Universal's Epic Universe is set to open in 2025, and it's already shaking up the theme park world. But how is Disney planning to fight back against this massive new competitor? Will Disney build a brand-new park, or do they have a more strategic approach in mind? In this video, I’ll break down Disney’s bold and calculated plan to outplay Epic Universe-without adding a new theme park to the mix.
We’ll explore Disney's timeline of exciting new projects, including the upcoming Monsters Inc. Land at Hollywood Studios, a Cars Land at Magic Kingdom, and major updates to Animal Kingdom. I’ll reveal how Disney is timing these big moves to keep guests coming back, even as Epic Universe dominates the headlines.
Are you ready for the ultimate theme park showdown? Watch now to find out how Disney plans to stay ahead in the battle for your vacation days.

I’ve never understood the whole, “I’m a huge Disney fan, so I’ve never visited Universal” trope. I’m a Disney Cast Member, always have been a Disney fan, but I’ve been to Universal in Orlando several times and I love it! It is possible to be fan of both franchises. Both places have their pros and cons, but they’re still great places to visit.

I can’t explain it for everyone but for me it’s simple, I’m not very interested in many of the themes and IPs that are picked, I physically don’t enjoy thrill rides and I’m very much into the aesthetics of Disney parks and from what I have seen it never seemed appealing to me, but as stated in this video the new park has peaked my interest, so it was never to prove a point other then they didn’t speak to me as a customer

@@ChienaAvtzon I live in SoCal. I grew up visiting both Disney and universal, when my family wanted to visit Orlando we stayed at disneyworld. Nobody in my family has interest in Harry Potter at all and my parents threw on islands of adventure on the trip. We didn’t do studios because we all felt it looked too similar to what we had in Hollywood. That day at islands of adventure was the most memorable and enjoyable day of our entire trip. This was also in 2018 before velocicoaster and hagrids which would have probably solidified it even higher if they had been open at the time. As someone who had done a Disney vacation almost every year for 16 years, I have to say our trip to Universal Orlando in 2023 was a much more enjoyable experience than our trip to Disney World in 2022. Hey Brickey, I've been a big fan for a while, I have been a WDW employee for over 30 years and know about WDW history. I encourage you one day to try the Universal Studios Resort here in Orlando, and here is my reasoning. As Disney has laid off hundreds of Imagineers over the years, Universal Creative has snatched them up, thank God. The X Imagineers were used to create the original Harry Potter attractions for Universal's Islands of Adventure after Disney refused to spend the money necessary to create such an elaborate Harry Potter Land. So much of what you see at Universal Orlando was created by Imagineers. This same group of created geniuses are currently working on attractions to add into the existing Universal parks here in Florida. My other thing I want ot share is Universal will offer 2 and 3 day packages that will include a one day addmission into Epic Universe, and the other days will be used in their existing parks, for the time being there will not be a single day pass for Epic Universe. Feel free to ask me anything about WDW. Keep up your great work!
@MrMac1138
@MrMac1138 13 дней назад
Most of those Imagineers ended up leaving Universal because they have really thwarted their creative. Also Disney was not against spending on Harry Potter - they did not want to pay royalties to both WB and JK Rowling. Disney was unwilling to work with WB and license their designs - they wanted to work with Rowling directly and avoid film tie ins. This made Universal beholden to WB designers and is one of the reason why most of the former WDI employees ended up leaving Universal. BTW, many Imagineers also helped with IoA after Animal Kingdom got cut back. Many of the ideas of Lost Continent came from those that had worked on the Beastly Kingdomme for AK. However Universal was not willing to spend on building an original coaster concept, so they used a standard B&M inverted design instead on Dueling Dragons. They have done a similar thing with Epic outside of DK - which has been having issues launching in Japan due to design flaws. Universal is requiring a 3 day package to enter Epic at first and will not allow annual passholder or single day tickets to start. They did the same thing with IoA and it caused it to launch poorly. So that is true - no single day passes, but they have done this before and it backfired. The biggest issue with Universal is they just don't get the details. Both Velocicoaster and Hagrid's have major flaws in their queue and load design because UC does not listen to operations - so the capacity of Hagrid's hovers near 1100 an hour instead of 1700, as it should. It's because the load is inefficient because they felt the conveyer load was a good idea instead of traditional stations. They also have not learned. I have heard Operations does not want Epic open until late next year or delayed until 2026 because there are so many issues with the rides that need to be worked out. Even now, Mario Kart closes A LOT every day in Japan and Hollywood. The animatronics for Monsters Unleashed fail frequently and there isn't really a B show for when they fail - which likely will be at least 50% of the time. Universal is cutting budget ahead of Epic's launch because they now feel it will not meet expectations, so the other parks will pay for it with decreased operational hours and less staff. Honestly, the stuff I hear is not good for Epic Universe. I have a feeling the park won't hit its stride until 2027 and will endure 2 years of bad press as the Universal Parks bleed attendance.

