In this video, we will be looking at Camlock Couplings. We stock these in three different materials, General Purpose Aluminum, Polypropylene, and Stainless Steel. Camlocks are a quick connect coupling and are typically used to connect hoses together or to a pipe fitting and often used in conjunction with portable equipment such as motorised pumps. The Camlock material type is determined according to the application, for example, Stainless Steel is often used in hygiene applications or where corrosion is a factor, Polypropylene is often used where an element of chemical resistance is required, and GP Aluminum for most other general-purpose applications such as irrigation. Camlock Couplings come in a variety of configurations each with either a male or female camlock part. These are usually supplied with either a hosetail, male, or female thread connection. In addition, the range includes blanking options known as a Dust Cap or Dust Plug.
Let’s start by looking at the Aluminum Camlock range.
- Each item in this range is available in sizes from 20mm through to 150mm and the pressure rating will vary for the different sizes.
- Pressure ratings are relevant at an operating temperature of 20℃, which if exceeded, pressure de-rating applies.
- The Aluminum Camlocks have an operating temperature range of -40° to +100℃.
- Camlock arms are brass and the pivot pins are stainless steel.
- These Camlocks come fitted with Buna-N seals, which are durable and offer good sealing characteristics. Viton seals can be supplied on request which are compatible with many chemicals and higher temperatures up to 180°C. The operating pressure must be de-rated if used above 20℃.
The Polypropylene camlocks are available in sizes 20mm through to 100mm, and once again, the pressure ratings are taken at 20℃ and will vary according to the size.
- Polypropylene Camlocks have a temperature rating of -10℃ to 80℃.
- The arms are made from stainless steel.
- These also have a Buna-N Standard seal as standard, however, like the Aluminum Camlocks, they are also compatible with the alternate seal options that we offer.
- Temperature ratings of these seals are higher than that of the fittings; so this will have to be derated to the temperature rating of the fittings.
The 316 Stainless steel Camlocks are available in sizes 15mm to 150mm.
- The pressure ratings are the same as the GP Aluminum range relative to each size and have an operating temperature range of -40℃ to 100℃.
- The arms and pivot pins are made from stainless steel also.
- The standard seal for these camlocks is Nitrile or NBR.
Installation:
When installing these fittings, hosetail camlocks are fitted to the end of a hose or tube, and the levers are locked down which pulls the adaptor part firmly against the seal located inside the female camlock and keeps the two camlock coupling parts locked together.
You should never connect Aluminum and Polypropylene Camlocks as this may result in damage or splitting of the camlocks.
Sometimes the levers can be very tight when fitting the camlocks together, especially with metal camlocks when the coupling and lever cams are dry. A small amount of grease on the cam will make connecting easier and reduce the chance of damage.
If vibration is present in operation, the levers should be strapped in the closed position to eliminate accidental opening of the coupling.
In the event parts have become damaged, accessories for camlock couplings are available including seals, levers, and pins.
