Can Catholics Go to Medjugorje? Fr. Chris Alar Explains Pilgrimages and Church Approval

The fact that people are sending "hateful letters" is very disturbing. No wonder Our Lady, Queen of Peace, is sad. So many of her children do not have peace in their heart. Pray for peace. CREDO, SPERO, AMO.

I had a profound conversion there 16 years ago where God intervened through our Blessed Mother to save my marriage having led a life of promiscuity. She led me out of darkness to Christ transforming me from a lukewarm Catholic to having a zeal for Jesus in the Eucharist. Love the film, “Jesus Thirsts.” She recently called for a nine-day novena to pray for world peace and that struck a chord with me and her 43rd anniversary message saying marriage and family is under attack. It really burns my heart. Repent and return to God.❤

Thank you Fr. Chris. My wife and I just returned from a pilgrimage to Medjugorje. I felt called to visit after hearing many many positive testimonies. While we didn't witness anything supernatural (though one couple in our group did) we did receive several graces from the trip and spiritual direction. It is a place where peace reigns and living ones faith is encouraged - there is daily mass, confession, adoration, and Rosaries, as well as talks and religious concerts. We also met the archbishop who is the Apostolic Visitor. Very saintly man. I would recommend it to anyone who likewise feels called to go.

I was converted 33 years ago to the Catholic Faith, my visit to Medjugorge in 1991, led to my conversion and baptism the following Easter at St. Maria Goretti Church in Scottsdale, Az I actually went to my first confession in Medjugorge, they had rows of Priests available when I was there, thanks be to God.

Father Chris, this is a sign that what you are doing is right and for God otherwise the evil ones will not attack you and attack what you are doing. More power to you and to what you are doing!!!

Father Chris, You are much more charitable than I am. What's with these people who troll your presentations looking for a "gotcha" moment. A bit too much false pride out there. Maybe instead of trying to "catch you" in error, we should all get down on our knees and thank God for courageous priests like you. Remember folks, "No priests, no Eucharist."

Thank you Fr. Alar for sharing that very explanatory letter from Fr. Jason Lewis. It very clearly explains what people need to understand about the reported apparitions in Medjugorje. Just after Fr. Donald Calloway was ordained, I was blessed to bring him to Medjugorje, I do believe as a thank you to Our Lady for his vocation. He asked for permission to bring young Jason Lewis with our group. You are totally right!! There are many fruits of Medjugore, the biggest is vocation to priesthood and religious life. New Orleans, where I live is a very Catholic area and we have quite a few young men who will say that Medjugorje is what brought them to the priesthood. Thank you for that wonderful homily. And thank you Fr. Jason for writing that letter.

I felt compelled to go to that place in 1987, to a communist country, to a place I did not believe there were visions happening, but I just HAD to go. Stayed in old stone home of a villager who didn't speak English. And one day there I was struck by the Holy Spirit and fell down crying, suddenly believing that place and all Catholic teachings absolutely true. I KNEW so. My life since then has been one of growing in love, to be more like our Savior, and bringing others to the pathway. Rusty Reno of First Things magazine once criticized Medjugorje, and I commented on the good fruits. And he saw things differently, and he is now one of my friends.

I was always present virtually at the novena everyday except the first day, I prayed to Mama Mary to let me understand the language that was being recited during the rosary and I did I was able to follow the prayer and responded in English, I felt this comfort and peace in my heart and to know that Mama Mary is there and giving Her blessing to all. I wish I could go there one of these days. 🙏🏾❤️💐

My pilgrim group visited Medjugori this year, 2024 April. So many couples and families got conversion at heart as all them were looked no peace at heart. But after climbing the apparition hill and praying at the Blue Cross, there were testimonies in the group how all of them felt peace at heart including me and my husband. Im from belfast i was at Medjugorje 3 weeks ago for my first pilgrimage and by god it was the most peaceful place iv been in i never seen anything spectacular i didnt need to.i seen love and peace in everyone that was there i went with my brother his first time also in our group of 100 we went there as strangers to each one came home as friends that was our miracle and that is why im going back in september just to thank our blessed mother for the love me and the brother felt in this holy place god bless you fr stay strong our lady is protecting us all from all the doubters

Fr Bears also was great fruit of Medjugore. He passed away last summer. He was a true follower and sheperd.❤ His homilies are proof. They live on, because The word is alive.

Thank you Fr. Chris for sharing this excellent explanation on Medjugorje. I’ve been on a pilgrimage there. I describe it as where Heaven and earth meet. I witnessed a miracle of the sun one evening as a small group of us were descending from Cross Mountain. There were 2 Sisters/nuns with us and they could not look at the sun because it was too bright for them. I starred right at the sun for a good 15 minutes and witnessed the most amazing movements and motions of it but the most beautiful part of this miraculous experience was, is when I witnessed what appeared to be the sun breaking into 2pieces and overlap one another, just as the priests do in the elevation of the Consecrated Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist celebration of Mass. The sisters told me that the outdoor Mass was being celebrated and what I saw coincided with the timing of the elevation of the consecrated Body of Christ. I’m so blessed to have been able to go to Medjugorje. My hope is to go back again.

