Spring cleaning also came about because homes were heated all winter by coal stoves or furnaces, which left everything coated with a layer of soot. Brighter light and longer days made the accumulated filth easier to see. 😢 Once the furnace could be shut off, it was time to drag all the furniture outside in nice weather for cleaning, as well as giving EVERYTHING inside a thorough scrubbing: floors, walls, windows, fixtures, etc.

This is AMAZING!! I was just having this "ugh I don't wanna" 😫 about cooking dinner tonight. The dinner plan is a big job it takes about an hour and I was just not feeling it! I could've asked my husband to bring home an unhealthy pizza but instead, dreadfully I drug myself up to cook because I know it's better for mine and my family's health AND it's going to save us money. Money we can use for fun adventures on the road! This is going ti stick with me forever now😂 My brain is getting bigger!! 😅

I switched to cooking early in the day even at 6am if needed as I’m a morning person and can’t stand to make dinner at night when I’m most tired. Even when I had a teen boy eating 4 dinners per night, I’d make up as much as possible before lunch. Love doing double batches to cut down on time. I also had anxiety going into a kitchen due to my sis causing fights every night washing up when I was 7yo and an ex-narc husband grunting resentment whenever I was in the kitchen when he wanted to be in there and complain about my cooking and cleaning. I had NET therapy and it helped immensely. All the best for your road trips!

Okay I know this isn't the video about helping your kids declutter. But I just spent two hours with my son decluttering his room. There is more work to be done but I did exactly what you said and I left the keep or get rid of decision entirely up to him explaining how if we get rid of things he doesn't want anymore he will have room for the things he wants. He did it with no arguing or trying to get out of doing it. And I kept quiet on things he wanted to keep that I would have thrown away. So just wanted to tell you that.

Hi Cas. The article that you linked is about post operative delirium which is a different thing from dementia of aging. Delirium is a medical emergency and can often be treated and resolved whereas dementia is about the deterioration of the brain through the development of plaques and tangles. If having a thicker AMCC helps avoid delirium that is good but delirium is not strictly about aging. It can be about co existing diseases or conditions, medications, infections, etc. I do wish that Chris Williamson had linked some scholarly articles to support Dr Huberman's theory about how doing unwanted tasks can increase resiliency and tenacity because those are desirable traits for aging, I agree. It makes me think of people like Holocaust survivors who have been forced to work in horrible conditions, and how so many of them lived to a very old age and often with "all their marbles". There are so many variables though, like genetics, environment, etc. You do raise some very interesting ideas for us all to think about, Cas!! Keep on researching!!
@aka_fg
@aka_fg 5 месяцев назад
I think that's so interesting w the AMCC, because it also solidifies my theory of why going to the gym, meeting strangers, cleaning (all the uncomfortable things for me in life) have an exorbitant amount of pay off immediately but also in the long run. edit: typo

It's Autumn here in Australia, a time when i normally do my "spring" cleaning. I don't want to be shutting up my house for winter if it's dusty and grimy. I also don't want to be stuck inside cleaning when spring comes! I want to be outside, planting flowers and vegies and enjoying myself!

FYI: One of the earliest known references to SPRING CLEANING is found in the Jewish tradition of Passover, which is observed annually in March or April. People remove all traces of Chametz or Leavened bread, which is prohibited leading up to the holiday. This AMCC information is remarkable. Explains so much. So appreciated. Happy Micro Sucking lol.

Wow Cass, this fits in with what I’ve been doing for the last 2wks. Long story but worth it. I painted and fixed my firewood box for this winter. I hate this one as it doesn’t hold enough for a few days and there’s always debris around the area. So I decided to make a taller one and put it on castors so I could vac around it and keep more wood in the box instead of putting it on the floor. Then I decided to make a wood shelter for the garage so I don’t slip outside and always have dry wood near the door. This has made me feel like I’m getting back to my 13yo self who was organised and tidy. It’s making it so easy and I’ll be able to do the micro suck of cleaning up the lounge debris and it’s safer as I can fill the cart by the front door and there’s no wet feet on the floors. ❤ I’m also concentrating on doing two tasks in one session which is working well.

This is why in Islam as a muslim we pray 5 times a day. We fast for one month every year. Have to wake up early right before sunrise to pray the first one. Its hard but you do it because you have an end goal which is paradise. Thats most likely why most of my elders including my mums grandma still alive is all good even remembers me as one of the grandkids even though she doesnt see me often as I live overseas. But its crazy to hear this. Allah knows everything and everything he asks of us provides and benefits us in so many ways.