@@MrMac1138the ticket info for epic is all rumor. No one knows anything about ticketing outside of universal.
@MrMac1138
@MrMac1138 12 дней назад
@@johnshoemakerpbc Comes from good sources and I have heard it as well. The entire point of Epic Universe is to get an extra day at Universal parks from people visiting. The problem is surveys Universal has been running indicate there's little interest in that - that people will just do IoA and Studios on one day and Epic on another - or not visit either legacy park. This thwarts the entire purpose of the park. There is actually a contingent inside Universal that advised against building Epic Universe and instead wanted to put Nintendo into Studios and just enhance the current parks before considering a third gate. If Epic Universe fails to increase overall Universal attendance by at least 50%, it is quite likely the management that advocated to build it will be removed and a new strategy formulated. The issue is NBC-Universal is not going to want to invest another $1B+ to fix the parks. Do not be surprised if they label Epic Universe as a premium park and expect at least $200 per day there and require a separate annual pass that will cost $1000 just for Epic Universe. That is the current discussion to try to make up for the expected revenue shortfall against expectations.

@@goorange20 - Epic Universe has at least five roller coasters already. The expansion pad in Dark Universe is for a boat ride, which is something the park needs. Super Nintendo World is for whatever Nintendo develops, as it is a licensed area. Isles of Berk does not have an expansion pad, because it has the most rides and a theater. Which leaves the massive expansion pad in the Wizarding World section behind the facade of the French Ministry, which is unlikely to be wasted on a roller coaster. As for the extra portal, do not expect Universal to use that for an IP they do not actually own. Only the Wizarding World is worth that type of investment for them, as it is a proven commodity.

One of the points in which I disagree with you is, the assumption that Disney is going to complete any projects in a timely manner. They aren't. It took them five years to complete Tron, a roller coaster they already had the blue blueprints for since they built one in Japan. A company that turned parts of Epcot center into a giant crater, and five years later they reopened it… and it was nothing more than landscaping with failed lighting. The leadership of Bob Iger has been a catastrophic failure. When epic universe opens, I think Disney is seriously going to get their clocks cleaned. The big unknown factor is how aggressive is Universal going to be in the Orlando theme park space. I mean, building Epic Universe (the 7th or 8th big park, depending if you count SeaWorld) was a very bold move. A huge investment in a mature market. It signals a high level of commitment...which would suggest big updates are likely coming to USF and IOA. But how big? Tinkering? Or...what if they spend a few billion to massively remake those parks? It will be interesting to see Universal's next moves and how far ahead they telegraph them. Likewise, I think Disney also has big possible moves it is holding back. A lot is going to happen over the next decade in Orlando! As a Disneyland fan, I'm feeling left out! Where disney takes 4 plus years to make one attraction. Universal already has plans to implement pokemon and zelda at ioa and studios and also make a new outdoor coaster to replace rocket. If disney continues to take that amount of time to create new experiences and universal doesn't stop they may find them selfs in trouble for the amount of hype universal is creating for new experiences. IMO, absolutely nothing Disney has ever done touches the Harry Potter “lands” in Orlando…and I’m not even a big Harry Potter fan. (Note: I haven’t been to the Hollywood version.) Disney has severely tainted not only the Star Wars brand (I’m curious how or if they’ll ever recover) but their own company brand. (Marvel may be poised for a comeback, however - TBD.) What Disney has going for it are princesses, great stories (at least prior to the past 5-10 years), great music, & TONS of nostalgia. But the park cleanliness, cast friendliness, story-telling, creative culture, & overall quality aren’t like it used to be. Disney is slipping. The fact that a 30-ish year old ride like Indiana Jones may be the best (or top 3) attraction in Disneyland is all you need to know. Additionally, it’s crazy to think that the 2 Disney parks in Cali offer no big, day-time productions is astounding to me. Having said that, I absolutely LOVE the Guardians ride at EPCOT…& that gives me hope that they can still find a way to do great things.

