In this video I’ll show a very simple method of setting the magnetic declination on a Cammenga H3 lensatic compass - this method also works on prismatic compasses.
i was a Scout in the U.S. Army in a long range recon patrol. I always keep up with those skills. I have the same compass you got. i Kept mine as a reminder of my time . Now i am a desert Rat, basically a long range hiker. one or two degrees is not a danger close importance . Your video was very simple and highly effective. Thank you !
Great video and thank you for sharing. Love your videos, I find them very practical and entertaining at the same time. I did comment to one of your previous lensatic compass video which was very helpful. I have always been using the Suunto MC2 with adjustable declination, so with my new Cammenga I am now using manual calculations to make adjustments. I do agree with you, that you don't need to orient the map. I am not sure if this is useful but with my cammenga, when it comes to getting bearings to and from map using the compass I have made the simple summary. (A) In order to transfer Map Bearing to Magnetic Bearing(onto compass) > Map Bearing - Magnetic Declination=Magnetic Bearing (B) In order to transfer Magnetic Bearing to Map Bearing(onto map) > Magnetic Bearing + Magnetic Declination = Map Bearing Cheers
if you have an azimuth that you can't divide by 3, and if you have a plastic protractor you can add or subtract degrees of declination, drawing a new line of corrected path direction with the degrees of declination and taking a new measurement with the compass, or am I wrong? You certainly need to carry a protractor and pencil, but usually on my long walks I have always had them
Yep! Very simple, but part of the puzzle nonetheless. You didn’t explain just exactly what declination was though? Or, why we need to know? I enjoyed another great vid. Thought I might go out and buy one of these Cammenga compasses. £140!! I’m still thinking about it. Thank you.
Declination is the difference of location of true magnetic north. Because it changes all the time in a uniform manner we can compensate for it. There is a calculation that can be done if you want to do it yourself . The magnetic declination for a map is stated the bottom of the map as well as the year of publication which is also necessary for the calculation
I mean, the 3H doesn't even have single degree resolution on the dial. It only has marks every 2.5 degrees. If you actually need high precision you'd probably use the mils scale.
I have a Silva with a magnetic declination adjustment. Makes me wonder why the Army hasn't specified that as a feature on their compasses. Makes it trival, set and forget for the day.
I think it’s as the US army (like all armies) has really expert people who know everything about navigation with a map and compass. I can’t say too much, obviously, but wait until next Thursday 18/6/24 and watch my Declination with Resection video - this will demonstrate why semi-permanent declination adjustment is a really bad idea, unless you’re a novice (which the US army isn't), when it’s, sort of, OK. (I have LOTS of navigation videos already on YT, but I don’t post them all at once - most of them are scheduled for future dates)
@@TheMapReadingCompany Ok, but I find that even though I'm really good at math, when I'm under pressure I make mistakes. Hence I have an altimeter in meters, and another one in ft. So that depending on which countries maps I'm using, I don't have to translate
@@TheMapReadingCompany Also large groups like the army don't like change as 1/2 the people do it one way, and another the other way, and pretty soon you are shelling your own troops.
if I understand correctly it is not necessary to move the map with the Cammenga on top, orienting it in advance towards the north, with this procedure the map does not matter how it is placed. Is that so? Thanks for his kind explanation.
For those who are wondering, Cammenga compasses are the officially issued compasses of the United States Army (even to this day). They are still manufactured in the United States, and are considered by many to be the highest quality compasses in the world.
@SergeantExtreme: Cammenga compass is double tough and with proper stewardship and care will probably be around long after the plastic civilian compasses have been trashed and give up the ghost.
@@danjarvis6980 I have mine that I was given by my CO after proving his compass course was off. Over the years it started to get cloudy inside the lens, and I thought I was going to have to send it off someplace until I found a youtube video that showed how to clean and refurbish it. It was very easy, and now looks new again, except the tritium doesn't glow anymore.
