I love low output pickups for metal. Lots of clarity and definition. Just let the amp do the heavy lifting! I am pretty heavy handing on my metal picking tho. I like to have an aggressive right hand attack.

The metal bands from the 80's were using low to medium output humbuckers for that old-school crunchy metal tone and they sounded great. Nowadays, there exist humbuckers which have more low-end but lack clarity & midranges.

I think you can do metal with any guitar as long as it has decent pickups. With all the plugins and pedals available you can play just about any genre with any guitar. I've been using jazzmaster and fender pick ups for metal almost exclusively.

Wow, so Fender finally Jacksonized/Charvelized this new series! It looks amazing! Personally, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with low output pickups. It’s just that Fender has yer to make really good humbucker pickups. I had an idea you’d have an issue with that humbucker and I was right because of having issues with Fender’s humbuckers for YEARS (try the earlier John5 Signature with the paddle headstock, that Enforcer bridge pickup absolutely SUCKS). I am going to get this guitar and have an SD Custom Custom Trembucker swapped for that bridge humbucker. Thanks for the demo! 🤘🏾🤘🏾

I would be interested to see what kind of potentiometers it uses. Most strats, even HSS have 250k pots which makes the guitar sound quacky in distortion which is why even most HSS can’t do metal. Even after a pickup swap. If it has 250k pots, switch them to 500k and it will solve most of the problem. But i imagine that hummer is pretty low output.
@spudvader
@spudvader 2 года назад
Most metal guitar have 500k pots because they come with humbuckers. When you use 500k pot it allows more high end come through. The opposite is used for single coils, use 250k pots to tame the high end. They put 250k pots in HSS Fender is because they are predominantly a brighter sounding brand, so they keep there single coils sounding like single coils and they can wind a brighter humbucker to match
@IndependenceGuitar
@IndependenceGuitar 2 года назад
@@spudvader well not exactly. There’s much more to it than that, “brighter” doesn’t describe the relationship between 250k pots and 500k. If you’ve ever played a fender HSS or squier hss, you will notice the humbucker still sounds closer to a single coil than it does a high output humbucker in an ibanez or jackson. They a have a quacky sounding quality that is the staple of fender guitars. That is solely due to the 250k pots. If you wanted a fender to do metal, 500k pots are pretty essential. For example, if you took the most scooped, hottest, muddiest sounding pickup, like a Duncan invader, and put it directly into a strat, the guitar will still retain the quacky strat sound, just with a dirtier pickup. Potentiometers are the reason for that. They don’t just control the “brightness” of a guitar, but have completely different frequency qualities. On the other hand, 500k pots will give more low end and mids to a single coil, actually warming it up and making it sound fuller, which is bad if you want the quacky strat sound. I know a lot of people on the internet always associate 500k pots as being “brighter”, but that’s only a small fraction of the truth. Potentiometers have the most direct effect on your guitars tonal quality, in some cases even more than the pickup itself.
@meetloaf5334
@meetloaf5334 2 года назад
@@spudvader Independence is right. I bought new pots for my jackson, and accidentally ordered 250k push pull tone pot instead of a 500k. Put it in, and the guitar suddenly got that twang like a fender. I thought it was the pickups, turns out it was the tone pot. Once I put the 500k pot in, it went to sounding brutal. The pot didn’t make guitar brighter, it sounded fatter and even warmer with the 500k
@spudvader
@spudvader 2 года назад
@@meetloaf5334 A pot is a variable resistor, a 500k pot lets through more high end frequencies than a 250k pot. It's not my opinion, it's a fact. If you had a DPDT switch aka a push-pull pot, I'm assuming that you have a splittable pickup so there other reasons you had your experience.
@spudvader
@spudvader 2 года назад
@@IndependenceGuitar I'm going to ignore that you said a pot has more effect on an electric guitar than the pickups because that is just plain retarded. As for a pot, you are preaching information that isn't true. A pot or potentiometer is a variable resistor. Straight from Fralin pickups website - " The pot itself dampens high frequencies from your pickups’ signal. It does this by adding a short across your pickup’s signal. Lower resistance pots, like 250K, will dampen more high frequencies off of your signal than a 500K pot will. If you were to connect your pickups directly to the output jack, you would notice your tone is louder and brighter. Most instrument manufacturers pick the pot value that makes the instrument sound the best. " I think they know more about guitar electronics than yourself and myself for that matter. You are arguing against science, you are more than welcome to think what you want but you aren't correct.

What attracts me most is the flatter radius past the 12th fret. I can never get the action quite low enough on traditional strats. Of course, I’d have to play one before I could ever drop that amount of money though. The SSS model is what I’d go with 👀

Glad I finished the video before commenting. I'm not normally to picky of the EQ range of pickups since a bit of EQ adjustment on the amp can often fix it, but I noticed right away the treble seemed a bit much and kind of shrill. Now that I heard you say you really had to play it hard to get it to sound right I agree that's the issue. Heavy handed players tend to force out more treble when they play so you having to play harder likely pushed the treble higher than it actual is. As always great video Ray.

To me stainless steel frets are essential in a brand new guitar! Love it! Have refretted and pleked all my vintage strats and they now play better than ever! No any sound difference, lifetime durability, never need to be repolished, better sustain and glassy feel when bending strings. Oh and less string wear too! (Less friction, no oxydation points) And little bonus, no zinc/copper alloy inducing cancer.

How is it for classic rock like vintage Aerosmith, Ozzy, Zeppelin, Judas Priest and like 80' hair band stuff? Also, I am trying to decide between the Mythic Black and the Silver Burst love both for different reason. One thing is the maple neck's fretboard smooth or does it have grain like the rosewood? The one thing is the mythic black has a silver pick guard which looks real nice against that black but the black has speckles which is great but also makes it look dirty from certain angles. The silver burst looks like it has a flat black and then the silver burst design is that the case?

Great video and great demo. I have a 2007 American Deluxe ( the previous generation of your demo guitar) and it had the exact same problem with the pickups. It was a combination of those SCN Noiseless pickups and that awful S1 switch. It made the output tone so bland and lifeless sounding. Got rid of the whole shebang and installed a Duncan Distortion in the bridge, a lil 59 mini humbucker in the middle and a hot rails in the neck. Now she is a metal beast.

With a Set of nazguls or Black Winters Fenders can become a metal godzilla. Will they be as playable like an esp or an ibanez. No. But that comes with muscle memory and how well of an extension Your weapon of choice becomes. Will they sound better in the Mix? . That Fender when modified Tone it Produces is second to none..my humble opinion. I cant help it im a fender junkie and everytime i go to switch to a more death Black metal oriented Brand of shovel i always go and buy another Fender to modify😅 On the other hand cubase and Few amp and distortion plugins can turn any guitar to anything really😊