That is why Disney can afford the laid back approach while Universal goes full steam ahead. Disney has made reactionary moves to Universal ever since they fumbled the Harry Potter IP. It is great for Orlando, I am not complaining. I am excited to see this Villains land they cooked up in response to Dark Universe.

It's great to hear the creative employees in Orlando get along! However, there is a long history of Universal and Disney battling it out from their HQs, from the dueling studio parks in Orlando to the scuttled Burbank Backlot Project. Former Imagineer Jim Shull recently discussed how he and colleagues used to ride Universal attractions over and over hoping the ride would break down, work lights would come on, and they could get behind-the-scenes how-are-they-doing-it? photos. So when fans of either company discus the competition, it's fueled by that real history. But, again, very nice that employees have respect for each other and can come together as a professional community. It's like in sports, always great to see athletes shake hands before and after a game.

I don’t think Disney can rely on nostalgia and IP that heavily anymore. 1. they have/want to destroy nostalgic parts of the park (rivers of america, splash mountain) for older generations 2. Millennials are the demographic that’s emotionally attached to the classic Disney renaissance movies but older or younger demographics don’t care as much (from my experience) 3. Don’t underestimate the nostalgia around Nintendo and the Wizarding World I think in this day and age Universal has more relevant IPs or at least competitive IPs.

The thing is that universal isn’t just going to rest after epic universe opens. Just next year it’s rumored that universal will shut down the Simpson to bring Pokémon which is IP than half of the ones that are coming to Disney world and that will probably be ready by the time cars opens by the time villains opens we will probably be already seeing an epic universe expansion. I think Disney should have focused on giving only one of its parks (probably Hollywood studios) all these major additions instead of hurting 3 of its 4 parks since they’re going to be filled with walls up and attractions shut down for 4 years during a time their competition is coming in strong

If you do enter a Universal park, start with Japan its the best one. Epic Universe is going to be a game changer, but I feel its going to be more a threat to Universal's other theme parks in Orlando. Universal knows this, it is rumored they are making you buy park hopper tickets if you want to go to Epic Universe. When Harry Potter came we were having some of theses same conversions about Universal pulling ahead. Universal did not pull ahead instead the market expanded and Disney grew. A rising tide floats all boats. Disney will be fine if they keep the expansions coming.

It is cool to hear your take on this topic. Universal will combat the potential cannibalism of their other parks by requiring package tickets to attend Epic Universe. Basically, to attend Epic Universe you’ll have to buy a multi day/park ticket to the Universal Parks. Most American tourist will only have enough time and funds to attend the Universal Parks. They will skip WDW in 2025 and beyond, and return to WDW only when it has some magical experience to offer or when WDW is less expensive than going to the Universal Parks. Epic Universe and the other Universal Parks will be the draw for more than 4 years, because they already have plans to keep expanding. WDW cannot keep up, they just need to minimize their losses. WDW needs to deliver on all of the new experiences/attractions that they highlighted during D23 quickly and without compromise, because Universal Parks have demonstrated that they can and will deliver on their promises, are willing to spend the money, and are playing the long game. Just look at Super Nintendo World and the Fast and Furious coaster at their Hollywood Studios park.

