It's as useful to hear about what has been used and is no longer, and the reasons why, as it it is to be told "got this, you should get it". More useful, I'd say - so thanks for that.

I imagine Paul has an underground basement at home packed full of tents and cool camping gear that he walks into each morning, music begins as he strokes his beard, closes the eyes then he points in a zen way to the gear that will be used that day.

Solar panels have their use. On a 19 day canoe trip it recharged my powerbank several times, I just rested it against the tent and had the bank under the fly and repositioned it a few times during the day. It was slow, but I had all the time in the world so it didn't matter.

i took one on a 5 week trek in the altai mountains of western mongolia - no battery shops there! just strapped it to the top of my pack and it really paid for itself, charging my gps and head torch. i use it on multi day hikes in scotland also
@johne.wilson813
@johne.wilson813 2 года назад
@@themoodyteam We might have differing ideas of the concept of a canoeing trip, for me that doesn't have to mean to paddle to new camps every day. I can paddle/portage for two days and then spend a week in the same spot, doing day hikes from there etc. Sometimes you spend the entire day at camp fishing etc. then you have ample opportunity to go and readjust your solar panel as many times as you like without it interfering with much of what you do. On the other hand, if canoeing for you is the compulsive need to spend hours of each day just sitting in the canoe paddling away then you have a very fair point. Note I was on a canoe trip, not a canoe tour.

I've combined the sawyer squeeze and the hydrapak hydrant pump kit to make my own more efficient trail shot. It can also pump water directly into my water reservoir in my pack. My use of camping gear is for bicycle touring so the weight is not such a crucial thing as for backpacking with it all on your back. 1. The tent - good to know. I have long been considering between the Soulo and the Akto as a replacement for my 1-person tent. This confirms it for me, the Akto it will be. Our tent for 2 is the Nallo 2GT and it is over 2kg; I would honestly be OK to carry this on my bike even for solo tours. 2. Sit-pad. A thing I do not use. The Helinox Chair One is FAR more comfortable and easy to carry on the bike than a pad like that. 1kg of comfort, worth every gram. 3. Alcohol stove. I would use the Trangia in preference. I like a pair of larger pots to cook with anyhow, as I often do regular meals (pasta/rice, fresh veggies, some salami or tinned fish) and one tiny narrow pot is never going to cut the mustard. BTW at 100 quid, where I am a Trangia set is going to cost about the same money ($A200). 4. Sleeping bags. I normally use my sleeping bag zipped open 90% as a doona on my Exped matt, but on some colder nights (like 2 nights ago) I may find the zipped up bag and even the hood to be very necessary.

Absolutely agree with you on the MSR Trailshot. I started with a Sawyer Mini, then bought the Trailshot. It let me down badly once (took a LOT of cleaning out and it never seems to have been the same since) and it’s just really hard work and a faff to use. I then bought a Sawyer micro and I absolutely love it! Easy to use - I can even set it up to gravity feed from one ‘bag’ into the other. It’s perfect, in my view.

The Evernew set is the best set on the market, IMO. A 750ml pot for food, a 400ml pot for tea/coffee, and that spirit burner is the best in the business - so fast and reliable, including in deep cold or at altitude. The entire set weighs next to nothing and mine is still going strong after half a decade of use. In the pot I've stacked a burner, 2.5 oz of fuel, a titanium foil windshield, lighter, firesteel (backup), spoon, and Swiss Army Waiter knife. Tiny, light, fully-featured package.

Hey Paul. As always nice video! I usually use my foam mat not only for sitting or extra insulation for my sleeping mattress, but for my back insulation on my Osprey with airscape panel in cold weather, or as back support for my frameless backpack too. Very useful item. I even used it beneath my tent on very rocky terrain in Iceland. I see myself kinda going the same way. To learn more and to find the "best" item for a particular hike or camping spot I starting to have multiple items too. Perhaps this is how it goes for every backpacker. Just because it is very hard to know what is best for you at the beginning. Later new better items appear in our eyesight, so we are kinda keen to try new ones. Usually, if they work better we already can't live without them. I wish there were only 1-2 items to choose from in any category :))))) but to our advantage and disadvantage, it will never be that way...

