Are 1 ton axles worth it for your rig? Today my buddy Jim and I discuss his experience with Ultimate Dana 60s on his long arm Jeep Wrangler JKU. We talk about some of the benefits of 1 ton axles and why I chose UD60s for our Jeep Gladiator build.

Perfect timing! I am doing the ton swap in 2 weeks. It was an investment and a lot more than just axles goes into it, new wheels and tires, driveshafts, yokes, hydro, ect. I did it more for the unsprung weight and overall strength as I am the only one on 40s now in the group I ride with, But after breaking an axle shaft on my built 44/37s, I decided to do the upgrade. Looking forward to seeing where this goes and its been fun to follow your progression over the years

Jim is great. He sent me some videos he did showing me how he ran his Ebrake lines for the rear. Helpful when I installed my UD60s, hopefully you can touch on that in your build!

#3 - You'll need them anyway when you inevitably drop a 392 into your Gladiator because the 3.6L is ... well, it's an engine. I guess. :)

Jeep needs to release a base 5.7 basic V8 with Dana 60s on the Gladiator. Keep it at or below the price of a 392 and it will sell

Hey man! I heard good things about Dana and I liked that they are the factory axle manufacturer for Jeep. Northridge was also running a crazy sale on the rear UD60 so that played a factor as well. I considered Dynatrac, Teraflex and Currie as well - all seem to be great options!

I run UD60’s and the only upgrade I did was Yukon locking hubs. The warn are ok but the Yukons lock if they fail.

It all depends on what you’re doing with your rig. I know guys on 40s with Dana 44s because they only do snow runs. A Dana 60 or 80 and everything that goes into powering those axles just makes you heavier. Plus you don’t break parts nearly as much when running on slippery snow vs bouncing on dry rock. So each has its purpose but to say “everyone wishes they had gone 60s earlier” is an oversimplification of a divers case use. Some people out there actually use their jeeps as daily drivers!?!? Imagine that!

Get JL with a 3.6 and an 8 speed. Turns 38s like nothing with 4.88 gears cruising down at 85mph is no issue.

Are you worried about over heating engine/transmission while towing on 60s and 40s?

Not much, no. 5:38 gears should put it back closer to factory ratios and our camper is well below the max rating for the gladiator. all that said the 3.6 will definitely be earning its keep when we are towing 😆 steep inclines will definitely be a struggle.

Do u really need that if u don’t do those extremely trails. I normally just go off road like see some pot holes maybe some big rocks. But rarely do I need to climb over logs or steep slopes. I love the lifted looks of the wranglers. Can I still run 35+ (under 40s) without swapping the axles and regearing? Very new to this. Pls help ty

No you don't need 1 tons. I've ran 37s on the stock rubicon axle housings for nearly 7 years just fine. Things that I have done are chromoly axle shafts(some people just run the stock axle shafts on the rubicon axle because you can get them EXTREMELY cheap and go through 10 sets over 5 years before the cost of a set of chromoly axle shafts). That said, some may not be comfortable doing a trail repair or want to do one choice is yours. Get yourself a good set of ball joints(dynatrac, metalcloak, etc) and regear appropriately for your build. I have 5.13 gears but I'm not heavy on the skinny pedal, a more common gearing is 4.88. You do NOT need 1 tons for general driving or mild trails, hell I have done just about every major trail up and down the west coast without breaking my axle, or any of the components on there. It took me 9 years to upgrade my axle and i even sold my old axle housing because it was in great shape and recouped cost. In short, if you take care of your stuff, don't drive like a hot head and smash those rocks with the skinny pedal - you will be amazed how long your stock stuff will last and how far you can push it. Determine your goals before dropping 5k+ on a new axle that you might not need. Don't get distracted by youtube builds, sema builds or what the other guys are doing.

Build for your goals - put that money saved to have more adventures. Once your goals are beyond your current equipment expand from there. Be safe out there!

Love seeing the build progress. I'm also in the process of doing 1 tons and 40s on my 2015 JKU. I would love to compare pricing on your pre-built axles vs my junkyard ones. As of right now, I'm in at about 23-24K for the whole project including 5 tires.

That’s an interesting comparison for sure. I’m around 20k for the two crate axles and 5 wheels / tires. That’s not including suspension or steering.

I would swap your axle side track bar mount, it’s a notorious failure point.

On D30s and D44s for sure. The braketry on the UD60s is quite beefy. I did reinforce the frame side track bar bracket though 🤙🏼 thanks for the comment

I’ve heard terrific things about the pro rock! I think the pro rock has slightly better clearance which is a big pro. I think the only real advantage to Dana is the parts are readily available since it s basically the axle from a Ram 3500.

Hey did you run into any rear abs sensor issues? I cant get rid of service 4wd, ESC & ABS. Code Scanner shows implausible signal at the rear sensors. Tazer Mini did not help

I’ve heard good things about Currie! I would say you can’t go wrong either way but I don’t have first hand experience with Currie axles. The company is solid though.
