Can a corridor be a studio? | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Having a dedicated studio space is a luxury most portrait photographers don’t have but how much room do you actually need? For example, is it possible to take studio-quality portraits in a random corridor no wider than a doorway?
That's the challenge portrait photographer Gavin Hoey sets himself when he swaps his small home studio for the adjoining tiny corridor. At just 43 inches wide (or 1.1 meters) there’s no room for a normal studio background so Gavin improvises and creates three very different looks from high key to dramatically dark and finally a hyper-colorful graphic look.
The lack of space also means Gavin can’t fit a softbox in the small space, so he creates super soft light by making good use of the white walls. He also embraces hard light for some moody images and uses an optical projector to create a circle of light. Gavin's choice of light switches between the power of a single Flashpoint XPLOR 300 flash and the convenience of a Nanlite LED for an amazingly colorful finale.

Wow! thank you, Gavin. You (and Sam and Katie) not only knocked this shoot out of the park, you made me appreciate my own small home studio, which is quite a bit smaller than yours but bigger than the hallway. So, no more excuses or complaints about space... Just set a light, get a model in, and get it done! 🤩

Gavin's videos are some of my favorite photography content on RU-vid. I just take pictures of what I see around me, but these videos make me want to try more creative photography. There's something very cool about the process of creating a subject and setting as opposed to just looking for things to photograph.

@zedbleu4444
@zedbleu4444 Год назад
Hello Gavin, As always a very instructive video! I'm wondering about a technique you use at 2:05 in the video. You bounce the flash not directly on the ceiling above but with some 45degrees angle. But we don't see the walls where it bounces. Ceiling is white, both sides are white too. Since you shoot at that angle, the back wall (where I stand as a viewer of the video), is it white? closed, a door, ? Would it work if there was no back wall, but just the white ceiling and sides (say, in a long corridor)? How the 45degree works to result in no shadows at all? Thank you sir and please continue to create such cool videos!

Cool - due to the small space I shoot from at my apartment home studio I often find myself shooting my speedlites into the ceiling for a convenient and bigger softbox than i could physically fit - doing this i sometimes onl need to use 2 lights for fashion type shots and some portraits

Hey Gavin, not sure if you’ve made a video in this but I have 2 strobe lights in an average basement room. Wondering what a good set up would be to take high key photos of people including full body. 1 light on the background 1 on subject? Or 2 lights in front of the subject? It’s not a lot of space from the subject to the white paper. 2-3 feet background to subject. Camera 5-8 feet from subject. Thanks! Great video very inspiring and problem solving! More high key videos!
