Join the science discord! / discord After struggling with my mega-microwave I decided to have some fun. I got 4 gallons of bulk glue for mouse traps because I was curious if a person could escape from a human-sized glue trap.
I never saw anybody try it before so I was curious. At first I thought about getting a few hundred of the regular sized glue traps from the store and stapling them to the plywood but decided the bulk glue would be more economical and cover more surface area. It was not a cool color like the stuff in the store but I don't mind.

All the glue traps I’ve seen use strong paper as the base instead of something more solid so I imagine that it would be a lot harder to get out of it if it was flexible since it would be pulled up whenever you try and pull yourself out of the glue trap

I think the thickness of glue to body size ratio should be perserved to really test it. Like you should use a couple inches thick of glue, if you really want to feel like a fly stuck in sticky paper

Well actually, the lizard has an amazing chemical interaction going on between it's hair like structures and surfaces. It does not rely on friction, or hydrophilic bonds to "stick". So oil shouldn't affect it much

This is why you shouldn't use these unless they're indoors. Bats see the bugs stuck on these and try to eat them. Then they get painfully stuck and starve. It can take several minutes for a wildlife rehabilitator to get them unstuck, and they always have raw patches of skin where the fur got stuck and ripped off. Sometimes if the bats get too scared, they may thrash and break their wings.

I would think for a human, the glue needs to be much stronger. A human has more strength to pull away than a rat does. Then there's the hair/fur. We all know the pain of plasters stuck to hairs, It would be painful to pull away. However after a while you'd pull so hard you'd rip of skin or want to gnaw a stuck limb off, like the rats do. (reason I don't like glue traps)

No that’s just rude. What you do is place this on a solid board. When they are asleep flip then on to this, add a cheep bed cover. Then wall / door mount this and see their reaction in the morning.

Thanks for rescuing the lizard! When I do yard work, especially with motorized equipment, I accidentally injure, maim, or kill small creatures and I become quite sad. I try to walk around the yard to scare creatures away before I do work but with so many tiny creatures it's impossible to avoid killing some when my equipment and I are approximately 1000x their size. Still, good on you for trying to help the accidental victim of the glue, those Anole lizards are everywhere in the tropics.

Par Ty we amount to nothing on the grand scale of the universe, but to a organism, other organisms of the same species or in some cases different species (pets) amount to alot because they hold significance. That lizard amounts to nothing to a lot of humans, and on the grand scale of things the lizard is smaller and less intelligent than a human, so it amounts to less, as it takes less resources to create and sustain it. So in conclusion, humans rule lizards drool.

Well "stickiness" is proportional to the size of what is being stuck so you're going to need something even more sticky and viscous to truly simulate the "mouse in glue-trap experience" at a human scale.

The fact that you're a substrate is stiff is also a bit of a factor. Because the typical mouse glue trap is made of relatively thin cardboard and a mouse can't get any leverage against it. Plus they have much smaller limbs.

BTW, glue traps are incredibly inhumane. If the mouse does get out of it, their fur would be matted/ torn out. If they get stuck, they will starve/ dehydrate to death unless the trapper mercy kills it.

Yeah had mice in our house as a kid. We set up 1 glue trap and never again would I do that poor thing was screaming stuck to the glue couldn't figure out how to free him so ended up backing over him wrapped up in a bad with a car. Terrible days