If Disney wants to stay as relevant as they used to they need to change a lot at the parks. Stay true to the concept art would be a first step. If you’re a Disney-Fan you will go to Disney no matter what but all other people will choose what’s a better option in their eyes. Disney needs to make this Villains Land as quick as possible and it needs to be perfect. In the last few years Disney disappointed people in expectations. Disney relies too much on IPs and the Disney brand. The rides should work without an IP. Like you mentioned with “How to train a dragon” you want to see that land because it will be something you want to see and experience not because it has this IP. I don’t care for this IP at all, but to see flying dragons and the details within the land, I’m all in.

Yeah Brickey, Disney realizes what the stakes are. They realize they ran off a ton of patrons with their price gouging and getting rid of free perks to make you pay for them (parking for resort guests, paying for fastpass, no more airport shuttles). They realized that poor maintenance, cleanliness and customer service, forced virtual queues and wait times propped up by cost saving staff reductions was not a way to endear themselves to guests. Confusing guests with complicated apps that frequently crash is just icing on the cake. The cataclysmic drops in attendance and guest satisfaction aren’t easily reversed. You may have regular patrons at a restaurant for years but serve them a couple of bad meals and good luck ever seeing them again. The Disney brand is at an all time low. Disney has always been more popular for small children while teens preferred the Universal Parks. However, with Disney struggling to maintain older IPs while failing to create popular new ones, fandom is waning. Look at the numbers for the Disney Channel to see kids don’t watch it anymore. Older Disney parents try to pass their love for Disney to a social media generation that doesn’t care because they don’t watch movies and don’t watch TV. Streaming has been a colossal failure with huge debt while they tried to squeeze all they could from park goers to try and subsidize. Disney world can’t build anything in under 5 years. Their latest permit to the State of Florida to fill in the Rivers of America just got kicked back. Instead of adding knew attractions to parks to increase capacity the just want to tear down existing attractions and replace them instead because it’s cheaper and profit always trumps customer experiences in modern Disney. In five years Disney World will be a shell of what it is now. You think these rushed plans at D23 will matter when clearly the were just panic induced reactions. To think that Disney World will ever be what it once was is pure delusion. You must be smokin bricks or brickeys of Copium to believe that. RIP Epcot. RIP Hollywood Studios. RIP Animal Kingdom. . . . oh what could have been.

I understand that you are a pro-Disney channel, but this sounds a bit overenthusiastic even for you. Disney is a corporation with massive debt. It's "current ratio" is in red flag territory - hence the reason its stock is moribund. Whatever Disney does to its parks has to be done with loans, only increasing the debt problem. Without increasing capacity, Disney will be spending money only to retain the customers it already has in a never-ending competition with Universal- a bad R.O.I. strategy. Universal does not have this problem and Epic Universe is ALL increased capacity. They can keep hammering away at their long-in-the-tooth IP's, but I don't see how they can compete.

Love your videos, man. Appreciate your insights. But I gotta say - I think you’re giving Disney too much credit here. They’ve been cutting corners lately, rolling back perks, implementing up-charges, and diluting the park experience. Universal has some very strong IP with Nintendo, Harry Potter, and the Universal monsters (Universal is a mecca for horror enthusiasts around Halloween time, which Dark Universe may be able to tap into year-round, and what Disney’s Villains Land will be competing against), and I have to say - domestically, Universal’s latest attractions like Velocicoaster and Hagrid’s Motorbike coaster have been far better than anything Disney has put out. I just got back from Fantasy Springs in Tokyo, and while I absolutely loved it, I also had to admit that I couldn’t really see the U.S. parks ever delivering on something of similar quality because the will just isn’t there - they know they can get away with giving domestic parkgoers less and changing them more. I love a lot of the concepts they shared at D23, but I question how well they will actually execute those ideas (case in point - Galaxy’s Edge is a far cry from what I had envisioned when it was first announced). I think if Universal successfully pulls off Epic Universal at the same caliber as some of their other recent offerings, and Disney skimps on some of these newer projects, it will be the deathknell of their industry dominance. And if they ever add Hyrule Castle to a Universal park - game over. Universal’s symbolic dominance will be all too apparent.

