Can An E Bike Make You Fast Enough To Train With A Pro Cyclist?

E-Bikes are great to make cycling more accessible to those of us who aren’t as fast as our friends. But can we take that one step further? Can a mere mortal ride with an actual pro cyclist and keep up with them on a training ride?

With a Ribble SL e in hand, we headed off to some of the steepest climbs in the Lake District, where Ollie met up with James Shaw of Ribble-Weldtite to find out exactly that.

I had 2 women on the fabulous Ribble e bikes join my cycling group yesterday. They wouldn’t have joined us at all if it wasn’t for these bikes. I think your final comments are right, cycling is to be enjoyed, so let’s not knock riders who invest i great bikes like these. Also as a ride organiser, knowing that some riders might be on e-bikes does mean that I don’t need to modify tougher routes to take account of less strong riders.

My wife has a road bike and been riding for 4 years, but we bought an e-bike for her, (Boardman e-ADV) and she has found that the way it feels and handles has helped her with her bike handling skills, and can even reach down and grab the water bottle and drink for the first time. And leave me on the hills. Which she enjoys just a little bit too much.

I’ve just bought an ebike because of a recently diagnosed heart condition. Whilst it was difficult to get my competitive head around to begin with, it does mean that I can still do the same rides with my mates and tap into the assistance when my heart rate gets a bit too high. Any miles out on a bike, albeit assisted, is still better than zero miles sat on the sofa.

Agree 100% Martin. I’m > 60 with a heart arrythmia so need to keep out of the red zone. Been using the same motor set up on a 13kg Merida eScultura for the last 2 months. Best thing ever. Riding much more with a decent average HR but controlled and never go over the top. Room for 38mm tyres so whenever we get out of Sydney lockdown I’m hitting some gravel.

Cycling is about suffering too. This coming from an amateur cyclist who usually rides a 15kg mountain bike on moderately hilly tarmac, mainly. Then I sometimes ride my much lighter road bike which feels (and is) so much lighter and faster. But I don't care much about average speed. I enjoy my rides while taking in the views around me and doing a good workout, usually on my heavier mountain bike 🚲 as I said.

Yes!! Did a century as the only female rider with 3 much stronger male riders. Obviously couldn't rely on it the whole way over that distance, but it enabled me to keep pace with them on the hills when I needed to. Over 105 miles, I used 20% of the battery and had assistance for the equivalent of 12 miles. Most of the time we were travelling faster than the 16mph limit for assistance. In many respects I had the harder ride on the much heavier bike! But having the ebike as an option made an event that would have otherwise felt inaccessible to me possible. It meant I, as the weakest rider, did not slow the group down so much that it wasn't fun for the stronger riders. And now, having been given that confidence, I'm training to do it next time on the road bike 😀

I've had a Bianchi e-road bike for 8 months .. I struggled with the purchase decision for weeks thinking I would be giving in and taking the easy way. It has actually increased my fitness due to working at a higher intensity on the climbs to the point where I can now ride my non e-road carbon bike and keep up with the group once again. I mainly use the e-road bike for very windy days to drive into head winds with assistance or for a loosener ride after a hard ride on my carbon bike or huge climb rides. E-road bikes are brilliant, they made riding fun .. I highly recommend. PS .... I'm 63 and had heart attacks a couple of years ago and have 3 stents, so I have to ride within a safe heart rate range .. this is where the e-road bike really benefits me.

Bought my wife a gravel e-bike with the Mahle system and now she can keep up with me now. She had issues with her knees but the assist (mostly in level 1) helps greatly with this. Now I am not alone anymore while I am out on the trails. We have an old Android phone on the front to run the ebikemotion app so we can record rides and monitor the battery levels. I love the Lake District so much! I go there every summer and take my bike every year. I have a problem with my foot and have had multiple surgeries to try and make it less painful. When it started to get worse I found it too painful to stand up on my bike for long periods of time, which meant I couldn't cycle as much or up steeper roads. So I bought myself an e-bike ( Orbea gain D30) and it's the best thing I could have done, because now I can go out on my bike and not be afraid of my foot hurting if I do any climbs or standing up and I can enjoy a pain free ride!

