Ah, yes. Drove this going from Great Basin NP headed towards City of Rocks in Idaho. It feels very isolated. We are very self sufficient and know we can self-rescue ourselves from most situations, but still a disconcerting feeling driving down this road which seems to go nowhere... I think we saw two vehicles in just over an hour.

Thanks for the hide-a-key reminder Rick! I ordered one from Amazon before continuing with the video. One thing to think about for folks who may live in wetter parts of the country is to wrap the key in plastic before hiding it away as it may rust over the years in such an environment. I agree with "hide a key" anywhere safe but accessible when you forgot or lock in your keys. I do it on our rv travel trailers, our house, and vehicles. It beats destroying a window to access in or waiting for help in the middle of no where. Thanks for the reminder!

You two love birds have come a long way. Thank you for your work and dedication to the RV and simple life community! Wife and I along with our tree four legged companions have been a full-time rv dwellers/modern pioneers going soon to our seventh year anniversary. We have done mostly 90% boondocking/off grid living on our trusty 31 feet ORV travel trailer. We will soon go part time travels since we are still in the work force. We are very glad and blessed to have explore these lifestyle in our early age while working full-time. Again, thank you and take care! God bless you both and yours.

It is a photochemical phenomenon that is not yet perfectly understood. It is generally accepted that the ultra-violet light initiates an electron exchange between the manganese and iron ions. This changes the manganese compound into a form that causes the glass to turn purple.

Wow! To be out there like that is so awesome, however, it can be a little spooky too! I've had many occasions out in a desert in CA, NM and AZ where I wouldn't see another soul for hours. I know this video was taped before our recent flood of Northern lights, but I sure hope wherever you are that you get to see them. They have been spectacular here in the Flathead Valley! Be safe and have fun! And yes, being out there like that does make one feel a little Biblical for sure❤

Beautiful little slice of Heaven out there. I wonder if the cattle mysteriously knapping along the road were the result of an Alien Buffet? I love those long empty roads in Nevada and Utah. I keep an extra 5 gallon tank of gas in the Truck Camper just for those situations where you're on a long highway where I'm getting 8 to 11 mpg, then pull off to explore a side road for several miles where I'm getting 6 mpg. You can easily find yourself running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere. Take care guys.

I used to live in Ogden and I would go out Hwy 30 to target practice every weekend. It is absolutely beautiful there. I really miss that place. Texas is great but it can’t hold a candle to Utah.

Yep, Hwy 50, in Nevada, can be lonely. I supported an Air Force LORAN-D station at Middlegate (110 miles east of Reno on 50) from 1972 - 1974. Given how infrequently we saw vehicles on Hwy 50, I wouldn't drive Hwy 30 in Utah without a satellite phone or a Garmin Inreach.

Great video as usual 👍. Good tip on the ‘hide-a-key’ too. For those that have the very expensive ($75-$100+) fob type key , like most newer rigs now, you can usually get a plain old flat key made that will at least unlock your door for just a few bucks. I bought a 2012 Jeep Wrangler about a year ago and sometimes I would come back to it and it would be locked when I didn’t remember locking it. Thought it was locking itself, maybe a Jeep quirk and they have a few. Usually in the ‘TIPM’ ,module inside the fuse box (RU-vid it), starting to go bad . Luckily that prompted me to get a hide-a- key because it happened, one day I got out along a road without shutting it off and when returned the door was locked, I would have been in a pickle. What I have later discovered is that when I reach to open the door with my fingers the heel of my hand sometimes brushes the lock button.

Back in 1985 my mom decided to pick up stakes from CT and move to CA. I drove a 10k gross U Haul. Here in CT ten miles is about the farthest between gas pumps. Well, got to Utah line on hwy 70 and saw a sign saying "Last gas before state line". Truck was over 3/4 so kept driving. Turned out next gas was 120 miles away in Green River. After adventures in Cisco and $20 for 5 gal gas I arrived in Green River at a gas station. Turns out next fill-up was 110 miles away at St. George. Seems like very little has changed since. The West just doesn't modernize. When you mentioned all the things needed to cross the desert it reminded me of that trip. Nice to get a video from you guys. BTW did you make it to Britt? Shoestring got a nice sendoff. Enjoyed the video. See ya next week.

Posting this just 5 minutes in: "Look at the view. Yeah. This'll do." I could spend three days there, just sitting in the shade my my trailer awning, absorbing the great distances, the vastness, and most of all, the lack of civilization. Why? Because it re-creates me. As for any creature comforts, we don't need much that's not in the trailer: refrigerated food, canned food, water, coffee! heat, tools for tinkering, tools for protection and a nice, comfy bunk. Tom Mahood commented on the region in Inyo County where the Death Valley Germans' evidence of remains were discovered... Tom said, "This place is so remote it scares me." That, coming from a seasoned desert explorer; one who has spent most of his life camping in and "looking for cool [stuff] in the desert". Now then, back to this fascinating video.

This is a superbly-timed video, you two. It is impetus to get the last touches done on the trailer and head out. Right now I'm doing some substantial upgrades to my truck's off-highway capability. When I run street psi’s in TW’s other cousin XT two fitty the front is like a basketball off road. Ear regardless of what tire. I have Ax41’s due to pavement and gravel travel and rain in summer. They are pretty rugged. First time I did a “trail air down” also known as I forgot my gauge I arrived back at camp with 2 psi in front. Bit low. I run 12 ish …

Loneliness highway is highway 50, but only applies in Nevada section. Guess the lack of water was the problem with the cows and Nevada is the driest state in the country and you’re in 1 of the most isolated areas in America.

I hide a key in a magnetic case. When I needed the key-all that was left was the magnet 🤔 Next try, I wrapped a key in paper towels placed in a ziplock bag and zip tied it to my spare tire under the mimivan. After two years the key had corroded so bably-I would have been afraid to use it. Now I have a plastic fob and no idea how to/where to hide it ?!

There is a reason for the desolation-that land is not fit for man or beast and could be very cruel for the unprepared. Didn't see one cow, deer, or any fauna at all in this video. Those dead cows you saw probably died from thirst or starvation, attracted to the road and fence line in hopes of finding a helpful human.

One dead cow per mile. One grave per mile. On the most desolate road. Sounds like the beginning of some type of Halloween story. I agree with the beauty of God’s creation. Yeap, if we aren’t going to praise God, the rocks will cry out.
