Everyone know Bruno is terrible, but to find out just how terrible, I became Bruno for a full game challenge in Pokemon Yellow.

-Bruno Team Challenge: No other Pokemon in battle, no items except X
Defends in battle, no glitches exploits (other than badge boost glitch)
*IF team faints, we can faint HM pokemon to blackout*
-No Vitamins
-0 DVs/0 IVs
-Must use Bruno's AI

Scoring:
-Pokemon Starts with a score of 100 points.
-Minus 0.1 points per reset (10 resets = 1 point)
-Minus 0.25 points per optional battle (4 optional battles = 1 point)
-Minus 1 point per TM (Excluding Broken TMs)
-Minus 10 points per Broken TM (Double Team, Substitute, Mimic, Rest, Bide, Toxic)

Process:
Every Pokemon goes through 3 separate tests:
1. Minimum Battles
2. No TMs
3. Optimization for score on the tier-list
Standard Rules:
1. 0 DVs/ 0 IVs (Worst Possible Stats).
2. No Items in Battle.
3. No Stat Boosting Vitamins (HP Up, Carbos, Iron, Calcium, Protein).
4. No other Pokemon in battle (HM Mules allowed outside of battle).
5. Timer STARTS when I select New Game, and ENDS when the Champion is defeated.
6. Required Battles are the 65 battles that cannot be avoided without glitches (See Jrose11's original Minimum Battles video.
7. Pokedoll Glitch is a glitch and therefore banned.
8. Brock Through Walls is banned.
9. Badge Boost Glitch is allowed without restrictions.
10. Save states for routing and catching HM Pokemon only.
11. No wild encounters, except to catch HM Pokemon.

Yep, although, he’s still at a level disadvantage on the damage calculation, so the compounding boosts are probably the biggest factor.

Ya know, as soon as he said "How are we gonna beat Sabrina?" my first thought was "No matter if the context was in-universe canon or in a challenge like this, the only way Bruno/Bruno's team is defeating Sabrina is with heavy use of those Onix" and as we see, I wasn't wrong xD

Bruno's intelligence is calculated with imaginary numbers which only the one like Bruno can comprehend. The nature of those numbers is so obscure that when psychics like Sabrina try to comprehend them it makes them lose sanity and open gates for Forbidden Ones. Bruno's victory is thus not so surprising.

Wow, I didn’t know that the lost hiker had a name and his own team! I always wondered if Game Freak just ran out of catridge memory, it sure seemed like you should’ve been able to fight him, or at least have some more dialogue than his mysterious “How did I lose?” whenever you enter the big room while having either a water type or psychic type in your party’s roster. I bet he just wipes the floor with the elite four, and probably even Mewtwo.

Only the first tick of Comet Punch saved you against Brock. Had to attack into Bide so many times, lol! Other thoughts: against Sabrina... "the name of the game is to hit and not be hit." Fitting that you were using a boxer at the time. Pity 'Chan got knocked out in that fight, but that can happen when you cannot hit anything, either. Last note: "'Chan, 'Chan, he's our man! If he can't do it, Crap..." Even with his terrible Special, Double Team plus coverage is still solid.

Underground path between rt 5 and 6 you can trade a Cubone for a Machoke that automatically evolves into Machamp. No randomizer needed. You'd have to get lucky enough to encounter a cubone first though

It kind of makes you wonder how Bruno even became a part of the Elite Four. To be able to even get in, one has to have all badges. But it would have been nice (I know you were going for all of the Elite Four), where the video ends with your character in his room, almost like he is reliving his life while meditating.

Periodically, the "We get to attack" would cause a a couple seconds of confusion before I remembered it's the random chance not a speed issue (when their wasn't one at least). This was such an interesting and out of the ordinary challenge. I think this run was the first time I've ever seen a fire move defrost a pokemon. I'm hesitant to suggest this cause it could be extremely tedious, but it could be interesting to do a couple follow up challenges. One being with the so-called good AI, which may not be as bad as it seems if you have control of what the move set is. The second being a 'good AI+' that takes the intended/on paper idea of the gen 1 good AI but correcting for the clear oversights in how it actually played out in practice. The good AI+ might have some subjective gray areas to the choices, but since it's so clearly different between the idea and practice, I'd think the choices would be mostly clear, at least, but still not at the level of just letting a competent human play as Bruno. Basically, what if Bruno was smart by gen 1 standards and what if the devs had made him the intended smart of gen 1. I could easily believe we'd find interesting results if this is extended to the other elite 4 as others have suggested, and some of the other trainers as well. Maybe we'd find Lt. Surge was actually a threat in his youth but is washed up now? Or it's as bad as it sounds.

I definitely agree that a good AI run could be interesting. They still randomize in cases where multiple moves are the same type effectiveness (even if one of the moves is effectively worthless) and there can be some ridiculous softlocking situations like Lance spamming Agility versus Poison and Fighting Pokemon.

