I agree Jim. I might take it car camping but I do have better illumination lights. I might take in backpacking to use like a ECO candle lantern but I don't think I would use the included gas canister if I am carrying another gas stove with canister. Thanks for commenting

You have a point, but in an emergency situation the last thing you should be worried about is a random fine by park rangers. I carry two or three fire starting methods, and If I were to find myself in a desperate situation I would without a doubt make campfires to warm up, boil water and cook. though a lack of food is generally one of the least important things as most people have enough body fat to hike dozens of miles without eating. Water and temperature are far more important and cause most outdoor fatalities through hipothermia and dehidration.@@AirWaves77777

This kind of small canister would only be useful on dayhikes and such, where you wouldnt get far away anyways, so food is not a big concern. In fact for dayhikes i often leave all cookware behind and just bring premade meals.@@AirWaves77777

I missed making that point in the video. The website does say 15grams and the manual shows 35grams. I went with 35grams as the size and weight of the canister appeared to justify it. I would not think a 15gram tank would be of much value. Thanks for commenting

Butane is just 30psi~. it is pretty hard to make a canister to cheap it cannot handle it. all the little plastic lighters are using this gas. you can smash it on the ground and step on them with no problem.

The 15g is for the light colored canister smaller than this one. This is a bigger size and only black for 35g ones.

it certainly can be used in place of larger canisters; however, I am not sure the weight is worth it if you are counting grams. I discuss this toward the end of the video and have weights in the description. Hope this helps

soto makes a lantern with a platinum "mantle" but it's really expensive, about $150usd. it was sold with the brunton name for several years, i have one and have mixed feelings about it.... it produces more light than a simple flame, but the light is very orange, not even slightly white like a typical fabric mantle produces. it's also tricky to light, it has a fuel valve and an air valve and you have to fiddle with both of them to get it lit, then keep it lit, then get it to burn at maximum brightness.

I have a small mantle lamp I picked up at Value Village and a large propane lamp I use for car camping. Much brighter for sure but I carry extra mantles as they doo break fairly easily. Thanks for commenting Jim

i also use the "paint can" looking butane canister. they are very cheap and contain alot of fuel. i refill all my lighters and camping cartridge with them.

I did not run the lamp until it ran out but based on the fuel consumption as I measured it, it should last approximately 8 hours. However, the company says 4.5 hours. Hope this helps

it is meant for luxury car camping. have a look into Japanese camping style. you basically fill your car to the brim and make yourself a luxury camp spot. those lantern are used to make a old style ambience like oil lantern.

No air? The empty cartridge has air in it that has to be displaced to allow a full fill of butane. Thanks for commenting

@@MarkYoungBushcraft it is not air it is butane/mix gas. when you are filling it you are wanting to fill liquid butane back into the canister. the problem is that the hole between the two cartridge is extremely small (like 1mm). the pressure between the two cartridge is the exact same because they are both filled with the same gas and at the same temperature. so the liquid doesnt want to flow inside the lower canister because the vapour pressure of the liquid/gas is the same. it is like holding a water bottle with a very small hole up-side down. the water will not flow. in order to fill your can you are pressing the button or causing a change by other means, it cause a sudden drop of pressure inside and force the upper cartridge (that contain liquid butane/mix) to boil due to the drop of pressure. because of this there is a disturbance inside and it helps the liquid from the top can to rush into the bottom one. since the one at the bottom has the gas on top, and the top canister the liquid at the bottom you are filling the lower cartridge with liquid butane/mix. some systems like propane fill station use a different system to fill faster. for example having a special path inside the nozzle that allow a gaseous exchange between the canister and the filling station or even a pump to force the liquid fuel into the tank. they mostly use a return path for the gas to flow and allow the liquid to come in. you must understand, the liquid is just condensed fuel gas. the pressure is always the same with most gases like this. even thought the liquid fuel level is changing the pressure is the same. the liquid phase is just changing into gas phase to replace the dropping level of gas. *each gas have its own pressure* it is mostly constant and only varies with temperature. it is called "vapour pressure". butane for example is around 30psi @ 20c. propane on the other hand is 130psi. this is why you should *NEVER FILL PROPANE into a butane system*
