Can BMW beat Indian and Harley with its new R18 /2 Concept?

With the release of the 2020 Indian Challenger and the Harley Davidson Bronx and Pan America,
The lines are beginning to blur on what markets our American motorcycle icons are willing to compete in
Sure, a fixed fairing m otorcycle from Indian isn't new for an American motorcycle brand nor is a dirt based machine from Harley, but the whole idea of entering new markets and being successful is a challenging feat. (See what I did there?) Challenger, challenging? Indian/Harley? Yes, no? Okay, you get the point.
But a new player is looking to tap into this lucrative market.
Recently BMW just upped the anti with a new concept and now wants some of the American v-twin cruiser market. Only this time, they're doing it with a monstrous 1800cc boxer engine also known as the big boxer. Because you know, we love big ccs here in American to compensate for things we don't have. I don't have multiple bikes at my disposal anymore so 1800cc is enough for the lack thereof. Maybe… Um I like big ccs and I cannot lie? Okay, I'll stop.
Entering the BMW R 18 /2 Concept. While we currently have no power numbers on this slick German piece of engineering, I'm sure we can assume it will have oodles of torque to compete with the likes of Indian and Harley Davidson and all the other players. BMW Motorrad is definitely performance based with its inline 6 powered K1600B although not a V-Twin, it competes directly with the Indian/Harley bagger market so again, competitive numbers are to be expected.
But before we get more into the styling perspective of the R 18 /2 Concept and how this could be a thriving competitor for our beloved American Moto Overlords, I wanted to mention the R 18 Concept that BMW showed earlier this year which had more traditional lines and nostalgia behind it. Based on the comments from viewership of BMWs teasers and articles, there's a good amount of people liking the direction BMW is taking. It's bold, classic and has a more timeless feel and aurora than many bikes we've seen on the market today. It brings all the senses in perspective and hits all that are watching with a dose of dopamine. Of course, that is my own interpretation, but the R18 drips class and elegance. It looks like it wants shaken.. Not stirred martinis, but with a dark side of dirty sometimes. Or maybe, a good old fashion cocktail with aged bitters and a crispy orange peel twist to top it off. Either way, I along with others are with it. What do you think so far? Let's talk about it in the comments.
And here we now have the R 18 Concept 2. Off the rip, more aggressive styling with a bit of edge and sporting the same big boxer engine. It's still as elegant as the R 18, but has more of a new aged feel to it. Almost like a non-invited stranger that shows up to the party and makes it their own. It loves scotch to whine down after a long day of work and also malty chocolate stouts with the crew at the local spot on the weekends. It's even better when it's time to hop to the next event and make a grand entrance in stylish but subtle attention demanding ways. It's hip to the game and knows what it takes to earn your dollar. And that's where BMW steps in for the punch.
Marketing wise, it's being dubbed the motorcycle that the custom scene has been waiting for. The entire concept of the R 18 is to have a customizable platform for people and shops to make this bike their own. With this being only a Concept, there's still DOT requirements to abide by. I'm assuming some of you missed the lack of signals and mirrors here. There's brembo brakes with easy access to the engine and suspension. I'm sure we can expect majority of the features to make it to production but the custom scene is gonna love this thing. But BMW Motorrads Head of Design made a comment that, "A motorcycle is the biggest accessory you can wear. It's not about being the fastest." Now, while we got the big boxer powered the R 18s, it's not about the stroke game. It's about the motion of the commotion. Not about how fast you get there, but how much of life you've enjoyed getting there. But keep in mind that these are concepts. Beautifully done concepts that are not far off from a possible production model. BMW says production models sporting the big boxer are on the way, so we will have to wait until then.

Understanding the boxer engine.. How long ago BMW came up with it.. and how they are engineered to work.. Great vlog, very smooth delivery Sir. I like the bike but always think those boxer engines look too big and a bit ugly! Thanks

Those of us with real legs of standard length are out of luck because there's no place to put them on the R18. I guess BMW's current lack of reliability will be a plus on this bike since it won't allow you to ride it for any length of time....

I really like it, but I cannot imagine how much heat would come off those big jugs. Now if Indian would bring back the nostalgia with the in-line four-cylinder. And Harley do a very old school Panhead or knuckle .

Chldof1TrueKng ok enough speculation from people who are obviously not familiar with heat production and loss on a flat twin Bmw. The bike simply doesn’t run hot enough for you to be bothered by it-the cylinders are out in the airflow. Now take a design like a Harley This bike for decades had all sorts of running problems due to the rear cylinder having to perform in a much hotter environment. And I’m willing to bet that a good number of the comments on the r18 heat are coming from those who ride multi cylinder liquid cooled burn ward bikes. You know, the one where you have to wear expensive gear to keep your legs from cooking Not a chance an R18 will ever be anyway close to that -try the r nine t

The two American brands are grappling with the idea of sportier liquid cooled bikes. Trying to lure the younger generations. BMW decided to go in the opposite direction. This concept was in the works when Ola Stenegard was with BMW. Curious if he has a similar plan for Indian. Either way competition is welcomed in my world.

Beautiful bike. Personally, I prefer the styling of the R18 concept unveiled earlier this year over the R18-2, but like the RNineT line, it is nice to have different versions on the same platform. Not sure I’d like how far out to the sides that big Boxer engine sits, though. 👍👍

Its not that the Boxer isn't something that you knew you wanted... more like the debut of the iPhone. You didn't know you wanted it until it came out but when it did, you knew you it was unprecedented. Concept R/2 if they BMW doesn't runaway with the prices like the iPhones does presently.

Seen the bike on custombike show germany yesterday. Nice bike, but I wouldn't sit on it for any longer than 5 minutes. Low seat+ wide handlebar + feet way backwards = No way.

The Harley mystique is looks, sound and feel. Speed is not essential. Indian was able to capture the market for the people that want a Harley but don’t want to admit it. I was one of them for a long time. I’ve loved BMW’s since the 1970’s. Deep down I wanted a Harley but wouldn’t admit it, for some reason. I ended up with a Harley and BMW. 😀 I love them both, but for different reasons. I think the engine on this concept bike looks too big. It looks like an WW I airplane. I can’t see it competing with Harley. Just my 2 cents. Loved the video. Especially “I like big CC’s and I cannot lie”. 😂

If given the opportunity, I'd ride dat. I've only ridden a BMW dual sport, but I remember the quality and comfort of the ride and I'd expect the same on this Moto.

Good to see bmw working on a cruiser but the engine is too big I don’t think it should have been more than 1k cc. But love the retro trend in general if only car manufacturers would follow suit!

Commuted on my boxer and lane splitting was not as difficult as one might think. Not to different from a bagger with a fairing and/or highway bars. Although the heads on the R18 look much larger than the older boxers.

I like big cc motors but I don't like shaft drive you can't eliminate torque lag, my vmx 1,200 vmax has full time v boost and the riva chain kit. So zero torque lag. If BMW would offer a chain kit in market or aftermarket either way get away from shafts on two wheels.

I cant see any way to relocate the controls in the aftermarket. Its pretty but looks so uncomfortable. Mids are ok if youre sitting higher but this is just redunk. It looks like hes squatting to poop.

This bike looks amazing! Just like you Bicasso, I had my eye on and R Nine T before your videos sold me on the Scout Bobber. I like what BMW is doing with the R18, I just hope they price it reasonably, I could see this thing coming in at 18K.
@901pics

I would bet they don't overprice all the models. BMW will probably offer lower priced models in second or third year. They probably will follow what they did on RNINET except have a few much more expensive bikes in the line up.

Trevor Gainey Knowing BMW almost $20k MSRP is a good estimate for the low end.
