They Cumbria Way is an epic route that travels through the Lake District National Park and beyond. It offers epic mountain scenery, serene lakeside paths, and remote, exposed trails. And yet this walk is certainly an accessible one, with easy navigation and plenty of amenities along the way.
In this video, join Abbie Barnes and their mum, Pearl, as they walk one of the most popular long distance trails in England; The Cumbria Way. Experience boggy paths, neck-high bracken, wind swept mountains, lakes, and quaint little villages.

Funny story that I walked the cumbria way with my grandad around 15 years ago and I remember us finishing in Carlisle and feeling flat about the last stretch. We assumed the finish was sort of forced at Carlisle for the transport links. What we didnt know at the time was that we walked past my the home of the lady who is now my wife and I've now lived in Carlisle for the last 5 years. Not actually related to the walk but just a big coincidence. It was when I first went to meet her that I recognised the street and the old gas store there.

Thank you again Abbie for giving us a wonderful,in depth, and funny video of these British Trails and this time in particular in what is probably the most beautiful area of England, the Lake District. Growing up in the UK I wasn't aware of the vast beauty that exists in England. Since moving overboard I have returned a few times to the Lake District(Aira force in the profile picture) and got to experience the lovely area of England that it is. Recently I have been looking into doing the Cumbria Way so that i can really take in the full beauty of the Lake District. I was worried that I didn't understand enough about the trail and that's where this video has really helped me. All I need now is a travel partner so if anyone knows of anyone planning this trip in the near or far future please contact me. Once again thank you Abbey!

I live close to the Cumbrian way. I often walk up to Lingay hut and love seeing the visitors book. It’s an neglected walk and it’s fantastic to see it brought to life on RU-vid. I am a Carlisle person really; the idea of walking miles to get to Carlisle is a scary prospect!

Regarding the supposed back o Skiddaw, to people like me it’s the front! The views over the Solway and Solway plain are fantastic. Criffle is the mountain on the Scot’s side. You can also see the Isle of Man, ‘on a good day’. I am a local. I honestly would say the last section is really nice! It’s not particularly ‘industrial’. It’s really a really nice river walk. You often see King fishers along that stretch, the people of Dalston can be a little snooty and I can see them looking down on the Denton Holme stretch of the river. Though I suspect they rarely walk that path as they tour round in their 4 x 4’s.

I really enjoyed this and agree with Mum as to the route. No point in walking flat fields and industrial scenery if you can achieve double the views.

Hi Abbie - thank you for posting such a detailed video of an enticing walk. I'm an inveterate walker living in the Yorkshire Dales and I am certainly tempted to take this one on. What a great diary and eye opener for those of us contemplating embracing this more or less classic walk. I do however have a number of questions, Can you be pestered to answer them for someone intent on following your footsteps? What kit did you use? Specifically your tent, food and outer wear choices for you and your Mum? Weight of packs? Day 1: "The field bits take up a lot of time"? Isn't this part of the trail? "The Harvey's? the Harvey's is fine"? I love Harvey's maps (the polyester printing process should be taken up by the OS) but you presumably you identified some limitations. Day 2: My impression from your film was of a lot of road walking. True? You got lost in the morning. What let you down - maps, guides, waymarkers? NT campsites - What does "expensive" mean? Love the fact that you went for the pub option! Couscous (even Ainsley's) does it at the right time, but only in extremis :-) Day 3: Stake Pass and beyond - proper walking! (Although the aggregated paths - a testament to their popularity - take a bit of the beauty away :-(. In the pm the walk looked easy to follow because of the aggregate. True? Cut off three hours of the route? Naughty, but nice! Your feet look just like mine do after a couple of days good walking - ouchy ouchy!! Day 4: Skiddaw - getting real! 4 seasons in one day :-) Seeing Scotland in the distance - what a fillip! I love all of those border views, they hold secrets somehow. Last week I skied in the French Alps (I know, I know - 1st time in 17 years though!) from where we could see Italy - can't explain it but it was magical too! That man made line... Day 5: ..."or north, even" :-). Welcome to our rain - happy to share! Soaked tent - had this happened earlier on the trail what would your strategy have been? (Very useful info). Sorry to learn about the back injuries (you) and feet (your Mum). Surprised about how much of a hassle the kissing gates proved. Good advice though. Oo-er - caught the bus for the last bit? Not purist but fully understood (especially given the disappointingly indistinct end to the trail (shame on you Cumbria Tourist Board) ! I'd love to understand the tips your Mum gave over coffee in Carlisle please. Also, an on-screen map would have helped to make it obvious what she was advising. Thanks! Robert

I've fond memories of the Cumbria Way, although after three attempts I have come to the conclusion that it is always raining in Ulverston after getting a soaking each time between there and Coniston. The last time I walked it (almost 10 years ago now), we started in Carlisle and walked south. In that respect the walk from Carlisle to Caldbeck served as a nice introduction to the route, and you don't suffer the anti-climax of it, the rest of the route being so good. We have unfinished business with High Pike too, our walk being in the tail end of a hurricane, we chose the low level route to Skiddaw. The central section is just awesome. We had a long day from Keswick to Elterwater and walked the last few miles in dusk alongside the river, the bats flitting around our heads. It was magical. Between Ulverston and Coniston it is so easy to wander from the path. The way marking is sparse, and any lapse in concentration means you can lose the path. Thanks so much for the video, it brought back great memories of a wonderful hike.

Hi Abbie. Just about watched all your vids. I am in awe of you . I can see lots of changes in your format. I love the talk in the tent. And you mention about where you eat l like that. In your recent vids you don’t mention where you eat. Or where you shower , and l like that you mention that in your older vids,, it makes it more real. You Mum is truly a treasure in your life. Treasure that... It can end very abruptly when you least expect it. Love you both. Dianne

Thanks for uploading this. I actually use clips of walking or cycling (or skiing) that are "long" for when I'm spinning at home, meaning I watched this with the sound off (so I could have "spinning" music on). However, I enjoyed the views so much that I watched it all again later, with the sound on. I must say it's better WITH the commentary! A nice sell of the Lake District, all in all. You even made Carlisle look nice, and I hate cities! Thank you.
