Wildlife biologist Liz Bonnin sets off on a worldwide journey of discovery to find out why animals of different species make friends with each other, and even fall in love.
Wildlife biologist Liz Bonnin goes on a journey of discovery to find out the science behind unusual interactions in the animal kingdom. Some of the surprising associations include a polar bear befriending huskies, a cat mothering ducklings, and an orangutan who keeps a pet dog. These odd pairings are not just limited to different species; animal relationships with humans are also explored, as people have been known to keep exotic pets such as lions, hippos and buffalos. Bonnin investigates the root of the affectionate connections and tries to uncover the reasons for the behaviours.
Some people have sought out unusual, and even potentially dangerous relationships, with some very surprising animals.

I saw the same thing with two half brothers. They were born a day apart and brought up together. I bought the younger one and he never settled. If he saw a grey horse he would always call to it. Then four years later I bought his brother. As I led him from the trailer he saw his brother in the field and he got away from me and jumped the gate still wearing his travelling boots. They squealed with delight and nuzzled together. Don't let anyone tell you animals don't remember or that they don't feel love, because they do..

The guy with the polar bear was so sweet. You can tell when he says he loves her, but his logical minds hedges his emotions when he says "It's just a really special bond. I love her a lot. I can't say she loves me. She really is bonded to me." But then his wife so confidently says "She loves him. She loves him. There's no doubt." You can see it in his eyes right there. The very thought that this beautiful animal could love him as much as he loves her means the world to this man, and that can only happen when you love someone else with all your heart.

Members of this suborder typically have nonretractile claws and a long snout, giving them a somewhat "dog like" appearance. Other members of this suborder include racoons, skunks, badgers, weasels, otters, seals, sea lions, walruses, etc. While this diverse group of wildlife shares the same suborder as canines, they are not all in the Canidae Family. However, your comment shows that you have likely studied bears. That's awesome! The classic categories of taxonomy are: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. In zoology, these categories have been expanded with further taxa. If we take the classic taxonomical terms and add in taxonomy used by zoologists we wind up with something like the following long, somewhat confusing system: Kingdom, Subkingdom, Infrakingdom, Phylum, Subphylum, Infraphylum, Superclass, Class, Infraclass, Order, Suborder, Infraorder, Superfamily, Family, Subfamily, Tribe, Subtribe, Genus, Subgenus, Species, Subspecies. To add confusion, there is no real barrier to zoologists adding new taxa into the system, as long as they are at or above the Family level and meet requirements for publication. So, in truth, zoologists can use a near infinite group of taxa to name a new species, I've just mentioned the most commonly used. In addition, botanists have their own system of classification as well. And some people in the scientific community wonder why science isn't believed to be more accessible. lol A Polar Bear's taxonomy is as follows: Kingdom: Animalia, Subkingdom: Bilateria, Infrakingdom: Dueterostomia, Phylum: Chordata, Subphylum: Vertebrata, Infraphylum: Gnathostomata, Superclass: Tetrapoda, Class: Mammalia, Subclass: Theria, Infraclass: Eutheria Order: Carnivora, Suborder: Caniformia, Family: Ursidae, Genus & species: Ursus maritimus Thank you so much for coming to my TEDtalk. I didn't expect it to be this long. -Signed, A Soon to Be Graduate Student With Far to Much Time On Her Hands

@@SovereignStatesman well I guess that makes it even more amazing. Hippos are one of the or the most dangerous animals to humans. There will always be a threat interacting with a wild animal like that. You have to know what you are doing. I assume the women does as she lives right next to hippos. But even you have to admit that they share a special relationship. I saw ducks raised by a cat. Her natural hunter instincts never kicked in as she just gave birth to kittens right before discovering them. They saw each other as kin and I am sure the hippo feels the same about that lady. So I think the chance for the hippo to suddenly forget that and become for no reason aggresive towards her caregiver is very low here. But yeah, a threat is there. And objectively seen its more badass to hang around with hippos than with lions ;)

@LS-oh8kv 4 года назад
emma M I work with a black bear regularly, go in the cage with him, play with him, and I would say the reporter is more brave. When a wild animal like that is around you a lot they trust you, so you have no choice but to respect and trust them. They get used to you. They’re much more unpredictable when there’s strangers around, thus much more dangerous. It’s really easy to forget that they’re a dangerous powerful animal and let your guard down. The reporter has never seen the wild animals here before, has no reason to trust them, the animal is more unpredictable because they’re nervous. So I think the reporter is a little more brave in this situation.

