caminotellers I feel great. I’m a bit out of shape since I was down for so long, but catching a life-threatening illness just before it “hatches” is pretty miraculous. It’s been a beautiful thing to prepare for this journey. I’m happy to have been thorough in my preparations, and I am grateful to have you for my guide. I wouldn’t feel at all sure about going through with the Camino without you opening the Way for me and others like me. Perhaps you are also to thank for preserving my quality of life. Thank you, Ricky. 🙏🏻
@@stephaniejames6672My wife and I of 53 years are doing the Camino coastal Portuguese route on e bikes. My concession to having my stomach removed from cancer 3 years ago. I was 210 lbs and ended up at 135 lbs. I am now at 160 lbs.
Hello, I am planning to walk the Camino in October this year. In my research, I have seen a lot of information on various RU-vid channels. I have to say that I have found your channel the best for me. I like your knowledge and enthusiasm. Your presentation style is quirky but super informative. I am glad I came across you as I have learnt so much and enjoyed myself in the process.
Hi, I am from the U.S. and recently joined the group so thank you! I have been waiting until I could retire, so now, I am starting my first Camino on August 27th from SJPdP. I've given myself some extra days to keep going to Finisterre once I reach Santiago. I'm using the time I have over the summer here on the East coast to train in the heat and to pare down my backpack to the lightest weight possible. Hope to see you on the Way! Buen Camino
Husband doing his first Camino NOW at age 66. Train and be prepared, and it's a marvelous experience. Especially recommend the retreat offered by Camino Tellers, after viewing their videos and participating in their Zoom and Streaming sessions.
I drank water from those "safe" water taps on my first Camino and then for a few days I had to relieve myself like a dog on the streets. It's safer Estrella Galicia
Sawyer Filters! You can literally drink water with giardia and other bacteria and parasites and even though it will taste like s**t, it will be pure and safe.
Hello there from Ireland my camino has already started the training bit by bit no dates planned yet i want to be fit enough to enjoy the Camino and that bit further I love your videos you put out very i informative cheers 😊
Travel Like a Local With a Sim Card What is the ultimate way to be prepared for traveling abroad? Make sure you buy an international sim card! The last thing you want is to arrive at your destination with no service at all, no way to contact anyone, and no navigation. It could quickly turn into a nightmare. That is especially why it's so essential to make sure you have cell service and access to data beforehand! Now you can get around with no problem. Step off the airplane completely prepared and confident without worrying about finding an overpriced cellphone shop at the airport you're arriving in!
Will be walking the Mazarabe from Málaga in the second week of April and joining the Via de la Plata. How can one tell the difference between excitement and anxiety?
Wow, what a great plan! Keep us informed, we need our spy on Mozárabe this year ;) btw, excitement is what we all have before Camino, if you add some expectation to it, than it converts into anxiety 😥
Thanks so much for your informative video! I am so excited for my journey on the Camino! I pray I complete it. I’m starting in Sarria on April 29th and will be walking the Camino in 5 days with a small tour group. Do you advise a wintery jacket then?
Galicia is chilly and humid but not arctic cold. Think about 3 layers at most, tshirt, maybe a fleece and a foldable dawn jacket. You will get warm, when walking with backpack. A buff merino scarf is also a handy item ;)keep us informed how is your prep, hugs
Wow! That's great! Join the live stream on Thursday and meet the community. We'll be talking about preparations and answering any questions pilgrims might have- ru-vid.comz5mK5BgcOQk?feature=share
Brilliant! One of the very best Camino preparation videos I have yet encountered.- great editing, great presentation, and brilliant advice - I love the idea of writing to your future self. Having walked the Camino Frances with my wife 3 times, I can attest to the usefulness of your advice here. We are from Australia :-) Buen Camino!
What a great Joy to read your feedback! According to you, which would be the no1 albergue on the Camino Frances?? We are trying to make a list of places not to be missed
@@caminotellers best albergue on the Frances - for me that would be Casa Susi in Trabadelo - Fantastic hosts Susi and Fermin plus: best food, good sized bathroom, and no bunk beds!
The 'Napoleon Route' is open from the 1st of April, weather permitting. The route through Valcarlos is beautiful! How is the preparation? Are you already packed?
@@caminotellers we are pretty much packed we have 3 weeks in the UK and 12 days travelling through France to st jean pied de port. We only have our backpacks for 5 months away so all our pictures will have us wearing the same clothes. Wash and wear, wash and wear.
I'm from Canada and I'll be doing the Camino Portuguese coastal route and spiritual variant, beginning May 3rd or 4th. I've heard what you suggest, Ricky and Erica, about starting in the middle of the month and I wish I could. But these are the dates that work for me and I'm super thankful that I get to have this wonderful adventure. Only three months to go!
