Running anything modern out of warranty is a risky business. I'm a mechanic / workshop manager with nearly 40 years experience. Modern cars, and I'm taking last 15 years can be so complex and expensive to repair it's going to price some people out of motoring, or you just buy another dirt cheap car when it goes wrong.

@speaktothegeek you are highlighting a really valid point for EV ownership at the moment (as did EVM). I'm in Newport and considering Cleevely for my EV service / first MOT later this year, so looking forward to seeing how you get on. I had this on my e208. (Same car as the Corsa!). Car said unplug charging cable when there wasn’t one plugged in, then the same fault as you. It was the 12V battery losing charge. AA came and fixed it in 30 minutes!! Just disconnected the 12V battery, reconnected it, gave it a bit of charge and hey presto. AA said they get these regularly but should be fine. They did say get it checked by a main dealer but as it’s a company car I contacted my company team and they said leave it. No problems now for three months.

I've had a similar issue (like yours & ISuperTed's). Mine was the 12v battery at the end of it's life. A quick swap out sorted it out (£60 battery from Halfords). The 12v battery can through all sorts of wrror messages at you because the car basically forgets what's going on...

I don't have an EV but would it not be wise to switch off "auto updates" my brother has a corsa EV that had an issue after an update and had to take it in to Vauxhall to be sorted.... Updates have bricked an odd phone of mine... and manufacturer just says tough luck if it's out of warranty. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 3 месяца назад
There's no such concept of auto-updates or over-the-air updates for a Vauxhall. The software we're talking about here are core car components which can only be updated at a garage whilst plugged into specialist equipment. The only updates I could do myself to the car are to the entertainment system and navigation maps which is the same as pretty much any traditional car.

Fair enough. Honestly I think it would make me think twice about a second hand Corsa-e that's out of warranty too. Maybe in a couple of years once the issues are more well known then a Corsa would be a good buy, but right now the oldest Corsa-es are just landing in the used market and they're an unknown quantity. I've got another 2 years of finance left on mine so I don't have much choice but to keep it on the road!

I had exactly the same fault last May. Fortunately it was still under warranty and I was provided with a loan Corsa-e (on which we clocked up over 7k miles). I finally got it back from the dealer's in January, 7.5 months later, as usual with very little information about what had been replaced/updated. So far it seems to be OK. One complication I had was that the first MOT became due while it was at the dealer's, this meant that I had to SORN the car until it was fixed and MOT'd.

Interesting update Oliver. At least they seem to have found the probable cause. I'm curious though. Assuming that a software update does fix this, should that have been available to apply by owners? If not OTA then via their website. Thinking back to when we had the IONIQ, they make their updates available to be applied via SD card.
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 3 месяца назад
The way the legacy manufacturers design their cars (and I have been chatting to a relative who works for a major manufacturer) means that the various control units (like ECU, etc) are all on a single data network (CAN bus) which is isolated in most cases from the user-updatable components (like the infotainment). So they can offer OTA or downloadable updates for your infotainment and mapping, but you still need specialist equipment to push updates onto the myriad of components on the CAN bus. In order to provide OTA updates to those components, they'd specifically need to include some sort of co-ordination device or bridge that would receive the updates via IP connectivity, and then push that out to the specific component somehow on the CAN bus. That would be very expensive for them to deploy and could cause a lot of support issues too! Tesla have taken a very different approach which is why you can get OTA updates for almost every component in those cars.
@MartynDews
@MartynDews 3 месяца назад
@@SpeakToTheGeekTech Sounds familiar. CUPRA Born owner here so even though OTA support is a feature, in reality, for the reasons you state, it's not that straightforward. Legacy automakers have a lot to learn when it comes to software management.

What you need is a Brompton folding bike. I use mine regularly for things like you have done, on and off public transport or even popping to the shops. Easilly pops in any car boot. More reliable than an EV as well. My EV is 8 years old now, only done 40 k miles but the battery has degraded 33%
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 4 месяца назад
Wow that’s quite a degradation, a lot more than others I know of a similar age. Worst I know of first hand is down to 60% at 8 years and that’s an old Leaf
@stevezodiac491
@stevezodiac491 4 месяца назад
@SpeakToTheGeekTech Mine's a 30kwhr leaf. Trouble is all lithium ion batteries degrade with time and use cycles, even modern liquid managed batteries, with modern chemistries. 'Battery Life' channel's ID3 had 10% degradation after only 2 years and obviously his battery had half the use cycles mine had per distance driven, being twice the size of my battery.

