Probably about as well as they can spot them using Cliff Notes, Wikipedia, or copying Little Timmy's homework

If they're alert, yes. Everyone has a distinct writing style - an AI can't be tailored to match the way you normally write. So, sure, you'll notice when someone's words are different to their usual 'voice'.
@Omni0404
@Omni0404 Год назад
So your argument was "he wasn't being alert?" You just watched a video of their own teacher not being able to tell a difference even when he was prepped and warned for this exact situation. The truth is the only chance we have is fighting AI with AI by copy / pasting the work into detection software.
@Waffle4569
@Waffle4569 Год назад
Actually AI can be tailored to match the way you write, we've already seen it with art where AI can match a specific art style given just a few sample images. Its absolutely possible in the near future that you'd be able to feed an AI samples of your writing, and it will attempt to match your style.

you can, by telling them writing style, like writing like 13 yrs old casually essay with occasionally wrong grammar. you can also edit some of its yourself to sprinkled the uniquity.

These days I'd guess that a teacher would be gratified to see their students use any kind of intelligence.

ChatGPT suffers from multiple limitations. OpenAI acknowledged that ChatGPT "sometimes writes plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers". This behavior is common to large language models and is called artificial intelligence hallucination. The reward model of ChatGPT, designed around human oversight, can be over-optimized and thus hinder performance, otherwise known as Goodhart's law.

I don't understand how the teacher tried to detect AI, but if anything, "a little different style" indicates a human writer. No mention of him using any detector tools but glad they mentioned this at the end. This is going to change not only education, but also professional work at all levels.
@Waffle4569
@Waffle4569 Год назад
The detector tools run a high risk of falsely accusing innocent people, I find the idea of a period of AI witch-hunting far scarier than AI itself.

We're already seeing AI being used to vastly multiply phishing attempts and malware generation. Can't speak for anyone else's IT departments, but our gurus are losing their minds at the sheer volume and variety of phishing, brute force hits, and password breaches happening in just the last few months. Because of course the first thing AI gets used for is making life easier for bad people doing bad.

And that exactly what they will do! Claim it was their own. It's about character, learning and cheating NOT about learning new technologies. Students who do claim it was their own are only cheating themselves out of learning.

I don't think it's necessarily bad to use it, just bad to use it for the entirety of writing. I like using it to bounce off ideas then writing out papers myself.

First of All: “A Teacher” is not a Real Teacher and “A Teacher” is definitely not Teachers in General, so: It’s like asking if a Person can be Michael Jordan and a Person can be Michael Jordan, but: How many People can be Michael Jordan? I can think of Two, but: That’s about It…

It's pretty obvious when someone turns in something far beyond their normal level of work. Phones should not be allowed in classrooms, they should be put in a box when student enters and then given back after class.

Im gonna go totally the opposite direction and say that a phone or equivalent device should be mandatory. If a student doesn't already have one, they should be provided. I have learned wayyy more through self-directed learning through AI than I ever did in a classroom I would say that there should be a way to minimize non-learning activities during class time, though.
