17:01 Mechanical Engineer here - Gaunson was really close to what actually happened! It's not that the tip was going slower, it was that it was essentially a hinge point for the deceleration brought about by meeting the safe. So as soon as the deceleration begun, it exerts MASSIVE force that creates a moment load (bending force) along the entire dart. It is a bending load since the object is being forced to change angular momentum and spin, but of course, the rest of the dart has WAY more momentum so only the tip broke and spun off. Where it broke is called a "stress concentration" because that is where there is abrupt change in geometry and also it was thin at that portion. Hope that helps!

Hey, just a note if you guys get something that large stuck in the mud again.... snow chains work great in that circumstance to help get more traction. They aren't the be-all, end-all but they are very helpful.

If they are going to drop a large dart from high altitude they should keep in mind the J-Curve effect of high energy penetrators. That and fragmentation of the penetrator. Instead of simply travelling downward they can be turned and travel sideways , even emerge from the ground, a considerable distance away from point of entry. Depends on subsurface composition, velocity, shape, angle of entry. Can doesn't mean will, mostly won't but they should keep at least half the impact velocity distant

I honestly love the fact that they always give the rest of the team some attention in videos as well, instead of all the focus being on the main 3 boys. My 4 y.o son and I love watching you guys! After reading the comments the safe v safe thing is a cool idea, but as far as what you can “make out of thin air,” I think it’s time for Rexy’s Revenge! He’s been pushed around, smashed, and torn apart long enough, now you should give him his redemption…. A GIGANTANORMOUS METAL REXY! As big and heavy as you can make him out of a hardened steel. Use a crane at a port or boat dock to lift him and crush the safe. “Rexy’s Revenge” would make a cool addition to the clothing line too! Either way, love what you guys do! -Everhett and Daddy

I think that removing the "grip" part and keeping it as a long shaft like the old darts would make it able to penetrate things way easier. Also then the force would go through the entire dart instead of being concentrated at the tip (maybe?).

For Richard's big safe, build a beefy, 4 meter throwing star or saw blade. Small fins or wings could be added at each blade segment or tooth to get it spinning on the way down from the crane.

For dropping from the helicopter, i dont think the tip matters with how narrow it is, since the resistance will be the earth having to compress and move out of the way of the thicker dart body, sincebits basically a giant hammer with fins But if youre doing other videos with the dart before the helo drop, the tip is a fun addition

The correct term for what the dart did to the log is split. Chop is when you're cutting for example a tree down and you hit it multiple times in different areas to carve into the wood. I'm not sure if I was clear in my attempt of explaining. English isnt my first language. Anyway, there are even different types of axes with specific characteristics that favors one or the other, splitting axes and and chopping axes.

Making the dart spin-stabilized would produce better results. 1. Accuracy would be substantially improved. 2. The tip would impact much closer to vertical, decreasing the damaging lateral forces on the dart and especially the tip. 3. Much more of the force would be transferred from the tip to the target. 4. It would look cooler to see it fly.

Getting bogged is why I always recommend having rugs in your car, you can usually use them to help you get out by placing them in front on the tires to help them grip something other than the dirt so they don't dig deeper.

When you drop the dart from the helicopter attach a 5 meter rope to the anchor point. Secure the other end to the hook on the helicopter with a zip tie. Tape the rest of the rope along the shaft of the dart. When the dart is dropped the rope pulls free from the masking tape, stretches out 5 meters and breaks free from the hook. Mark it every 33.3 cm like a tape measure. This will allow you to determine the depth of the dart from its anchor point. Good luck with the drop. The fins will probably a meter below the ground level.

So, speaking from experience with the tilting problem, your best bet to avoid that would be to put a bit of tilt on the fins. Even just getting some bend at the tail end of the fins in the same direction each would impoart rotation on the dart, which would keep its alignment a lot more consistent. Back in high school, I did an "egg drop" device, which was effectively two paper airplanes glued together, creating a long pyramidal channel down the middle that the egg rested in. To stop it from tipping onto its side, I put some little parachute drogues at the back, with notches cut into them to encourage it to spin, and the resulting drop was the single most elegant and graceful drop of the day XD

I think you should either get another large safe to fight the safe, or do what you've been dreaming about. That is right, as big of a Rexy you can make out of solid metal. Make sure it's good as an outdoor sculpture to put outside the tower or your office, but a huge solid Rexy to fight everything.
