Beautiful and serene, Lake Wenatchee State Park sits nestled within the edges of the eastern foothills of the Cascade mountains in Washington State. This dog friendly ‘North’ campground (RV sites with water and power only hookups + dump station) is one of our favorites, and was our go-to summer camping destination for a decade when our kids were young.
Summers here are crowded, but it’s still a wonderful place to camp. This was our first time visiting in spring, and it was fantastic. Only a handful of other campers in our loop the entire weekend, and the weather held up most of the time. It does rain here even in summer, so be prepared with appropriate gear. Fall is stunning, with the vine maples turning and the red mushrooms popping up everywhere out of the earth. Also, the mosquitoes in June are the worst when the weather warms up, and can stick around until mid July. August is great with hot days for lake activities, and cool nights to sit by the campfire.
What we love most about this location, is that the campsites are roomy, the walking trails (which are open for skiing and snowshoeing in winter when the campgrounds are closed) are easily accessible, and the lake access is excellent. There are convenient restrooms, a small older play area, picnic tables, and benches near the beach. A more modern play structure is located within the campsite loop.
The shoreline can be explored from several locations, each providing its own special view of this most popular location. The main day use area with a true swimming beach (roped off with buoys but no lifeguard ), picnicking, and boat launch is located at the ‘South’ campground and features SUP and kayak rentals during summer. You can even take a guided trail ride on horseback from the stables near the entrance to the park.
Being so close (about 20 minutes) to Leavenworth proper, it’s easy to break away and head into the Bavarian styled village for a little shopping, imbibing and sampling of the local cuisine. It was also an easy drive from here to get to the canyons featured in the last two videos. I must say, there is never enough time to “do it all”, hence the reason we’ve been returning here for so long!
There is LOTS to do in Leavenworth in every season! There are hikes, scenic drives, fishing on the dock or with a boat rental at nearby Fish Lake, the Saturday farmer’s market in Plain, floating the Wenatchee River, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, sleigh rides, snowmobile rentals… I can’t possibly list it all.. I guess you’ll just have to find out for yourself!
We hadn’t been here to camp in 12 years. When we walked down to the beach and I saw the lake and where we had spent so much time with our kids, I felt the breeze catch a tear and turn my cheek cold. Such great memories . I hope you’ll make some here, too. Lake Wenatchee State Park is a very special place, and I’m so happy to share it with you.
Thanks for dropping by, and I hope you’ll plan a visit soon… book as far in advance as you can if coming in summer. Shoulder seasons are quieter hence the sheer bliss we were able to experience, and it is SO, so beautiful if the weather is good. This was a long description due to the personal connection here… as we travel I will feature campgrounds with shorter ones!😉
Please enjoy the tranquil setting we experienced, and… I’ll catch ya next time!♥️