I just used the Soulo for over three weeks on Corsica . I did place the Tent in locations with no shadows (and a Tarp) and 40 °C, in forests with giant ants, near lakes. On mountain rivers, near beaches with 4 meter waves. Not a single night was too hot for me or I did feel uncomfortable, quite the opposite actually. I always had the door at least 3/4 closed. In the early evening i had the inner tent open And around midnight, I closed it so the ants couldn't get in. Two days i didnt use the vent rain cover. One day we had a heavy Storm where other QUECHUA tents got blown away or flooded and many Tarps ripped in half. My tent and vestibule (with groundsheet) was totally surrounded with brown water with earth and sand, not because i did place it wrong, it was just raining so much that there was a stream of water everywhere. I actually have a picture that someone else made that was outside saving his stuff while i was inside. I had some water in my vestibule and between the groundsheet and my tent was alot of dirt, but thats about it ;). I've been camping for 39 Years now (and have lots of tents) and obviously there is not a single "best" tent. But the Soulo RL is a absolute beast and the strength-to-weight ratio insane. I did use this tent in the Winter in Switzerland for two weeks in Verbier and other places with snow storms where i had to dig the entire tent out in the morning :P I have Huskys and a Samojede sled dogs but i think the Soulo is a true Solo tent and the space for a Dog is not enough for more than a night or two. PS: The fact that this tent is freestanding and you can just move it to another spot is one of my favorite "features" and i use it often :) Cheers from Switzerland

Definitely agree on the Evernew stove. Over uses fuel and gets very hot as the flames lick up the outside. If using metho the Trangia Triangle is the way to go. However for trips longer than a week where weight become more of an issue I'll take my MSR Windboiler or better Primus Lite+. I have several tents including the Suolo but agree the Hilleberg is more a specialist for 4 seasons. Having said that I still use it in gentler climes because it is so easy to erect especially when raining....All in all I always enjoy your reviews Paul. They are well balanced, thoughtful and honest. About solar panels, yes, I have an old PowerAdd 20W solar charger which is quite usefull when going camping for more than 2-3 days. It's about the same size folded but twice as big/long as yours when unfolded. The way I ideally make this work is to hook it up to a big powerbank and leaving it at camp to charge all day, so it works best when I leave my gear at a fixed spot. The powerbank is then used at night to charge phones and other gear. I quickly figured charging phones and gear directly from the panel just wasted cycles and also made the gear unusable as it would have to lie there all day charging. Placed correctly the panel is efficient enough to charge even in cloudy weather, and even quick charges in those brief optimal conditions. Btw: Love your videos 👍 Also guilty of searching for that ultimate "tool" and ending up with a lot of spare gear as how I do camping and hiking evolves. Keep on, keeping on! Best regards from Norway.

Some great common sense, 'real use' experience comments in here Paul. I managed to set a Soulo second-hand though and whilst I'll only be likely to use it for 2-3 nights a year, what great nights those will be - but it's a luxury to have such a tent in the cupboard for such infrequent use.

I got the hilli unna and its been fine , I think winter is generally colder wetter and u will spend more time in the tent cause of darkness perspiring moisture and cooking , , , yer wet clothes also more likely to bring moisture inside tent , this is generally the time I would use it, when is cold and wet 🙂

I think most people at Hilleberg think most British customers are literally insane for spending a grand just to do a few overnighters in Summer. If as many as 1% of British Hilleberg tents get used in the conditions they're genuinely or then I'd be shocked. You see them littering the West Highland Way, people look so proud when strutting around them but come out dishevelled because there's no airflow.

Re. sleeping bags. I bought the Haglöfs Lim down sack earlier this year. I've always had a problem with zips and this has none. No problem to get in and out though, less than dealing with zip snags. Just pull it on like a big sock in two steps. Plenty of space inside and I normally have an issue with tight bags. ( I'm not a small bloke). Weight only 500g and comfort +1 though I have used down to -15 with a liner, down socks and insulated shorts on top of merino underlayers. At that level I was just ok on a Thermarest neoair max mat and I am a warm sleeper.

I have an Anker Powerport Solar but mine has three panels, probably 3/4 years old? I wouldn't take it if on my own (20,000mAh bank instead) but when family camping I leave it hanging on the tent for the day and it will do a 10,000mAh power bank in a day on a sunny day so pretty handy for keeping the walkie talkies topped up, topping up the power bank etc.