Broadly speaking, yes. If we got lucky enough to use Double Team, the fights would be stupidly easy. But Bruno likes hard things... Hard Rock Sneks and hard challenges

Certainly. Simulating her Dewgong would be the hardest part because of how the AI was changed in Yellow. I need to study up on that, but everything else would be pretty straightforward

Yeah, she actually loves Rest on turn 2, so you can exploit her with some Pokemon by using Dig or Fly turn 1, hit her turn 2 and have her Rest, then setup a badge boosting move 3 times for free (provided you outspeed)

Honestly, with good AI he would be so much better! I mean, his Yellow moveset is completely broken with the Double Teams on the Hitmons, he just doesn't know how to use his set.

Too bad elemental punches suck for Hitmonchan since they just HAD to be special moves... Also, here's the best possible moveset I could give to Bruno's Hitmonchan and assuming we still retain the random AI...and believe me, it's very sad and wonky: - Seismic Toss (For the ghosts and it's "best" fighting type move since it has no good coverage and Gengar has absurd special) - Mega Punch (The only move that can't do a set amount of damage and hey, I need a punch move for the punching mon) - Toxic - Double Team Other members I'd fix Hitmonlee - Hi-Jump Kick - Seismic Toss - Mega Kick - Double Team Onix - Dig or Earthquake - Body Slam - Rock Slide - Fissure, I guess? XD Poliwrath - Hypnosis - Submission (For STAB) - Blizzard - Hydro Pump Machamp - Earthquake - Rock Slide - Karate Chop - Submission

The agilities after Brock aren't the worst thing in the world, since the badge boost glitch starts boosting your attacks. Like in the rival 3 fight on the SS anne, i dont think that 2-hit comet punch would have OHKO'd Eevee without them at all. The double teams and x-defends are pretty nice too for the same reason lol

This was a great watch! I split it up into 3 separate viewing sessions. Bruno's team is actually pretty sick looking except for Onix's stats. Being a fighting type + Onix trainer feels like such a clutch underdog story in a way. Bruno is like the character in a show who would never be allowed to win a huge tourney or something, because he's so tough that writers would want a more unexpected winner. Plus, psychic type is really gewd in Gen 1. I wonder if anyone could hook you up with a custom mod that makes the Ai take over in battle, doing everything for you except for choosing which pokemon to send out after one faints. This would make it vastly easier to have the mental stamina to do a challenge like this in the future. Plus, you could essentially commentate the battles, which would be very funny.

Thr legend of Burno was getting a laugh out of me for the whole video 😂😂😂. I guess that the hitmons were the true aces of Bruno alongside his signature x defend.😂😂😂 I think that it's time for Surge or red and blue Blaine to get out there and get the title of worse trainer in gen 1 from the true champion hiker Bruno.😂😂 I bet that was a hell of a grind to complete on a single live stream, you're the true legend for making it with your sanity intact.😊

Sanity was the main issue in this one for sure 😂 Blaine and Surge will need some redemption, but I would need to allow them to go to a higher level than the original one, so maybe Nuzlocke rules style of level cap after Brock (because they probably have to overlevel for Brock)

I've done a good number of R/B challenges and I feel like I don't see Bruno use X Defends this much. Maybe because he's almost always getting mowed down so hard. Lol. The sheer number of them being used through this is hilarious.

I've done something similar. I used Bruno's team in Red/Blue against the Elite Four. EXP was off and it was his exact team. I actually used ACE to steal the exact pokemon from the Elite Four. It required me to go through 5 times to collect all 5 pokemon from them. It didn't go well. It was possible, but it took me a very long time, even with saves and reviving the team between battles. The worst out of all the Elite Four for sure.

With the X Defense you could have the random number generator to 1-16, for the same effect you got in two rolls. 13-16 is X Defense, 4/16 = 1/4 odds. (Which seems to be what you're doing? Or maybe I'm wrong about that?) 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 are the moves, 3/12 = 1/4 odds given that you didn't use X Defense. (And when you've hit the limit for X Defense use you can use 1-4, 5-8, 9-12 and 13-16 for the moves, they all seem to have 4 moves at that point. Although yes, that would get pretty confusing to keep straight.)

@@RBYPokemonChallenges I can suggest to use the closest fisher to the gate in Route 12 (typically untouched) to set Oaks team. You still have to choose between venusaur/charizard/blastoise team to fight, as the developers didn't intend to use this final boss. Set the team at ./data/trainers/parties.asm, and the text/win event flag at ./scripts/Route12.asm. Both Oak and the fishermans already have the same AI modifications 1 and 3 🙂

I do NOT recommend using Lorelei AI. You'll be stuck using nothing but rest at any poison type.