Sharks only tend to hunt/ attack humans by mistake often thinking we're seals etc that's why they take a bite, then spit us out when they realise we're not a prey item. If it was a deliberate attack then they'd finish the job and eat us but that's very uncommon but it does happen occasionally. When I was angry about something, she would be very hesitant and cautious (I generally would avoid working on these kinds of days though). The craziest one though, is that when I was sad, she would always stay very close, nudging and keeping an eye on me. I think what is most important is to have mature attitude and some knowledge about the animal. That doesn't mean young adults wouldn't be able to achieve this however. If enough dedication is present to have a mature attitude in the way to approach them and do their homework about the animal in particular, younger adults could also form bonds with wild animals. But they are wild animals, so you can't just expect any random person to have such positive results with bonding. I believe it really requires someone who is down to earth and knows exactly what he is doing. Animal instincts in general have a very strong sense if someone is feeling like they are in control of a given situation, or just messing around and pretending to be in control when they are not. One thing all these people in the video have in common is a strong self confidence in their relation with the animal, rather then just playing around and doing an "experiment".

The reason why animals befriend humans is simple: they find another social creature and is fascinated with us as we are with them.

Well, maybe. The thing is, it seems that most other animals are not quite as curious as human beings. We have this weird fascination with needing to know how something works, why it works, and how this behavior can be broken or circumvented. Not many other animals share this characteristic.

It really isnt that rare especially when they raise it from youth. Warthog has a close bond with wessels to get a full body spa free of tics and parasites, theres also a bird that leads another species to honeycombs and then the bird is left some of the honey. There are many more bonds of different species. It has alot to do with food.

@@stefanm.734 You haven't spent enough time patiently watching animals. I've seen some interesting things just sitting on my porch. Spiny lizards snuggling and putting arms around each other, a sparrow repeatedly breaking up a fight between two doves, a young woodpecker who lost it's tail and couldn't fly studying the behavior of the thrashers and successfully learning their food gathering method, and thus survived and grew it's tail feathers back and flew away. In Hawaii I was followed by a puffer fish for 15 minutes around a reef, for no other reason than curiosity that I could tell, in the desert I sat down near a desert tortoise and after it realized I wasn't a threat came up to me and put it's front legs on my leg and was looking intently at me. This is a small sample of the things I have witnessed by spending a lot of time in nature. I would say that humans are dull and lacking in curiosity compared to many animals.

I think mostly he's just a professional who worked with animals (in cinema) for all his life, and knows damn well they're NOT "just like human". He respects the difference, and uses it, and will not fall into "what a cuty" where this could lead to his (or others) untimely death.
@Avyrr
@Avyrr 3 года назад
@@MottiShneor I respect and agree with your comment mostly, however I do think it’s appropriate to call it a „cutie“, because come on, if you love animals you respect their beauty automatically and find it cute if you see it licking you. Seeing such a big and extremely powerful Predator lick someone just triggers an inner urge to think of it as a cutie. But I get your point and agree with it, he’s obviously got a very professional background in raising different animals and he also obviously keeps in mind that it’s a wild animal at heart, but I do think after 18 years of bonding he‘s more laid back about it than when they were both younger.

@@Avyrr OK OK.... she's cute. But still damn dangerous, even to who she loves. You see, if she gives a real friendly playful bite, or hugs just a little too lovingly, or do some playful cub "struggle simulation" he'll be crashed and dead in seconds. The difference in sizes I too big and her "built-in-equipment" was carefully developed for killing prey -- not to maintain relations with a human. I mean --- YOU on the other side of the screen and video could definitely say "oh, what a cute thing", because you're in no danger. However, this guy's wife, other visitors, and he himself... are in constant danger. again --- NOT because she ever wants to harm them - but because her natural behavior may be fatal to humans.

I agree. Animals do not feel human emotions , i.e . love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, patience, self-control, they simply reflect what their owners feel (their Creator).