Good luck. I just really started looking into this and I’m trying to start it in the next few months. Will be my first time backpacking , in Europe , and will be doing it solo . Hopefully can make some friends along the way. I’m slightly nervous .
Anyone walked during November? Wanting to start in Sarria. Rain doesn’t bother me. Just curious if anyone has done it. Thank you in advance. Good luck to everyone!!
Thanks Matthew, Sardis in November is a misty landscape, like entire Galicia! That gives it its own charm. Days might be colder but the hot chocolate or soup will taste better ;)
Love it how you explained camino walk, me and aunt is 62syears old. I’ll take your guide. Do I need book guide?. Which one,and we’re to get it. Thank you so much.
Sorry for late reply, but we are in the middle of the Caminos, book is useful for extra info and keeping the map with you! There are also few apps that do similar job and weight nothing. We would take a guidebook for history or extra info!
Thank you for all the wonderful information, very pleased to have found your channel, ive been drawn to the Camino since losing my mother 3yrs ago,i am now in the lucky position to take the time needed to walk the full French way starting late August 2025,i am finding your videos very helpful in my early planning of my trip 🙏🙏
Thank you for connecting and sharing your moving life story! First of all big hugs for you. Having time, health and money to be able to walk Camino is a blessing! Let us know how is your preparation and Camino, let’s keep in touch!

Thank you for this! It was fun, informative & entertaining. My fave part was the shoe/ outfit change for diff months. (I also saw it as a "short"). Safe travels & buen camino!
@@caminotellers no, not this year. Not enough money & time. I do some hikes in my country, so I'm fairly confident abt fitness level. I also want to do Everest Base Camp in future, so it's a choice (budget) between camino or EBC. Cheers!
I come from Scotland and the North of Spain (and Portugal) had some of the cleanest rivers and streams I have ever seen. An abundance of fish in them as well.
There are lists of them on many pages, also there is an indication next to the main entrance… and the price is also a good indicator of which albergue is private or public or donation based.
In your opinion, would you take a sleeping back on the primitivo in late april? I only took a sleeping liner on the frances but it was in September. And I'm not an ultra light hiker but I do like to keep it as light as possible. I'm a fairly warm sleeper and I'm guessing that some of the alburgues will have blankets, even if for a small fee. Thanks for the videos and who knows, maybe I'll see you out there someday.
April in primitivo is…cold! Nice dawn/synthetic jacket is a good idea, a really good idea!!! And a nice hat too. Keep us informed about the trail as we will be there few weeks after you !
hello there, thanks very much for this very important tips,me n my wife are planning to do the camino,we would like to ask for us 1st timers, what route will you suggest for us to do,maybe the shortest, just to get the feel of experiencing camino, and later on we will do our wish list camino frances route, thanks very much.
Welcome in the family! Many people start with last 100km on few routes, which can be around 6 days… starting from Sarria, Ferrol, Tui or Vigo. If you have 2 weeks you can easily start from Porto and the route is easy and accessible to all. Which months are you planning to travel??
@@caminotellers most probably mid of next year,we will follow your tips, prepare physically and mentally,i am already 60 yrs old really wishing to do the camino before reaching 61,thanks very much and more power.
hi! once you get to SJPDP, go to the "pilgrims office" to collect your pilgrim's passport and the first stamp. It is normally open from 8am to 20pm. after that you can look for the albergue, they normally open around 13/14... there is no Decathlon in the city- the first one available in Pamplona. but there are other hiking shops around. Our Journal is available only in hard copy, as it is more effective for personal transformation. hope we could answer some of your doubts, :)
Hello and another great video. I don't know if you can answer this question: I have booked a one way flight from US to Madrid for April Camino. I have seen posts and comments about needing "proof of onward travel". I was planning on booking return flight after I had started my Camino. Any information on this?
I’ve been to Spain several times and while the Customs and Immigration Service may ask how long you plan to stay in the country, they will not ask for proof. It’s better to have your return ticket way ahead of time because it will likely be much cheaper.
@@caminotellers no way i just enquired if i could do this also. i would like to go to the primativo track from leon. if you guys need any help with translating feel free to reach out. and i definitely will
I’m planning to go on finish of August early September from porto or Lisbon. Your tips are very valuable to me What do you know about the Portuguese Camino please. Do you have a video about it please. I’m intending to do the caminho from 1988 when I read the Paulo Coelho book and now the opportunity just arrives Gratitude
I love your videos. Thank you for all the effort and time you put into it. St-Jacque chose me for May 2026: I’m from Cologne and will travel by bike from Lyon to Le Puy En Valley to the Pyrenees. May 2027: Pyrenees - Camino Frances - Santiago de Compostella - Cap Finistere.