52:19 Onix uses dig against Giovanni's Rhydon, and is super lucky to not get hit by Rhydon's Earthquake. Which... The differences between the player's Pokémon and the AI opponent's Pokémon are very interesting to me, so for my own amusement, I'm listing them here to the best of my ability. The main disadvantage the player faces here is having to worry about PP. In your specific case, you have another disadvantage in the form of lower DV's, since the AI always has 9 in Attack and 8 in everything else. The most interesting difference, one that I would say is a double-edged sword, regards when the AI chooses its moves. The AI doesn't actually choose its move at the start of the turn like the player does, but rather once it actually moves. Thus, if the player switches, the AI prioritizes its moves based on the Pokémon the player switches in, which is at least theoretically advantageous for the AI. This is also why the AI doesn't have priority on switching or using items, which is a disadvantage it has against the player. While this wasn't much of a factor with Bruno's completely random AI (technically I'm pretty sure he has AI Modification 1 but he also doesn't have any moves that are influenced by it) - only really coming into play with giving you priority on his X Defends - if you use the AI of a trainer with AI Modification 3 ("Good AI"), or even the AI of a trainer who just has AI Modification 1 and the status moves it affects, you won't be able to utilize the AI's ability to react to switches. The player has one massive advantage over an actual AI in this instance: a sizeable stat advantage over the AI's Pokémon. This is due not only to the Badge Boosts (which I think alone more than make up for your lower DV's) and the Badge Boost Glitch, but also from the Stat Experience the player accumulates over the course of the run.

Incredible. I think the one thing I would do differently is lock in my team order at the start of the match. Since AI trainers in this game always just go in order when they send out their Pokémon, I think having to do likewise, and thus needing to plan out that order before the battle, would be an interesting limitation.

Yeah, I did the team of Metapod, Kakuna, and Magikarp in the past. Weedle and Caterpie are too weak without using X items at the end, so even at Level 100 the Caterpie, Weedle, Magikarp teams fails (unless we gave them something "special")

I wonder if Bruno used to be super OP in development, which caused them to do a last-minute over-nerf. Maybe he had good AI, Hitmonchan had high special, and the two Onixes used to be Golem and Rhydon. Just a Hitmonchan with good AI and high special would be pretty difficult to deal with because of the type coverage.

Hmm, thanks to leaks we do have a pretty clear sense of what the old teams used to look like, let me see what Bruno was up to... PRIMEAPE (52), HITMONLEE (54), HITMONCHAN (54), MACHAMP (50) - Hmm, that's... probably even easier than his final team. Yikes. The second look over for teams Bruno was given... PRIMEAPE (52), HITMONLEE (49), HITMONCHAN (49), MACHAMP (55), uh... they somehow made everything even weaker, aside from the Machamp. Looks like Bruno was always incredulously underwhelming. It's a bit shocking, Poliwrath was never even considered and Primeape was completely booted from his team.

It seems they weren't entirely sure what to do with the endgame teams at first, even Lorelei didn't have a Slowbro at first, instead having all four (except Arcticuno) Ice types. The levels were also lower across the board, with the big differences being Agatha and the Champion (Agatha had a team of Eeveelutions instead of Ghosts, the Champion had all starter's evolutions for the final battle.) Though they lowered Bruno's levels at first, they got a substantial boost for the final game by 8-10 levels, depending on the Pokemon. Unfortunately it seems Hitmonchan/lee were added so late their movesets aren't in the leaks, and no stats have been recorded from the leaks (though the pages that have the info. may just have not included it.)

I honestly think that the champion is stronger in red and blue rather than yellow. I mean, the eeveelution is not a good ace as blastoise/venusaur/charizard. Magneton is bad too. Ninetales is super fragile. The only good addition is sandslash, if they just fixed the movepool from red/blue team as they did with other trainers, would have been much better. Would have been harder to win the game against that team. Anyway, this is honestly the funniest run I've ever seen, you are genuinely a masochist 🤣

I think the upper four gym leaders: Koga, Sabrina, Blaine and Giovanni could also be eligible for this run, though most would vastly prefer their Yellow line up of Pokemon. Koga sleep powder and psychic Venomats and Venomoth from Yellow are a big improvement over his rather ordinary poison mons from Red. Blaine is a joke in Red with an stupid AI that jugs potions all the time while a strong powerhouse in Yellow. Giovanni might be even more of a loser in Red than Bruno and is a total beast in Yellow. Sabrina might actually prefer her Red team to her Yellow one in a run like this and I think her AI there is a bit better too... maybe.

I'm still trying to figure out how the RNG works. I'd be doing mod options where 0 is x defend and 4 is 4th move. But still doesn't go with what I'd do. Also great to see the accessibility options the game boy had. The animations working for your eyes is something I wouldn't have thought of.

I do not wish to criticize but you made a mistake on the AI. Bruno may be able to choose his starting order, but he does not choose the order in which he sends out his Pokémon. The AI always chooses the next Pokémon on the list. I realize that you would end up with no agency in the battles, but it would be accurate to the challenge.

I noticed that you choose your move by randomizing between 1-12, why do that instead of 1-4? My theory is that 1-4 means you are almost always making a different move every turn which 1-12 fixed. However, since one of the numbers is removed from consideration every turn, it’s actually a choice of 11 options. Making the same move twice in a row is 2/11 ~ 18.2% < 25% so your Bruno AI is actually biased towards making different choices every turn. Additionally, you could combine the x-defend and move selection by randomizing between 1-16. If you get 13 or larger then you x-defend otherwise the 12 leftover numbers are your normal move selection process!

For sure. I was rolling each time independently, so there was an even chance for each move. I use 12 because it is applicable in cases where I had 2, 3, or 4 options, which especially happened in the early game. Already working on an improvement to this for the next one!