I've got a bunch of sit pads. They are excellent for padding cameras, lenses and other electronics while hiking. Also nice to give completely frameless packs some structure or for wrapping a bottle to keep it warm/cold. I use a plastic shopping bag to sit on and reuse it as a garbage bag when it's worn out. I'm sure the Hilleberg Soulo is a excellent tent, but seem incredibly overengineered and heavy for normal use. Most likely really suited for winter camping above treeline and trips were weight isn't an issue. For the hikes you show in the videos it seem like overkill. Good decision to get rid of it IMO.

Hi Paul, I love my Evernew ti stove but agree on the price and not as adaptable as a trangia. I’ve worked out how best to use it, and getting just the right amount of fuel in etc. I also found out that it can ‘simmer’ by putting your pan/mug directly on the stove so it just heats with the side jets. I just love how it all nestles inside my Alpkit ti mug and is so so light…but at a price of course! Thanks for your honest reviews. Atb Bill..

I brought a 15W solar charger for a recent family camping trip, to boost the charge on the 20,000mAh battery pack, and charge phones directly, 1x fast charge, or 2x slow charge. It worked very well on sunny days, and not so much on cloudy days. The thicker the clouds, the worse the charge. Still though, it's compact, and does work well on sunny days, which is when I plan to go camping anyway lol

a very good lightweight 4 season tent for the UK, instead of the heavier & bulkier Soulo is the Sigma Lightwave S-15, only weighs 1.3Kg and with the poles stored separately, can be folded and compressed down to not much bigger than a rolled up insulated jacket. It's single skin & free standing but can be pegged out for high wind situations, very resistant to condensation because the inner material has been treated. Highly recommend it.

Haha on the stove! I'm constantly reassessing. Did a bit of gear swapping this year. Always looking for redundant gear, e.g., can my cook pot be my coffee mug. I've used tons of stoves. Finally ended up with a JetBoil Stash. I leave the support bracket at home and the pot is my mug. The pot needs a cozy. Working on that one :)

I have a terra nova comp 1 and the soulo black label. Honestly the soulo is the one I’d take every time in the uk as wind batters the terra nova and it keeps me awake. The soulo is basically silent in comparison. Plus it looks cooler 😎🤣 I take the terra nova out every now and then just because I feel it needs the use. But the soulo is so good literally everywhere whether it’s up a mountain or on a beach or in a quarry or cave it’s just an everything tent and I love it so much. Also condensation has been basically the same as I’ve experienced in the terra nova, nowhere near what I thought it would be!

I use a solar panel in the UK all the time, and yes unless it's really gloomy/cloudy you get decent charge - during the summer I was getting 50-100% top ups of my 10000mAh battery. The main difference I think is solar is best if you are stopping somewhere for a day and can leave it, it's not great on a pack/hiking. My panel is also really old, a 7 watt one from Maplins. Also some batteries charge better from solar than others - the EAFU batteries are great, older Anker ones can struggle, the older batteries use to be best but they are gettng better at detecting variable charging from panels. Used to be a lottery getting a battery that would work with it, most do now.

Re. solar panel - I bought a panel here in Sweden this year for about 50 pounds. 21w I think. It has successfully given charges in a variety of lighting. However I would say more for a fixed multiday camp or a very long wilderness trip off grid. For a one to two day camp I take the battery pack.

TBH Paul, with UK weather most of us are probably much better off with one of those portable wind turbines than a solar panel, mostly for the reason you mentioned. we hardly get decent enough sun exposure to make one of those properly useful, especially if you live in a mountainous region.

I found using the solar to keep a battery pack charged up is more efficient. Phones take ages on solar and we are just to impatient to wait. I know it's a little extra to carry but if you can't be without your device it just gives you that bit extra. We use an everready 20000 pack. Anything smaller isn't worth it as most phones are around 7000 up now
@geoffdillon4637
@geoffdillon4637 2 года назад
I believe it’s because the battery pack takes any amount of charge from a solar charger whereas a phone needs a constant input. I tried the Choetech solar charger - in blazing sun and angled at 45 degrees (as Choetech support told me was necessary) it charged my phone and power bank pretty quickly. But without those conditions it’s almost useless.
