There's a definite advantage in stealth camping - you sleep and the only thing you hear is the wind. In albergues, you pay money to hear others snoring!!

Hi Artem I watched the whole thing last night and realised that I should have said something to help your ratings a bit. In short .... excellent, thank you for posting it. I finished the French Le Puy side this year (up to SJPD) and am looking at Spain for next year assuming it is an option due to COVID. I’m cycling it though however I was considering taking a bike I could use in some of the off road sections and this was entertaining and very useful too.

Hello from Wyoming USA Artem. I’m going to walk the French Way in September so I’m gorging on RU-vid videos. I found yours and tuned in! I wish I could camp 🏕️ all the way but as a woman traveling alone I know it’s best not to invite trouble. I know there is very little trouble on the Camino. Your video was alluring on many levels. You’re young and fit, you didn’t complain one time and I loved the people who aided you in Santiago Domingo. I will seek them out in your name. Not showering for 8 or 9 days isn’t appealing however, lol. I hope to be a bit more social than you were, but again, each Camino is personal. I’ll be following you now , you’re low key and unassuming. You travel the world, HOW many languages are you fluent in, wow! 4 years ago is like yesterday, so are you going to going to Camino again, say The North Way? Sadly there’s not much on the tenting part of the trail , like finding a spot , how far away from a town or trail , did they have a campfire did they get bothered by locals or land owners.

I walked from Faro and didn't stay in any Pension or Albergue. I did stay in a couple of guesthouses though. I slept in my sleeping bag under church porches etc.

@@splashpit I'm from Scotland and my start point will be Inverness via Ireland and Rosslaire to Bilbao then to Saint Jean Pied de Port etc I injured my back 2 months ago so just getting back into training. Hoping to go in Sept all being well.
If you set up a tent late in the evening ( spend extra time resting/eating around early afternoon)and leave around sunrise. You can walk when it is cooler. Leave no signs, pick up extra litter if you can. It all helps. If every walker picked up one bag of trash per day , think of the results. Also reprimand any that are seen littering.

I literally live in the Los Padres in Pismo Beach.. You are the only one on RU-vid who is actually tenting as I plan to. I am seriously considering a Bivy purchase but my Lanshan Pro1 may do the job as Your MSR looks like the Hubba 1 man? My Camino flight is March14th as I am like you not into crowds of Newbies. Weather of course is going to be my priority concern so those stone huts may come in very useful. Being stuck in a bivy during a long storm does not seem appealing as I am 64 . My Lanshan comes in at 30 oz. or 850 grams. I want to keep my entire pack weight at 15 lbs or 6.804 kilo's Give me email address if you like as I spend a lot of time in the Sierra's a long the PCT. Thank you for sharing your trip. Did you weigh your backpack? My inner wanderer would like to put his shoes on again, grab his backpack and set off. Because of Corona, I unfortunately had to postpone my long-planned trip. The plan is also without a hostel / albergues. During 92 weeks I had accumulated vacation time (100 days), tested equipment (tent, sleeping bag, cooking system, backpack, etc.) and when the start time approached Corona came. ; ( Now the new starting point is May 1st, 2021 for my trip from Perl (Germany) to Santiago de Compostela in 100 days, through france and spain. And I'm sitting on coals all the time. I hope it can start next year.
@@PK-xt3gy No, my tour is postponed again until next year. The risk of Corona restrictions (wandering through closed regions, quarantines when crossing borders) this year (2021) was just too high for me. New starting point 1.5.2022. There is grad anyway much to do at home. But postponed is not canceled. =)
@@krystur9060 unfortunately, nothing went according to plan because of corona. In addition, a colleague from my team was planning her family, so it was not possible to work. So now the start date is 01.05.2023. This will definitely not be postponed, if necessary 1 month early and then 1 month extended to 120 days. Postponing for 3 years is enough for me. I am more than ready for the tour. And should my legs fall off, I will "walk" on my hands. =)