I loved Ollie's summary. He captured the reason why I ended up buying an ebike when we moved to live amongst the Shropshire hills. I don't use it for every ride but when it's especially hilly I can choose it, keep up with my hubby (or overtake him!) and actually enjoy the hills for a change. I can also carry his gear so he rides lighter.

My wife getting an ebike is actually one of the best things ever for our marriage, and that's not an exaggeration, it would make a great story I think. It allows us to enjoy rides together without either of us having to compromise on the experience. I have been a cyclist most of my life, but haveeen finding the hills around where I live just too much and I was starting to question my devotion to cycling. FANFARE - Enter the ebike. My world is back, once again I am enjoying going out on my bike, no longer am I having to think of routes to avoid hills. Now it's bring 'em on. People say it's cheating, it's not really cycling, but I try to maximise the periods without power assist and only use the boost when I meet those hills I had been trying to avoid. So I don't see it as cheating, it has restored my love of cycling and allowed me to overcome the inevitable performance loss that comes with age.

Next test and what I wonder: for a 200km day trip can an e-road-bike be still faster because at that distance you can engage e-power only at some sections but not all the time. And does the extra weight then become more of a burden for the sections where you need to save energy. I really wonder if an eBike would give benefits for trips longer than 150 to 200km?
@katiel7166

I do find I use the eco mode of my ebike a lot more than I thought I would. Eventually I realised it's because the ebike is twice as heavy as my analogue bike and has half as many gears. So yeah, a 200km e-ride might be more trouble than it's worth. If I had the $$$ for a light ebike it might be different, and when I next buy I will definitely look for more gears!

Very recently I went from a non-electric to an electric and couldn't be happier with the decision. It's a Fazua bottom bracket motor, and basically looks like a slightly chunky version of a non-electric Domane. What I love most though is that it allows me to go significantly longer than I could on a non-electric bike. 8-10 miles became 19-20 miles even with minimal assist. That's more than enough for me to keep up with groups a touch faster than before. Overall, owning an e-bike has been an incredibly positive experience, and one I'd recommend whole heartedly.

A decade ago mountainbiking in the Swiss alps was exclusive for the young and incredibly fit. Nowadays the scene has changed somewhat and grandpa comes cycling uphill, on his e-mountainbike. E-Bikes are incredible for bringing people into the sport, and for allowing people on different levels to ride and have fun together.

Awesome video. Nicely done GCN. Love Ollie and congrats on the new KOM…but should it count…? I do wonder about that hub design on how to get a battery charge (regeneration of power) during descents and the like. That kind of tech would extend ride distance and time in the saddle over a more epic ride…that tech must be in development. I’d like to see more on this ebike for my wife, who doesn’t like hills. Find a spouse/partner to ride with one of the GCN presenters? Or how bout Conor’s cousin…I’d like to see more of him.

That’s another fantastic and fun video! Thanks Ollie! I went to the Lakes for the first time recently and drove up and down « the struggle » which was scary enough as it’s so narrow. I wondered how I would feel cycling it…might have to find out…lol. Ebikes are great! I hired an e-MTB to take my daughter with me in a tag along cart on the trails of Grizedale on that same holiday. First time riding an MTB and an eBike but absolutely loved the assistance on the hills with added weight of the cart and toddler! My daughter loved it and we would not have done this adventure without an eBike. Now she also got the cycling bug…and that’s priceless! 😊

I'm a fairly fit amateur, I did Wrynose and Hardknott both sides on a round trip, even if I was younger and a pro, I'd have to stop periodically from the all the traffic on the mad bends, let alone doing it in the heat of that day but I am glad I did it without walking. Wrynose up from the Hardknott side is a piece of cake but the other 3 are a pain. Hardknott from the West is tight turns and very steep, East is a bit easier but feels longer. Wrynose from the East is a long slog, steepest at the last bit. 3 of the 4 descents (going East to West down Wrynose is the exception) are godawful as well - either steep plus lots of tight bends or just the terrible road condition down Wrynose West to East