Exceptional and comprehensive video. Bravi! You inspired me during my preparation and now while I'm en route. 23 May 2024 and i just crossed from Porto to A Guarda. Obrigada y gracias!
@caminotellers First, let me start by saying how much I appreciate your videos! They are informative, fun, & inspiring. Second, I'm planning on doing my first Camino starting mid-July of this year on the Frances route. Should I still plan on bringing a long sleeve shirt & a fleece for the evenings? Trying to save as much weight as possible and if I could drop those two it would save me about 435-450 grams.
Thanks a million for connecting! We always take two layers: the long-sleeve T-shirt, which helps us with sunburns, and the extra light, foldable down jacket, which can be a good idea for colder evenings, Galicia's humidity, and as a pillow if you need a quick rest. Many people use fleece jackets, but we prefer a lightweight, foldable jacket. What do you think?
Hey, I am doing the Camino de Santiago with my mom who is blind, do you have an accessible version like a digital version of your journal? I have purchased a physical copy and I can of course read it to her, but I would love to give her her a gift that she’s able to access herself digitally on her computer. Thanks for great content!
Hello Ricky and Erica, Thanks for your great work. I have a question: Is it possible to find work on the Way? Either for some time and for some form of salary or day by day work in exchange for food and shelter. I am aware there is the legality aspect that is of concern here but maybe there is some leniency for pilgrims? Thanks a million times and if the stars align for me I shall be on my way in September 2024 Stéphane
Stephane! Welcome to the tribe. There are many ways you can help as a volunteer, nearly every place need a volunteer! Free food and accommodation. Getting paid is more tricky, but one of our friends, Julian, he used to give massages to people and he had hands full of work!
mine starts in exactly one week :) I'll walk the Frances up to Leon and then I'll walk the Camino San Salvador from there to Oviedo and finish on the Primitivo. That is the plan
That’s a tricky one, as it will be rainy but also it could bring some snow. On the other hand side there is almost all of the walking on the pavements and made roads rather then hikes. Good trail runners with gore tex and a rain trousers so the water won’t just enter from above! But honestly, it’s a great time to walk!!!!
The remains of Saint James are buried by tradition in Santiago de Compostella and were not "discovered" there. The scollop shell is an ancient symbol of Christianity. While used on the Camino, it symbolizes the Christian pilgrim. It's not just as a pointer for Santiago, if it's even that.
Glad you enjoyed it! It is challenging not to make a guide too long, too boring and too “you should do this!” Having it in consideration we hopefully made this one differently 🤗
This was both fun to watch 😅and gave me things to think about, develop with. 🤔 One of the best Camino guides I've seen. No more else needed, really nice editing too. Keep up the good work. Ultreia. 🙏🙌👍🏻🚶🏼♂️🚶🏼
there are plenty of toilets on the way! plenty bars, restaurants and albergues. but remember, always ask first as we saw this year pilgrims just walking to the bars to use the toilets " without even say hello" and the bar owners were shocked!
How busy is the Camino at this time? I would like to walk next year from mid July to mid August but I’ve heard it might be difficult to find places to sleep. Hope u have a great Camino!
Not this year - probably 2026 we think. Coming from Australia so lots of things to factor in! It's a lot of fun thinking about it and planning it out though
Another wonderful video from you guys! Lots of real important information. Thank you! This is a kind of video that must be seen more than once. I am thinking about hiking sandals for the rainy days. So my shoes can be safely dry on my backpack or around my neck if I get caught by the rain on the middle of the walk. What do you think? I’ll start my journey on Camino Francés from SJPP next September 16Th and I may get to Santiago by the end of October. According to my plan it will take 38 walking days. A big or tricky question - Is this period of the year too rainy? Happy Days Luciano
Luciano! How are you?? We normally use a normal shoes, even for rainy days, and them dry them in albergue with a old newspaper 🗞️ and about the weather in September… let’s talk about it during Thursday Live stream!
I've just bought the journal. I'm going for my first Camino next month and thanks to you I feel very well prepared! :) Thank you so much for your content, buen Camino!
Great video! So happy that i found you. Thank you! I am planning to do Camino Primitivo in early July'24. Could be too hot? I am starting preparation today!
Heads up for the long weekend in Spain, many people will have holidays. If you can plan the trip in the way that you won’t arrive to Santiago NOT on Sunday, you will skip half of the crowds
I loved having my walking poles with me on the Camino Norte! It gives a good rhythm. It is good when they have a sling that is keeping it on your wrists. Also take some extra pole tipps with you. I could not find the right sort for my poles on the way, and the clicking on the street was not so nice. Buen Camino!!! See you in July on the Portuguese Cost way!!!❤
