Can a Steel Framed Bike hack it on a Fast Group Ride? 

I was watching and thinking the guy in front of you had a Bianchi Pinella too. I finally caught on. Lol. These senior moments....oy, veh.

You are rock solid on the bike. That is an art in of itself. No distractions, no wobbling in your lane

Regardless of whether it is steel or carbon, that's a pretty hot pace for a bunch of Saturday AM riders! It is great to see that there is such an active, diverse cycling scene in Florida, and that many are older riders who are in great shape! Sure beats golf!

That's a solid group-it's nice when the culture is there for rides like this. 5 elements I see for maximizing speed and being able to hang in a group ride with a given physical capacity in this order: 1) Pack riding/drafting ability (which can be enhanced by being able to trust riders around you) 2) Body position 3) Tires-quality at proper pressure 4) Wheels (some seriously deep section wheels in this group-mustn't be that windy near Miami) 5) Frame 5.5) Bright colors are faster than all matte monochrome- Benotto cellotape that one guy had on his bars really pops. Looking forward to the weather breaking at my latitiude to enjoy the open roads more like you all are doing.

Luis your Bianchi is still one of my favorites in your collection of bikes. Glad to see it your videos putting hard miles on it in amongst all those carbons, discs and e-shifters.

This was very enjoyable, I was watching the cadences of the different riders. I would like to see more like this with some commentary. Safety would be my concern at those speeds, and some of the riders were getting close, with fist bumps. I would be nervous to go that fast and close. Be interesting to hear your thoughts along with the footage, of what is happening.

Man everyone has some expensive bikes on that ride. The cheapest one I saw was the allez and at the end a giant. Everyone rolling in sworks, Pinos and bmc.

Unless it’s a hilly area, I think the frame material doesn’t matter that much. Even on a hill climb, gear ratio would be much more important.

I own a chromolly bicycle and i can keep up with other riders in my area. An i do enjoy riding when it is a nicer day or weather.

I am fairly new 26 yr old cyclist who rides with a group of 50+ year olds avg about the same, 22mph over 44 miles. It is tough for me, but i have yet to get dropped. Its the best ride i do! Would love to join this one too.

Once upon a time, the steel bike was the only option for a fast group ride. I'd suggest though the engine is more important than the machine.

I been doing some faster rides on my steel gravel bike, no one is dropping me and Im not dropping anyone because of the bike. Although the bike is 3 pounds heavier then my carbon bike at most recreational levels although we would like to think it matters but its very marginal IMHO.

Fads come and go CLASS IS FOREVER, I too ride a mechanical shifting rim brake steel frame lug CLASSIC which is CLASS PERSONIFIED. Keep riding that bike and let the posers pose!

That first guy in the vid could get the equivalent of $20000 in "bike weight loss" benefit by losing that GUT! ; ) I dunno, I've always been of the thinking that the bike doesn't really matter as much as too many people make it out to be. "Good enough" is not that hard to attain in a bike, and then it comes down to what the rider can do. Anyone agree?

STEEL IS REAL. Many noobs will think the latest bike tech will make them go faster. Having 12 speed groupset with 32-34 cassette they'll think is innovation. What they dont't know is that all this big cog on your bike is to covered the bad ride quality in modern days bikes. A good bike, with 27-28 cog you'll feel you having 30-32 cog in your bike.

It would be helpful to show a unit conversion to KMs for all the non American people

It's flat AF what does bike weight matter? It could be 32lbs.

Your ride looked good Luis, a lot of gaps but I think that is because you can't possibly know the abilities in a group that large and some safety distances is needed. Looked like there were a lot of speed differentials going on too which I don't like in a pack ride or people splitting lines, ie riding between two lines of riders. Way to risky. At those speeds, ave 19mph, the frame isn't really gonna make that much difference and it being a flat course I would have expected a much higher speed with all that carbon areo-ness that was about. The route was pan flat, so to be fair to your frame and set up it would definitely hold its own against that bunch with rolling terrain. Nice riding on your part sir. Some of the bunch were huge guys... Zwift CAT B 350-400w ftp monsters on that ride.