I have a Ribble HF83 which has served me well for a number of years. As I'm no chicken my thoughts have been pointing me towards a Ribble e-bike but, as I live in Canada the half baked petty battery importation regulations prevent me from purchasing one and have done for almost as long as I've had my HF83. This video just makes me all the more envious because Ribble's e-bikes are available in the USA.

For health reasons I had to purchase one several months ago. I have a Pinarello Dyodo which has the same Mahle X35 empowered system as this Ribble. Compared to my conventional Felt F1 w/ Etap and Zipp 303s, the Dyodo feels slightly less responsive because of the weight difference (15.5 lbs vs. 27 lbs) but the power of the Dyodo is really helpful on the climbs and the extra lower weight combined with disc brakes makes for a very stable descent.

As an owner of the Orbea Gain (2021 model) I honestly love this system so much. Everyone thinks that ebikes are easy mode but with the stuff you did in the this video you still need some relative of fitness. If you want a normal feeling bike you can turn the system off and it's a standard bike again. Also they do pair with most head units. Had he had a Wahoo or Garmin you wouldn't need to guess the battery percentage or estimated distance.

So far I have always thought: What the heck! Whether I'm a little faster or slower doesn't matter. But I live in an area where most gradients end at 10%, so I can ride them all. If it were significantly steeper here, only an e-bike would open up these routes.

The interest for me is like yours, for gradients above 10% or... 10% that lasts a long time. My macho side wants nothing to do with this, the "desire-to-climb-mountains-in-the-Alps" side leans the opposite way ha ha.

Was sceptical of ebikes a few years ago, as those I’d see were often people who didn’t want to put the effort in and just wanted to take the easy route (which in hindsight is absolutely fine - my competitive self wasn’t sure).. and after having someone behind me on a very steep climb mention about me slowing on the near vert parts.. only to hear his motor wining away (great incentive as I promptly dropped him from the annoyance).. All that said, after watching a few video stories of those with medical conditions who couldn’t ride (see Fat Creations) and others who’ve lost that edge and want to ride with those they used to, I’ve totally changed my view - brilliant things. Would love to get my wife a e gravel bike, but prices are just too high at the moment.

When you live in an area where daily winds are typically 20+ kph, an ebike is a great investment. My wife and I were out yesterday for a 25 k ride on our ebikes. I ended up not using the assist but she used it several times on the ride. It isn't likely that she would have ridden the route on an unassisted bike. The bikes (Creo and Vado) were slightly heavier than Ollie's but still a respectable 15kg each. The interesting thing is that over 80% of my km-age on the Creo has been unassisted. I do also like that I live in Canada where the upper limit for assist is 32 kph.

In Australia(except QLD), if your motor outputs no more than 200w , there is no speed cut limit. If 250w then 25kph limit applies. This is in the Australian design rules as of January this year. All Australian states use the design rules to define bicycles, and can add restriction as QLD has done by limiting 200w bikes to 25kph assist.

Agree with Ollie 100%. I have a FTP of 260W and my son bests me at 372W. Riding together on normal bikes is no fun - I'm killing myself and my son is dawdling and waiting at the top of every climb. I bought a Canyon Grail:On and, even on its lowest "ECO" power setting I can keep up with my son on virtually all terrain so we can ride together and both get a good work out. I'm typically doing 60km rides with 900m of climbing and it uses about half the battery capacity on a ride. I reckon it would be good for 100km and 1500m of climbing. Worth noting that mine is a US version which provides assistance up to 28mph/ 45kph. Not sure that it would be anywhere near as useful at the lower limits in some countries (unless you hack it to remove the limiter of course).
