My grandpa used to work in this camp. His name was Chester Brown. Chet for short. His nickname was buzz since he loved to drink. His still alive today I’ve been looking all over this video to see if I can see him in it. I don’t know if he ever went to this party but I’ll have to ask him sometime.
Thank you for posting this! I have hiked old, decommissioned forest roads all over the OP…found some great logging artifacts (equipment), and find it amazing what these people did given the working conditions!
This video has to be from the 80’s I’d imagine? I was just a boy back then but vividly remember riding in the truck with my dad in high country just like this. He was #1 driver for North Fork Timber co. For years. They sure don’t do it like this anymore. But these kind of memories is what makes me sit behind the wheel of a log truck today. Cool video and even cooler to know ppl still have stuff like this around. Most of the old timers that can teach the new generation of loggers a thing or two are just about gone so we need this stuff if for nothing else to show the newbies how easy they have it these days.
Sounds like my old boss. Telling me how easy I have it running the chipper and being the ground guy. Let me tell you it was when I work at camp grisdale! He would tell me all kinds of stories about that place. Your lunch your gas and saw. And would not be seen tell the end of the day. Funny thing he is 70 plus and still runs a tree company. Don't know how he even gets up those trees anymore. 😳
There's still outfits that do it this way! And there's mills that'll take the wood too. Logged 6 to 7 footers on tiger just a few months back. Bullet. 40nft chokers and all
Thank you very much for this high quality video of the last days of Camp Grisdale I believe the log trucks were sent to Africa to log the rainforest there , what a sad ending to an era with camp Grisdale and camp Govey in the high country logging business.
This on the 256. We were hung all the way across Trout Creek. Had about 9000 ft of skyline out at the farthest we were yarding 2500 ft. Sat there all summer.
I remember the mainline on the last spar tree up by Trout creek. The mainline was about as long as this one or longer. My Dad was Danny Isom. He worked at Grisdale from November, 1958 thru February, 1977.
A few good turns coming in on what’s gotta be close to 2 miles of skyline. And that is one hell of a massive tower. Gotta be 100-120ft tube on that yarder. Love it!
working for Erickson Air Crane in the late 70's Erickson got a contract to log the rock bluffs on the east side of Lake Wynoochee above Grisdale for Simpson ,they fed our crew in the cook house there
Does anyone remember where this first side was? At first I thought it was Canyon River. but some things just don't add up. It was a long time ago. I worked for Bob most of my 10 year tenure up there. He was the best.
My dad worked for CZ up until he died in 1983 my sister said, when she was in school in molalla she was watching a film in class about logging and to her surprise our dad was in it I think she said he was taking ring samples of a tree to see how old it was this was back early 70s maybe even 1969 I’m trying to find that film i’m thinking at the time that film was made we might’ve been living in Vernonia I’m going to try to contact the school in Molalla and see if if they have any information to help me track down this film I know it’s been many many years but ironically as I looked at the school contact list an old neighbor of mine who I used to hang out and play with is in the technology department there at the school so I’m gonna try calling him this coming week and see if he can maybe help track this movie down cause I’m not sure if they have it in their own library at the time or something they ordered or checked out from another library and then returned it be very special to be able to find that film.
my dad,,,bob scott,,, did contract cutting for simpson co back.then. we cut a big unit up.trout cr, it was all burnt nasty steep ground,,, my dad told me when I was breaking in cutting,,,if u can survive cutting on grisdale ground,, u can cut any where,,,, he cut 75 units between camp grisdale,,canyon river,, camp govey. big ass trees

Hung walking guy’s on a Berger tower at camp Grisdale using a sledgehammer and railroad spikes,,, great big Berger tower man could that sucker pull , hence the walking guy
If 3 grizzly bears entered that shop party, i fear only one could make it out alive! If guys today threw a shop party, they would all drop their white claw drinks if a kitten strolled in😂😂
I heard a story from Grandpa that one day all the men were out of camp working when a black bear came into camp. One of the women grabbed a rifle and bear stew was dinner that night.
In the woods in Scotland, Some guys had pictures of naked women on thier walls , We had pictures of locking carriages and the Aberdonians had pictures of 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑 😘🏴