My late parents went on several pilgrimages and this included Međugorje on a few occasions. Their first trip there was in 1992. It was filled with so many wonderful graces and experiences that especially my mother received. She was already a strong woman of faith prior to her first visit and Međugorje only deepened her faith and holy ministries. Thus, this holy place of Mary our Mother will always remain close in my heart and I hope to go to Međugorje myself and soon.

Of course we can. My monsignor who confirmed me in 1991 was a truly precious and holy man of God. We had the visionaries visit several times. We love our Blessed Mother and are loved and protected by her. I never limit the ways God works. He is far beyond what we can comprehend. Deo gratias!

Fr I agree with you. I do believe the early apparitions however. I am skeptical of the present ones. With that said I do believe this is a holy site and that many miracles have taken place. I simply adore the analogy of Medjugorje being Mary's temple. It most certainly is! This wonderful priest's account of the Ukranian/English language barrier being overcome is a supernatural fruit of Medjugorje that I've previously read about. I can't recall the precise details, but did read about one of the visionaries (who had never had an Italian lesson in her life) being able to speak to an Italian audience quite fluently in their mother tongue. I pray we can all join together in helping Our Blessed Mother's immaculate heart triumph 🙏

I'll be very happy to go to the pilgrimage with Fr. Chris to Medjugorje, but the price is $5000, and the land only is $4000. I can't afford that. My Ukrainian Catholic priest said for this money it's a tourism, not a pilgrimage.

Blessings, gratitude! I read articles about pilgrimages to Medjugorje that indicated more or less that we can go, but it cannot be associated to the supposed apparitions. A Priest or Priests have suggested to go instead to an approved apparition (and who knows if it is even closer to us). If this is from God, let us be patient, prayerful, obedient while we wait for the news from Rome, the final decision. Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for us, holy Priests, holy, glorious Catholic Church to lead all to repentance, holiness, peace, salvation. God bless all. 🕊️🙏⛪🕊️

I read a statement from the vactian that it was open for pilgrimages as a place of prayer in 2019. It goes on to say the faithful should not participate in any religious ceremonies there ie. Unproven appartions and, if so, are disobedient to the church of jesus Christ. You will see in due time why we should be obedient to the church. May the Lord have Mercy on us.

Well, the seminary in Vienna is full of really good and profound seminaristischem and a huge amount of priests are the fruits of Medjugorje. And we have always one visionary who comes to Vienna and we have a very long freedom prayer in St Stephan’s. And very often

Fr Alar...you are one of the remarkable church leader that people look up to including myself and I thank you for your presence... I went to Medjugorje as being offered to me by an unknown sponsor, I believe a year after COVID ( and yes, me and my brother got sick there and had covid, we were left and was not able to go home back to US with other pilgrims as scheduled). ..I am torn between if its real or not, but I just went anyway thinking maybe the Bl Mother wants me to come. i tried to be so objective as possible. My gut feeling is telling me that the apparitions are not true and not of God, and the Bl Mother is writing through these crooked lines and making good something out from it . I was also questioning myself, if this is not true or not from God, how would I explain the great fruits of conversion, of the gifts of religous vocations and priests including Fr Calloway's ??? My personal take is what I just stated---- either the Bl Mother is working in this place to bring out something good and fighting against the evil, and falsehood that was already started. Probably, Im coming from a self righteous opinion... but have you considered the history of the place and the seer saying the Bl. Mother dropping baby Jesus(Lord)? Have you thought about their message that all religions are equal??? If so, then our Catholic faith with the Holy Eucharist is of no value...and that is so INCORRECT . Have you any explanations or excuses for their disobediences and building churches without permissions???( the you tube Sensus Fidelium- Discerning Appartitions) AND FR RIPPERGERS discerning apparitions somehow has given me light on all of these...I dont know but Im still hesitant to put my guards down( “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.).... I hope you won't too, Fr Alar, and remain objective...its probably quite hard bec you have experienced something supernatural during your confession...but could it also be the evil one deceiving? Was it Padre Pio was visited by the enemy in disguise during confession?? Also, I'm not aware of any Magisterial document that says the alleged apparitions need to stop before a final judgment can be made. Even the recent document on apparitions said judgment needs to occur quickly for the sake of the common good. A judgment absolutely can, and should, be made ASAP. The fact that it's taking so long for a final judgment to be rendered from Rome has more to do with the possibility of scandal from rendering a negative judgment. One of the many bad fruits of Medjugorje is that people have these apparitions as the foundation of their faith. And as such, if these apparitions are false, so is the Faith. Others have stated that they don't care what judgment the Church makes, they will still treat these apparitions as genuine. As such, it's become a weapon and source of dissention. Even Pope Francis has made comments that this is not our Blessed Mother. Very little doubt in my mind this is the work of Satan, seeking to tear faithful Catholics away from Rome.

Before looking at any fruits, we must see if apparition teaches the faith(which this seems to be the problem). Why go to Medjugorje for natural "fruits" when one can go to Guadalupe or Fatima where there are supernatural fruits?

The good fruit; Holy Spirit. The concern is the bad fruit, I know that we all know there has been bad fruit. Why stray from apparitions that have already been approved to give time to those that are not yet approved.
