Just went through this same exact scenario with mine, finally I couldn't stand the light tapping when warm.. so I tore into it and put in new very slightly longer push rods. Tap is gone. Glad you got her fixed
Still appreciate that fly wheel. And I know my Jeep does. It’s still ticking along strong. Wish I could figure my oil pressure issue out and I’d be solid. Love the videos and advice. Keep it up.
🤣🤣🤣 Brother I always think of the scene in the Blues Brothers when they’re in the elevator going to pay the property taxes for the Penguin with your music choice. 👌
Remember Dex that Jeep and Chrysler cooling systems are Partial Pressure cooling systems. That little valve at the very bottom of the radiator cap should not be spring loaded. They are designed to stay open till it gets steam and the pressure shunts that little valve closed and the system builds pressure quickly to stop the coolant from boiling. Chrysler been doing this since the 1950’s . Designed to make gaskets and hose’s, radiators live a little longer. To test the valve I dump the coolant from the radiator from the drain cock with the radiator cap on and watch the overflow bottle level go down as the system radiator level drops. This also provides an indication that there is no air leaks between the radiator and the straw into the overflow bottle.
I built a 4.6l stroker back in '07 and put it in my 96 2dr 2wd ax15 se. I used the stage 3 mopar cam and put 20+hrs into porting and polishing the head. I did away with the mech fan and had a 2nd 97-01 efan. The other upgrade was a wj 4.7l 68-65mm tb with a readily available adapter plate. I would autocross it and be in the top-half of the field. I went through 3 auburn lsds before I ponied up for the eaton true-trac. I now have a 99 2dr 4wd se with a ng3500, np242, and the same eaton waiting for me to refresh the 4.6.
I had a similar situation with roller rockers but it happened to me only when revving high, what I did to solve it was to change the valve springs to stiffer ones, hope this info helps too
THANK YOU DEX FOR PUTTING THIS VIDEO OUT NOW ITS GIVENG ME SOME ENTERTAINMENT WHILE RIDING OUT THIS "HURRICANE" DOWN HERE IN FORT MYERS FLORIDA. IVE GOT NO POWER ABOUT TO GO START THE GENERATOR WHILE EVERYTHING IS FLOODING GOOD TIMES HERE IN FLORIDA WHEN A HURRICANE HITS LOL. I STILL GOT THE 2 98 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEES FOR SALE MIGHT HAVE SOM SLIGHT WATTER DAMAGE NOW LMAO 😂 JUST KIDDING WATER ISNT THAT HIGH YET. ALSO THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME A TOP FAN ON FB. SAY A LITTLE PRAYER FOR ME AND MY FAMILY DOWN HERE IN FLORIDA ITS FILLING UP WITH WATER QUICK 😅
I built a stroker from junkyard parts back 15 yrs ago and it was awesome never could suck it up to punch it out but I can imagine the power increases on the punch out...
Looking forward to your thoughts on the stroker vs turbo. I'm on the fence myself. Leaning towards turbo based on cost and the fact most good engine machinists have disappeared in my area.
indeed. coolant absolutely need pressure to not BOIL. esp at the valve portion of the head. hottest Internal area... pressure raises boil point significantly
ALSO I LIKE THAT XJ IN THE BACK GROUND I ALSO HAVE A 98 XJ CLASSIC SAME COLOR COMPLETELY STOCK THE ORIGINAL OWNERS TOWED IT BEHIND THERE CAMPER. I LOVE IT ALONG WITH ALL MY OTHER CHEROKEES LOL
The 4.0 relies on swirl combustion and is the reason engineers chose single hole injectors, double head engines relying on tumble combustion which isn’t as efficient so they use 4 hole injectors to make up for it
Man i cant wait to get my stroker project going 😁Id like to do this "5.0" swap, I drive my LJ 82 miles a day so if im already wasting gas i may as well have something a bit faster and cooler XD cause my jeep is cammed ported head/intake etc. but the engine is essentially stock.....but i just want&need that extra displacement 😉 and the chop in that cam too
Was wondering if you have the valve cover spacer that lifts the valve cover when adding the all thebafter market stuff on the top end ... I've seen this being an issue before ..I dunno, check that valve cover underneath. Make sure nothing is even close to hitting. I'll go back and watch your videos and throw my two sense in but otherwise hope you figure it out..
My question though is the 4.9 strokers ive seen do not outperform the 5.9l even stock so whats the point of this ? just curious is all.. not even mentioned a built 360... so does the 4.9L stroker retain the 4.0s reliability or no ? pressure caps are needed on all motors lol. My AMC 360 in my J10 will boil the F out of the liquid when the seal on the cap was bad.. i had to bend the brass on the radiator back into place to make it get pressure retention from metal fatique.. with just a small leak in pressure the engine would boil considerablly, and i saw temps on the block near 400f while coolant temps were only 200
alot of guys are scared to put really big cams in these things like his cam isnt even that big honestly it might be .480/500 maybe for example mines 589/607 or something like that and the head work does alot for them to if the guy knows what they are doing. But id check put newcomerracing if you wanna see what these things are able to truly do
Dex, my 4.0 in my 99 WJ just started the valve tapping at 225k. Want to keep it alive as long as I can. Want to do lifters, pushrods and roller rockers. What do you suggest? Can the lifters be changed without pulling the head?
I did oil change this morning. No metal or fragments. Tapping comes and goes. I’ll pull valve cover first as it sounds at the top of the engine and not bottom. I am really good with my Jeep and have built it myself since 2018. Regular Maintenance on time. Hoping not lower end
Dex what ECM do you run with that? (Sorry if you covered this in an earlier video, I haven't watched them... YET) edit: I should have said, what ECM do you plan to use with it?
On old engines, like first overhead valves, they would lay a piece of felt about 3/4 of an inch thick over the rockers to quiet the noise. I personally would not want that inside my engine!
A person might think this is crazy but I remove the ethanol out of my gas by adding an ounce of water per gallon then once it settles I drain out 5 oz of the ethanol and water mix leaving pure gas. Cuz as we know alcohol attracts water and vice versa.
The first minute and a half of this video was you telling me what you're not going to do. So let me tell you that I'm not going to watch the rest of this video. Next time take the time to explain to people that's never been here before. What the hell's going on.
There's no such thing as a stroker the only reason people use that word is because they think it sounds cool, all you have actually done is build an amount of displacement. You start with a platform and finish with Cid or liter... to say I destroked or stroked an engine is just plain stupid. Let's start using our head's and stop sounding like total idiots
