This video is Part Five of my journey on the Camino Primitivo, a 320 km hike through northern Spain.
In this video, I leave Grandas de Salime (northern Spain) continuing to hike the Camino de Santiago - Camino Primitivo route. This video covers days eight and nine of my 320 km hike.
The Camino Primitivo is the original, the first Camino de Santiago and the path is from Oviedo to Santiago de Compestela.
This isn't a Camino de Santiago documentary. This is a video series that I made that documents my Camino Primitivo.
If you're planning on walking the Camino then I'd like to recommend the Camino Journal. It's a useful journal for walking the Camino de Santiago includes Camino Information, Spanish Phrase Book and Blank Lined Notebook and is available on Amazon here: amzn.to/40NGrhp

I’ve had my camera stolen while trekking through Thailand. While the camera was replaced, the memory card full of images was irreplaceable. It was a sickening feeling and it took me a few days to get over it. I have been enjoying your Camino videos and hope to be there next fall. It’s refreshing to see someone be so honest about their ups & downs. Thank you for sharing this incredible journey!

I am happy to hear you got your walking poles back. They really are essential. What can happen at times is people mix up the poles, and when they realize they double back. I have had that happen, but luckily I took the poles of a pilgrim I knew, and they noticed my poles were there even though I left, so they figured I made a mistake. Not my brightest moment on the Frances but as the advice goes, do not assume malice where ineptitude is a perfectly good explanation.

Yes it is, mine and the other man’s. I believe whoever had them either realized that they took something that didn’t belong to them or thought they’d get caught. The hotel manager who drove them to us was nice to do so but we both told him that we wanted the police involved so that he could make an insurance claim and we could be reimbursed.

I think one thing you can do is put your poles in your bag so they are not out of your reach. A spirit of detachment can be a great thing to develop over time, even while protecting your essentials which are your wallet and passport. My inflatable mat failed on day 1 and I held onto it giving it a second go to see if it could be salvaged. Eventually, I had to bin it and use my backpack as my mat which worked but was not much fun. (I carried a bivvy tent with me.) In my experience, this spirit leads me to trust people far more and it usually is reciprocated in the long run. For example, a woman returned the trust by giving me a huge apartment instead of and for the price of a cheap hotel room. Another sign of this detachment is letting go when a schedule is thrown by a 24 hour tummy bug. It was hard to do but eventually after much persuasion from another, I gave in. My general attitude now is "no one wants my bag of crap", and generally 99 times out of 100 that's true. It has taken me 10 years to learn this, and it was usually because people's kindness when things go wrong is so overwhelming that it outshines mishaps.

Nice videos and hiking adventures! My take on what happened with your walking poles is that, given that they were not stolen but apparently taken by mistake, and since they were brought to you by car by the people from the hostel, one should not lose faith in humanity but quite the opposite. As for the missing pole tips, you reminded me of Humphrey Bogart in the scene of Captain Queeg and the missing frozen strawberries 😁 I think the idea of the Camino is precisely to stop being a slave to the tyranny of perfection and the missing pole tips 😉
@TrailguidePictures
@TrailguidePictures 5 месяцев назад
3 pairs of poles were missing that morning. There's no reason to have a feel-good mentality when someone takes what does not belong to them. There are jerks in the world. The idea of the camino is to do a distance walk. It's not a spiritual journey, nor has it been for a long, long time (for most people who do it). Good luck to you if you do the walk (or something more challenging) and your gear goes missing.
@neiss2
@neiss2 5 месяцев назад
@@TrailguidePictures ok, ok, agree that having your gear stolen sucks, I would be mad too. But it was returned to you and brought back by car the next day, so why not pick the good side of the story? As for the Camino being a spiritual journey, I totally agree with you, it should be lived as a nice hike, nothing more. People nowadays are spiritual junkies, they crave anything that elevates their minds and makes them unique.

We’ve done a couple of Caminos including over 1000km from Seville. Walked the last 500km on a broken foot so I feel your pain. Apropos your poles, I’d be really pissed as well. There’s quite a lot of happy clappy nonsense talked about the Camino and how we’re all supposed to be magnanimous but at the end of the day it’s your kit and no one else should be waking off with it.

Wow. So sorry to hear how things went for you. I feel exactly as you do. It’s maddening to see humanity behave the way they do. Very few of us are honest and wouldn’t think to steal another’s belongings let alone just touching them. It’s not about getting over it and moving on. Nobody should have taken them to begin with. Yes fortunately you got them back. But the fact is that your possessions that you depend on were taken and caused you hardship. Most in this world have no moral compass. This was a sobering video and I at least felt your disgust.

I love your videos, and I've chosen to watch them because they give such detailed info on the views you can encounter on the Camino Primitivo, the highlights and challenges. I noticed however that you are really getting petty with life situations. You'll meet honest and lovely people as well as those who have been hurt by life and circumstances and are acting on different sets of values. This is normal and you can see it everywhere. I'm really sorry that going out of your comfort zone didn't allow you to let go of certain things. These views are definitely worth experiencing certain challenges and I again thank you for those clips, so I know which camino to choose now. I hope life will treat you well and you'll learn to adjust to the greatness of the Universe so only great things will come your way. 🤗💜🙌

Shitty people are always there to temp dragging you down when you're already struggling, but it isn't worth it. For you, for your trip, for this time in your life when you set off to accomplish something. They're not worth it, they don't deserve that much of your energy, and you deserve better than to have your trip semi ruined because of that person who may not be giving it any thought, or could always have been an accident. I have several people in my family that are thoughtless that way. It's not okay, but it's not always malicious. For me personally, I think it's pretty bold and awesome to go and accomplish and endeavor like this. It's very inspiring. Mental fortitude comes from all kinds of challenges in life. 💜

@@TrailguidePictures One possibility struck me. It might be that someone had identical poles, except for not having the tips, and took what they thought was theirs and put them in their bag, then forgetting their poles, went back to keep their poles to go walking. They realised they had a second set and brought them back but brought back the wrong set. Some people are on automatic for a couple of hours in morning and don't fully wake up until coffee. I myself have left my poles behind on 3 occasions, twice I went back for but the other time I tried to get them passed on and in the end they were left behind as a gift for another walker than might need them.

Get over it, shit happens. It was super nice of the dude to get in contact with and go out of his way to return your poles....yet you don't mention how appreciative you were? To be honest you came across as an unstable person is this video

@@dwrivers47 Nah, I think my comment was spot on. Constructive criticism isn't always a bad thing

Nice video, except for the commentary, which just reads as a desecration of the pilgrimage. All your videos show the desecration in your energy. You are there to exploit and belittle something you won’t understand. Also, no one stole anything from you. You can’t claim to have lost your possessions to thieves when those items are in your hands. Mistakes happen. You taking a pilgrimage with a resolutely cynical heart was definitely a mistake.

When I walked the French Way I kept my passport and money in a pouch hanging inside my clothes. Even slept with this and brought it into the shower. I met several pilgrims that had money stolen while in the alburges. One fellow kept going and lived off the charity of other pilgrims. I don’t think I would have the pluck to keep going if I were robbed. Thanks for being honest with your experience. Red red

Thanks. Yeah, I think it’s important to be honest about these things.
