Hi everyone, happy St. Patrick's Day! The Rav4 has finally arrived, of course, I had to camp in it within 24 hours of getting the keys. I am actually packing right now as this video uploads so that we can hit the road for our video filming marathon ASAP.

Love that you say if you are starting out camping, that it's fine to sleep in your car. There is no right/correct way to camp. The main point is just getting out into nature and enjoying yourselves.

I work graveyard shift. My shift is 12 hours with 2 1-hour breaks. I sleep during my breaks. I bought an air mattress that fits in the back of my LR after months of just sleeping on the bare deck. Man. What a difference! I used it for the first time last night and it was great! Slept like a baby. Your vlog inspired me to step my game up. Thanks Steve!

Lots of great places to camp here on the island. Once you get away from the lower island (Nanaimo and southeast), the sky is the limit for places to camp. You do have to watch the logging roads as the potholes are deep, trucks flying down them from dawn to dusk and Mosaic has a habit of locking the entrance gates from time to time on their active roads.

Keep in mind, roof racks can have a big effect on fuel use. One of the biggest advantages of a new vehicle is the clean aero profile. Removing seats might be easier for you too, to add cargo space

For your cargo: What about one of the hitch racks with a box on it? Some hinge down so you can still open the hatch, but if you have it loaded, that may be heavy to do manually. Maybe you could make a rig to swing to the side instead?

Steve, you are in the same situation as I am with no roof rails on a new car. You can buy roof bars that fit with a standard 'smooth' roof which just clamp on with no drilling involved. You can even get 'soft' roof bars which strap through the car. All these would be about $100 from Amazon.

I did a comparison between the rave hybrid SUV and the Honda CRV touring edition. I have always been a Toyota fan. This time Honda had it hands down. Roomier, better finishes, and the seats fold flat! The 2021 Toyota RAV4 hybrid does not allow the seats to fold down flat. I had to go with the Honda and happy I did

Steve, I bought my RAV-4 a few years ago purposely so I could use it to sleep in on Boy Scout campouts. I have bad knees now, so I claim ‘old lady privilege’ and don’t have to crawl around in a tent. The only thing I don’t like is that there is no inside opening latch for the hatch, and I have to awkwardly climb out of one of the passenger doors to exit. But the best part is that I don’t have to tear down any personal gear to leave, I can just drive away. I once even left all of my clutter in the car for two months until I felt like putting it away, and then little by little.

Take the RAV4 to a body shop and they can install the nutserts into those rails for you. It won’t leak then.

I have a dodge journey (5 seater) and a dog. I found that having the grate on rear seats to keep dog in back doubles as a means of adding bed length. I also slide front seats forward. In addition, I stuffed bugscreen into the outside channel of rear windows. They have been in place for over a year, and never came loose. allows you to vent the vehicle in summer without mosquitos getting in. how/where do we donate?

Steve-. Those rail holes can be drilled by a good mechanic or machinist. They don't Have to be done at the factory. I don't see how there is anything structurally different that a factory would add. The proper drill and tap and you could add the rails into the existing channel's either buying from Toyota or maybe eBay

Never under estimate the power of VHB tape. I personally know people who have their solar panels mounted on the roof of their RVs with VHB tape. Just get the right kind. Also, hitch racks are great.

My last vehicule purchase I did the same test of sleeping possibility with the back seats down. And it was well that I did so, as last summer with some work cowlleeges we had a dayhike and then a cookout at the trailhead and somebody cracked out way too much booze (legal or tolerated at some trailhead cookouts-places here in Europe)... having driven alone and nobody else going my way to act as designated dr*** I adapted to the situation and did an SUV sleepout, for which I was ok with what I keep at all times in my SUV and with my day-pack for the day-hike. Tolerance for consuming booze at trailhead cookout does not translate into tolerance for driving 2 hours home all boozzed-upp. So I got to enjoy the view of the trailhead area at dawn and have some of my day-pack emergency coffee and food for breakfast warmed on my pocket-r and titanium 650ml cup--- not bad at all.

Congrats on the new ride. Also, they make “clamp on” style roof rails for that vehicle. No drilling required. E trailer and a few other sites should have them. Also, you could get a hitch carrier if you didn’t want the extra wind resistance, noise etc. of the roof rack. Don’t drill into the new ride!

Build an emergency fund 5. Save to invest , it's a proven way to get richer. Very important to financial success : )

I cover my food in a 1/4 inch layer of a 6 herb and spice mix every time. its the only way to eat! no salt though. half a jar of garlic minimum for that meal, could of gone whole jar

I work at a REI in Southern California, and my store could easily install a new rack system for ya Steve! There aren't any REIs in Canada, but if there is a MEC near where you live, I'm sure they can help you out! It may set you back about $1000 however. New roof rack systems are not cheap.

Hey Steve. For roof rails check out Yakima or Thule. They make custom attachments and rails for any make/model

I was going to suggest that. Some roof rails are detachable and don't install with holes in your roof.

They're a tad expensive, however other than the four feet that attach with no drilling you can reuse all the other parts on any car! There are bike, kayak, canoe, etc. attachments for the rails so you can carry all of your gear with you. Just remember to get the keyed alike locks!

Got some grilled cheese, hotdogs, and can chili to enjoy while hunkering down to watch your camping. I feel that I am of the opinion of many viewers that we watch for you and it doesn't matter how basic or elaborate the adventure is.

Instead of the roof basket, for a quick solution you could get a hitch mounted cargo carrier for your trailer hitch, use a fair size tote on the back so you can still get around or on top to access the back for gear and or bed space. Nice new ride guys! I hope you can find a roof rail and rack solution

Glad someone said this, was going to suggest it too. Worst case, he could also get a small utility trailer to pull behind, the only problem being it may limit where he can go if he really plans on taking it off pavement.

Northern Tool sells a nice aluminum rack for the back. Good size and doesn’t block brake lights.

We don't mind the regular car camp on campsite at all Steve. Especially with a nice beef stew that goes along with it! Looking forward to maybe a stealth camp in it? 😏😏😏
