Hi I’m Paul and I love the outdoors, especially wild camping in the UK
In this video I head out to the Long Mynd in Shropshire. I pitch my tent on a hill called Callow. it gets a bit windy but it was still a great little outdoor adventure.

Loved the longer format Paul. Would love to see perhaps a two nighter. Also loved the idea of gear hacks. An idea you mentioned about the powdered egg, would you consider a series where you prepare and cook your meals at home then dehydrate them yourself and then review them when you're on a wild camp? Keep up the good work you're smashing it! Can't wait to possibly bump into one day up the peaks haha

You can learn the easy way, or the hard way. I learnt the hard way. It's all very well to urge caution, but cooking that close to your flysheet can end badly, as it did for me in Knoydart some years back. It's astonishing how quickly a canister-top stove can transform itself into a gas-powered blowtorch that consumes your tent in seconds. That gizmo for your pot is called a trivet, by the way.

Back in the early 1990's for 3 years I used to camp most weekends and every holiday on the Long Mynd in all weathers to save the money the gliding club bunk house would have cost helping to pay my flying fees. I should have offered to test equipment because I was camping at least 100 nights a year and tents rarely lasted more than a year up on those hills. Your video brings back many happy memories of time spent in a tent on the gem that is the Long Mynd.

I like the longer videos personally, when it's relevant. I suppose a 50 minute video on your favourite hiking boots would feel excessive, but when there's content to be put in the video, I'd always say put it in. I mostly watch videos whilst I'm working, they play on the TV like a bit of background entertainment. I'll rewind or pause when required, but a longer video always feels better to me.

ahh. reminds me of when I had to bale from cold pike in howling rain and wind because the scarp became too dangerous to stay in. i found it to be a good shelter in the right conditions but in wind with no poles its so flappy, noisy and starts to fold in on you. No problems with condensation and the room inside is great but the lack of sleep from the flapping made me get another tent.

Good video Paul. I've had a Scarp 1 since 2009 and have had many Munro summit camps in Scotland including winter with winds up to 58 mph on Creag Meagaidh. I bought the Cross poles with the tent initially but found they were better in the snow and didn't make much difference in windy conditions. I changed the guys to 3mm dyneema to prevent slippage. Not sure if the updates to the Scarp over the years have slightly affected its ability in the wind but the older version I have is much more taught and less flappy in much stronger winds than you experienced . Hope you enjoy the Scarp 😊

I'm going to do a few mods with the guys and tie backs etc. If I can get away with not needing the cross poles I won't bother with them
@CraigCameron
@CraigCameron 2 года назад
@@PaulMessner sounds like a plan! I've made a few mods over the years but I've had the Scarp so long I've forgotten some of them 😊 I remember swapping the main pole for a 9mm Hilleberg equivalent a few years ago but I think the current version has a 9mm pole as standard anyway. It's an excellent tent and you'll be able to get it set up the way you like it. I never head out specifically to camp in wild conditions but sometimes the forecasts are very inaccurate and it's coped very well in very windy conditions on summits all over Scotland. I only take the cross poles if snow is forecast.

Longer is better! Camping should not be rushed! That is the reason why we do it! So we can slow ourselves down and feel the time go by as opposed to watching it fly by! Read that book, watch that movie, carve that spoon, have that afternoon nap, go on that hike and take those photos. Camping is all about slowing time down. Got a windburner and first thing I did was dig out a spare sock to put the gas canister and stove to stop it rattling. Other than that can’t fault it, the pot is 1l so is big enough for wet MREs and filling flasks for the 2nd day in winter. Had to ditch the measuring cup though as it kept getting stuck on the base