This is so true! I'm glad you did this podcast, Cass! The only thing I would add is that it's important to remember that "normal aging of the brain" is not the same as cognitive decline or dementia. (Cognitive decline does not have to happen as a normal part of aging). Some people think that their normal aging brain is a sign of dementia, which it actually isn't. If we follow the simple rules of doing those things we don't want to do, then we create those new neural pathways and our brains LOVE it! Just curious though… If I find out that unloading the dishwasher (some thing I have hated to do since 1970) is actually not so bad and I learned to accept it and not hate putting those dishes away, will continuing to put them away have the same effect on my brain? Cause if not maybe I should just leave them in the dishwasher and tell my husband to do it! LOL Thank you again for this podcast it was fabulous.

I live in a very small home, and I am committed to decluttering for my peace of mind. Job 1 is to never have more than the minimal things on horizontal surfaces. My biggest barrier to that right now is stuff that doesn't have a home. For example: things that I need to take with me to the car or to outside shed. Birthday gifts that I need to wrap and birthday is in a few days. Don't have time to wrap, so the gift is on the table until I can get to wrapping it so I don't forget. Photos I'm going through while I watch TV. After an hour, it is time to go to bed, and photos are still spread out in organized piles. Can anybody tell me what they do to keep horizontal surfaces clear?

Jews cleaning their houses and making sure there are no bread crumbs has to do with celebrating Passover and the Feast of the Unleavened Bread. During the first Passover and the escape from Egypt, they could only have unleavened bread because there was no time to allow bread to rise during their escape. Once they crossed the Red Sea and could camp for extended periods, then they had time for bread to rise before baking. During the celebration period, all yeast and products containing yeast MUST be removed from the household in remembrance of that time and to honor God for their salvation.

Yes, for sure a contributing factor, alongside typically having fewer close friends (than women) and feeling obsolete/un-needed after retirement (unless they pick up hobbies/clubs etc), then there's also the reluctance to go to the drs when they're sick... But yeah, historically, running the house and kids' schedules (and juggling a million things at once) has been the wife's job, so we keep our brains ticking better for longer 🤷‍♀️

I am a long-time fan and am very, very disappointed by the casual approach you take to the differences between different cultures and different religions (not necessarily synonymous terms). Are you under the impression that no Jewish, Chinese, or Japanese people listen to your podcast? I can't speak for whatever you may have gotten wrong about various Asian cultures and religions (which are not all the same as each other), but for you to confuse ridding the house of every speck of leavened bread in preparation for the Jewish religious holiday Passover with some kind of general "cultural" spring cleaning doesn't speak well for the research you say you did. Please educate yourself about Passover, and don't talk publicly about what you don't know anything about. You owe it to yourself and all your listeners to do better. And I believe you can!

I'm wondering if there was a need to be so harsh in your comment. I highly doubt she meant to hurt anyone in whatever she said. Your message read as a mean despising comment. That may not have been your intention but that's how it felt.

Thank you for this comment. I love Cass so much, but this was a miss in regards to Passover.

I don’t think she’s being too casual by mentioning the cross-cultural tendency to greet spring with renewal of the physical space and pointing out a few examples. But, I agree that the examples chosen should have enough context to make sense. Passover cleaning is a physical process that has spiritual meaning. Cass mentioned part of the physical element and acknowledged she was speaking from limited notes. However, it would have made more sense if she had said that Passover cleaning, including removing bread, was part of the holiday. Otherwise it kind of sounds like we suddenly all decide to go low-carb and *really* go for it 😂

@@StollerSystem @StollerSystem Hello StollerSystem. You're right, ''I am a long time fan'' doesn't sound harsh. But after these few words the whole comment turns out to sound sour because of the expressions used. ''I'm very, very disappointed'', ''are you under the impression that'', ''the research you say you did''... The ''Please educate yourself about Passover'' coming just after a long explanation on how Asian cultures are all different (in case the host was as ignorant as not knowing that either... that's how the text in bracket reads, indeed) make it sound despising and patronizing. And if there is a ''please'', it is merely a rhetorical one to pretend to attenuate the orders that follow. ''Don't talk publicly of what you don't know anything about''. It is not the argument that is questionable here, but the tone. Giving orders... As for the following sentence, it's got the exact same patronizing tone: ''you owe it to yourself (!?? Isn't the host the only judge of that?) and to your listeners to do better (to do better... the host may have invested a long time in reading about Passover and still have been in a complete misconception of this tradition. Error does not mean ''disrespect'' or lack of work. It can be a genuine misunderstanding. It's a human flaw that happens to all of us.) ''I believe you can!'', after all the previous comments, does not sound nice as it should. It's contaminated by the tone of the rest of the comment. So, I stand by what I said earlier, couldn't there have been another way to say all that? I even think this is a terrible waste of opportunity: instead of attacking the host, explaining to us all what Passover is would have been a way to correct an error and ''educate'' us, who don't know what the tradition is. Knowing and understanding each other is a way to remain in peace with different cultures. And as far as I know, diplomacy can help preventing wars too. I saw no diplomacy in the comment. But once again, the commenter may not have intended to sound that way.
