While I've been kicking this around for my 54" x 10' all-aluminum utility trailer, you've actually gone and done it. Nice to see your approach, which has some minor variations from my sketch-up. The tent I've selected is only a solo that fits in the "footprint" of the trailer, and the OEM side/front stake panels are removable, as the top will be as I need to use the trailer for other duties besides a camper set-up. Thanks for the run-through of your design.

I wanna do this with a pop-up camper frame: * Do an axle flip to eliminate the wheel wells & give you a flat surface to start with. * Build some sidewalls on hinges that fold down, and you approximately have a 10' x 10' platform to setup your tent on. * Expand his idea of table space in the back, by making the entire back wall fixed, with a fold-up countertop. The back of the trailer is now your cooking area that holds your chuck box & stove. * When the sidewalls are up, you've got an enclosed box for tons of storage for your coolers, stove, tent, camping chairs, tarps, and mountain bikes. * Your propane tank mount is already built into the popup frame. * Build a water-tight box somewhere to keep a deep cycle battery, and you've got usable power for your trip. * You could even build a set of mounts for tarp poles for a canopy. The possibilities are endless! You basically eliminate all the cheap, rushed, and shoddy installation work done by the pop-up manufactures, and keep all the benefits of being above ground. Plus, your overall gear load is lighter. It's MUCH less work setting up a tent on top of that than setting up a pop-up, and you get the same effect: Tent camping off the ground!

So I've been tent camping but trying to figure out what I want to do long term. Wife hates camping so I'm not going to invest in a bigger style camper, besides, that's not my idea of camping lol. Thought about building a smaller teardrop like camper, but I want to bring my fishing kayak which is also on a trailer, then I saw the rooftop tents and thought I could mount one above my kayak trailer... But the price, ugh, so then I thought why not put some plywood up and use a regular tent, even have a piece fold out to extend the surface. So I do a Google search and BOOM your video shows up basically doing what you did haha. Thanks for some great ideas!

@@RandomButtonPusher well i ended up biting the bullet and bought a rooftop tent. i found a soft top that setups like a hard top, very fast. mounted it on my small trailer. lady week i bought a 5x10 trailer and moving everything over to it to have more storage. heading off on a 14 day camping trip cross country hitting a few national parks and other sites. be a nice maiden voyage.

Now I’m fixing to up grade tent from smittyB 2 person and 4x6 to a smitty B xl and 6x12 trailer and and it will open on top of the trailer and keep everything on the trailer and have room under tent to sit chairs and tent annex:

This is a super sweet trailer. I saw it on a previous video and would have sworn it was a commercial manufactured model! I especially like that it looks secure enough to leave it at a campsite. I’ve had to be selective when choosing a camp for my Jumping Jack, for security purposes. The Jumping Jack sleeps four, but I’m gonna build one like yours for when I travel alone. Awesome, yet simple design! Kudos.