@@artemrakhnointernational478 thx for your video, it was quite interresting for me to see the camino from your perspective, when i have been walking many caminos the "normal" way, sleeping in albergues, 5 kg backpack. you must be really strong to carry 20 kg but i dont think it's very healthy and not so enjoyable? i couldn't help noticing that you brought a lot of heavy equipment, even 2 (!) different backpacks and a lot of different jackets. Also when camping one could do it more light weight, maybe you haven't given it much thought :-) What you call "receptionists" are actually called "hospitaleros", many of them work for free as volunteers, I myself did a few times and of course sometimes pilgrims come who have little money, whatever the reason, and we don't turn them away (I know Roncesvalles isn't a friendly place,it's a monastery not a fortress by the way, but most other albergues are). Now you know how it works and can get your Credencial (what you call card) from the beginning and get a shower every day :-) actually it's not legal to camp outside of camping sites in Spain, because if everyone would just camp where ever he wants, it would be an ecological disaster. Not all Albergues charge 10 Euros, actually it's between 5 und 15 euros (the later including breakfast), some are just donativo, means you pay what you can, so everyone can afford. What was the weight of your pack on Camino? I really want to stay under 20 lbs. Which includes my tent, quilt , stove and cold weather gear. I'm going to leap frog Jean - Port and start in Roncesvalles. Hopefully circle back after .Santiago.
Wonderful video! Did you have any problem getting permission to camp along the Way? Your journey was much more like the early pilgrims. I don't believe they had hostels in which to stay. Very impressive!
Thank you for producing and posting this documentary. I became interested in the Camino De Santiago a few months ago when I rented the film "The Way" with Martin Sheen. I have been watching videos like this ever since. I am 70 and it may be too late for me to make the pilgrimage. But I really loved this adventure and it is very well done!
I'm in my late 60's and walking the Camino dream for me is fading. I have joined a Fitness Challenge Virtual Camino Conqueror and am having a great deal of fun. I walk,ride,treadmill daily and record my distances on line...I am coming up to my first 100 km. When I complete the 770km I will get a medal!!!!
There are many people in over 70 doing the Camino. One of the options is to get your backpack sent ahead of you every day, that way you don't have the carry the weight. It costs about 5 to 10 euro depending on distance and the time of the year. In the winter the don't offer it everywhere.
Hey so glad I found you. We met a few times on the camino. You saw me camp under the olive trees near Sansol. I think we were the only two people with a tent. I’m the lady from Holland with the green backpack and frontpacks. I arrived in Fisterra 3 days after you.
I’m also glad you found me, Ruth! I remember you, and you are from Denmark! Yes I wonder why nobody does this with a tent, because it’s so easy! Maybe everybody just does like masses do without questioning it. But I met few other people who travel on Camino with a tent so we are not alone!
It's not allow free camping in Spain but if it's just one night it's ok. Maybe is because of this that people don't take their tents. Perhaps I will take mine this year because my dog will come with me and they are not accepted in the albergues. Thank you for the video and ultreia!
A great video and congratulations on your Camino. I live in Spain and camping is generally only permitted on official campsites. Wild camping, or stealth camping, does happen in some areas from time to time. However, it is illegal. For many small Spanish businesses that are based on the Camino, they would prefer you at least asked to camp on their land. They may charge or not. If they charge you, then you'd probably be allowed to use the facilities i.e. showers, toilets, clothes washing facilities. If you are unable to find accommodation in a town or village, then sometimes they might allow camping or even open up a local sports centre and supply mattresses or mats to sleep on. So there is no need to camp overnight on the Camino, especially the well established Caminos with infrastructure of albergues and other types of accommodation. Part of the Camino experience for many is the shared living experience in the various albergues. It can be challenging at times, but this is all good for you in the long run. If it gets too much, you can ask for private rooms in some albergues and other accommodation establishments. It's great that you speak some Spanish, which helped you do this type of Camino. It also opens up the experience to get to know local people. Interestingly, there are some people on Camino forums raising the subject of permitting camping, as it would enable to people to more easily maintain social distancing during their overnight stay. Mind you, I'm not sure how many people would really want to do that.
Well, it looks like we live in different worlds. Follow the restrictions if you like. And it’s not true to say that someone helped me to find a place for a tent. There’s nothing like that on video. To find a place for a tent just by yourself is very easy, no help needed. And there’s a vast land full of suitable sites for a tent far away from campgrounds, cities and villages.

What I meant to say was that you had some help in general (not about finding a place to put up a tent) from local people, for which you showed your gratitude. This is admiral on both sides, Spain is known for it's generous hospitality. I was also helped by local people and other pilgrims when I found myself in difficulties. I also tried to help others when they needed it, albeit in my own small, insignificant way. It's all a wonderful part of the Camino experience. I think you might have misunderstood my point about camping. I love camping myself, but in Spain it's currently not encouraged outside of official campsites, or land where owners have given express permission to put up a tent. So, in some areas the letter of the law can be used to fine people. On the whole it is tolerated, but not encouraged. But this does depend on where and when you are camping. Obviously, you have been very respectful in the way you did it. You are young, strong and fit; so carrying the extra load is not a problem for you. However, many pilgrims would find that difficult, or even impossible, because of health issues for example. The pilgrim experience is unique for everyone, thank you for sharing your experience in this RU-vid video. I hope to upload a video too one day, to share photos of my Camino Francés in 2018. I'm getting closer to finishing it, after all this time in lockdown here in Madrid. It won't be anywhere near as interesting as yours, as your vlog shows what it's like to walk the Camino as you walk it, and you make some great observations.
It’s totally fine. You told here your opinion. That’s good. I just mean that most of Russian travelers and civilized European hikers that’s two completely different communities. Our understanding and world view is not the same. It’s not acceptable for Russians to follow orders and stay on campgrounds when there are a lot of wild places. Most of us Russians we won’t sleep on street, but if there are a lot of beautiful locations in mountains and fields we would rather stay on them than on campgrounds. That’s just mentality. If you’re American or European you won’t understand. But I encourage everyone who stays outside of campgrounds to be especially respectful, not littering or making any harm for nature. Unfortunately there are folks who litter everywhere.
@@splashpit this is true, but you save on some other costs that you would have had staying at home. People just need to budget their trip and decide how much they can afford to do. At the end of the day, it's not really a pilgrimage in the old-fashioned sense of the word, it another aspect of Spanish tourism, albeit with a unique and special character. There are many ways one can tailor their budget to make it affordable, but it's definitely not cheap to do unless you are going to really trim it down to the bare bones. For many people, it's a once in a lifetime experience, so that needs to be taken into consideration too. Although, here in Spain, it's quite common to find people that make a regular habit of going on holiday by walking 1 or 2 weeks Camino every year, other year or every 5 years. For them, those who I've met told me this, it is a significantly cheaper holiday than more conventional alternatives - and it's much more healthy, given all the walking that is involved.

There are plenty of signs along the Camino Frances. At any point there’s very hard to get lost. Only if you go backwards(from Finisterre or Santiago to the East) it’s little bit harder. I didn’t use any map at all.

El camino de Santiago predates christian tradition, it's far more ancient than that, christians only adapted it into their religion. The pre christian pilgrimage was symbolic of the passage of one's life and about rebirth; You walk from the east where the sun is born every morning and then the walk finishes on the west coast, where the sun dies, not in Santiago.