I drive a Citroen diesel, willing to bet the 12V battery management unit software has become corrupted - usually due to low state of charge of the 12V battery. Will require either a new unit and a new software download or just a new software download from Stellantis.

We had a similar fault with our 2020 Corsa E except it refused to enter Drive and stayed in Park so wouldn't move. Was still in our 1 year used warranty so we had it recovered to the main dealer we bought it for them to sort. Took them about 2 months, a software update, a new wiring harness and a new AC compressor to fix it. They were waiting most of that time for an engineer from Vauxhall to visit and do a full diagnostic and tell them what was wrong - so that slow response problem is not exclusive to third parties repairs!

Yeah I'd seen it could be related to the AC compressor. Luckily mine wasn't locked in park.

What a massive pain! Though these sort of coms issues between the various computer modules are not an EV specific problem and can also happen on ICE vehicles - watch the latest episode of The Grand Tour to see Richard Hammond struggle with it on a DB9. I do wonder about the credibility of it being a software issue; why would it work okay for so many years and then suddenly have a problem?
@SpeakToTheGeekTech
@SpeakToTheGeekTech 4 месяца назад
Yeah I don’t think this issue is specific to EVs but I also don’t think a regular garage would give it the same level of attention
@garychivers6173
@garychivers6173 4 месяца назад
@SpeakToTheGeekTech I agree. Furthermore, a lot of independent garages simply could not afford to hold the diagnostic equipment/software to troubleshoot these kinds of issues for every single manufacturer. Hence why most will specialise in a specific manufacturer/group so they can invest in all the specialist tooling but still be in business. I wonder if we will see something similar to the rules that came in the mid 90s forcing a standard (OBD-II) connector and interface for ECUs expanded to include all communications and modules with in cars; that would enable smaller indie garages to be more competitive.

@@SpeakToTheGeekTech Ah. I can see the reasoning then. Strange that the MD's can't find a quick solution to a problem that is presumably common to all Stellantis group cars. We had a problem with our used '22 plate Kona. 1 week after buying it the charging flap wouldn't open which, as you can imagine, is a major issue on an EV. Got it into a local Hyundai dealer within a few days & it got fixed by the next day under warranty & they washed the car. Since then it's been fine🤞

The one thing I learnt with my Astra diesel was to keep its repairs within the Vauxhall service department. They're local, and maybe just in my case, but servicing was competitive, and repairs, especially electrical gremlins, were dealt with much more accurately and quickly and occasionally cheaper than RAC approved garages. Especially useful if the problem is onlybgoing to get referred to manufacturer anyway. Plus there is such a thing as manufacturer goodwill which youre not going to get going third party. Anyway, Im guessing you haven't got the car back yet which is annoying because my son in law justvhad the same issue with his Corsa EV. 😮

Bit of a spoiler here for part 2 which is coming soon, but as your son-in-law has the issue I feel I should mention this now! Take it to Vauxhall, they have a 'special fund' or something for fixing this error. Mine isn't fixed yet, going back and forth hence why part 2 hasn't been published! My guess is they'll be recalling the car soon...

Its not just an EV thing, its a general trend for the last 10 years that cars are more software controlled so if things go wrong in a sensor or the software its a lot harder for the ‘traditional’ garages to diagnose and fix them. My wife’s airbag warning light has been coming on, the garage have replaced the steering wheel module with the airbag cables three times now and its still come back again. Anyway, admit it Oli, the only REAL reason you wanted to go to Cheltenham was to be able to burn down town roads at 30mph….

I've just had a quick look and standard warranty is 3 years with what appears to be battery only for 8. I thought most cover the drive train inc the battery but I'm clearly wrong. As a quick comparison mg have the 7 year warranty which apparently you'd hope would cover all major components and Tesla cover the battery and drive unit for 8. Personally I'd be looking for something which covers the whole power\dfive train. This would make a good video in itself in comparing manufacturers warranties. Won't be buying a stellantis car if they just cover the battery.

This is Kia's warranty which seems quite comprehensive although they do state batteries will last upwards of 10 years or 100k miles erk! .....For electric cars, our 7-year warranty covers the: • Electric Motor • Gear Drive Unit (GDU) • Battery Pack (for repairs/replacements needed to return the capacity to at least 70%) • Electric Power Control Unit (EPCU) • On-Board Charger (OBC)
