This video shows how to use an ordinary tarp to protect a camper roof from snow, ice, rain and the damaging rays of the sun. I've been using this method successfully for the past three years, but watch as strong winds threaten to blow away my latest efforts.

Thank u for ur video! It's exactly what I needed, covering everything from how and where to run the rope/cords to getting started with rolling and unrolling the tarp on the roof. I love how u followed up with the necessary modifications after the bad weather. It's the most comprehensive video I've found on this subject.

Great video, thank you! Watching you roll up the tarp on the ground to unroll on top, I thought, "Ah, just like covering a pie with the crust!" :)

I like the tarp idea exclusively for roof winter protection. I had full rv cover for only 2 years. It got shredded in the wind. I think this is a much economic solution to keep rain and snow and here in New Mexico, UV rays beating down on my roof. I did make sure to have a air pass under tarp. Fortunately, we average about 10 15 percent humidity, so don’t have to worry about mold and mildew like Midwest or the east.

I like the idea of running cord through all the eyelets. Wind can be a real PROBLEM. I placed boards, plywood and flat pavers on top of the tarp in an effort to hold it down. Most of that blew off like jumping on a trampoline. All it needed was one slack pocket and the gusts would turn the tarp into a sail. Bungies helped to slow it down. I also placed some foam cushions over the corners of the camper ( under the tarp to protect sharp corners ) Most tarps only hold up for a few months in TEXAS sun. So get quality heavy duty tarps for longer wear in severe weather. JwgK

I went through trial by wind too. It took several modifications to finally keep it on. Good advice on the qualtiy tarps.

They also don't last long in Northern Michigan, for different reasons lol. My tarp (heaviest tarp harbor freight sells, about $75 after coupon) lasted well through 1 winter, then 3/4 of this one. I like the idea of weighing it down, but it didn't stand a chance this year. A buddy let me store it at his place because he has more property, and I was worried about the fact that my house is in the woods and I've already had to patch the roof due to a falling branch when the snow and ice got heavy on the trees. What I didn't take into account is how much stronger the winds are in his open field. It ripped the grommets right out of the edges and left the paracord dangling from the camper, with all those little metal eyelets on it like ornaments. Finally broke down and bought a proper camper cover with straps that wrap under the camper, but my plan now is to build a peak roof frame from pvs to strap to the top, add a few sheets of marine plywood, put the tarp over that, strap it down tight and take my chances with the trees. Trying to fight those winter winds coming off Lake Michigan is an exercise in futility lol.

@Doug Tate don't let the tarp outsmart you figure out how to allow air to flow underneath it it's not rocket science

That's too bad about your roof. I only use this in the winter, for about 4 months, to keep the snow off.

Mr. The Original Mechanic I live in my 5th wheeler. Need so much done. But I bought a tarp, some rope, not as thick, need to get a few more supply's. I manely want it for winter. But discovered after the sealing on roof that it still leaks. What would you recommend for after winter? This video is great, thanks so much.

I would imagine some kind of roof sealant would work.Check with an RV supplier. They will know more about this. Thanks for watching and good luck!

Can the air conditioner be used under a tarp?
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 2 года назад
No it can't. It wouldn't be effective and would likely overheat and possibly be damaged.

Is it okay to cover the air vent that’s on the top?
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 3 года назад
Hmm, I don't know. I never worried about that and had no issues during the three winters I used this. I only covered this camper from Nov-Mar during snow season where I live.