Very interesting take on this "battle", if you look at it in "lands" not parks it does a decent balancing act. Epic-Celestial Park, Dark Universe, Super Nintendo, How to Train a Dragon, and Wizarding World-Paris so 5 additional lands, with expansion pads to roughly double some of those areas. Disney's response-Tropical Americans, Car Lands, Monster's Inc, and Villains land, so 4 'lands' but not really additional lands most are "area re-imagineering". When we talk about WDW it is normally, 'could we skip a park or just do a lighter day at a park?'. We do have a soft scheduled trip to Universal in 2026 all three parks, Epic looks like a 2-day park with 2 lands per day, Universal Orlando and Islands of Adventure are each 1 day a piece. With a normal trip of 7 days, that leaves 6 days for parks with at least 4 taken up by Universal, maybe we squeeze in a Disney day, but that could easily be visiting some resorts and not necessarily a theme park day. The real interesting thing will be to see how much Epic Universe impacts Universal Studios Hollywood's Super Gameboy Land (pun due to the size limitations) as larger more expansive area will be on the other coast. But Universal has hinted at adding things to their other parks as well, Zelda would fit in nicely with Islands of Adventure. Either way this looks to be an incredible decade of development in the theme park world.

I dont disagree with what they will do but this seems very optimistic and not taking into account universal’s plans past epic universe. Firstly they seem to be rolling out tickets that make ppl buy universal and islands tickets in order to get epic tickets for atleast the opening period (id say to the end of the first year) so if someone isn’t going to epic but has a ticket they are more likely to go to another universal park than spend more money to go to a Disney park. Also I expect these to stick around in a discount way past the first year. Secondly in making epic universe they are moving their backstage areas to the epic universe plot of land which will free up space for them to expand and upgrade their current parks. Knowing universal I don’t expect them to be on a Disney timeline when making those changes. Thirdly they have expansion plots for epic universe which I expect them to focus more on once they have upgraded their OG parks. Forth…ly… idk lol they have space to make another park or two which I would be very surprised if they did not take advantage of. (Now what Disney will do once Uni starts making parks to push others out the week is yet to be seen but I hope they’ll compete more than they have been recently)

Universal is going to drain a great number of Disney’s cast members next year. If you think the lines are long at WDW, imagine the whole place having 25% less cast members? It is not like Disney will offer more money to hang on to them.

You are assuming that Epic won't utilize their "future project" space during this time. Or updates to Island of Adventure or Universal studios.

i don't understand why a fifth gate is better, vs expanding the existing parks, for either disney, or for us, as guests.

For a lot of people, they need to pick between Universal or Disney while on vacation. We've often gone to Disney for 5 days and completed with a trip to Universal. Now Universal becomes a destination where you can plan your vacation around and maybe squeeze in One day at Disney. Let's not forget that Disney will destroy the backbone of Magic Kingdom to build something nobody has asked for. They seem to think they are the Apple of the entertainment world where they will give people what they don't know they want like Jobs famously said. Except, Disney would do MUCH MUCH better if they listened to what its fans want.

Universal already has more parks in the plans for rapid expansion. They bought another 1,200 acres in orlando.

Well, workers in England get an entire month of vacation from day one. Not one week, or maybe two. Or being lucky to have three if you're at the same job for 10 years. So yeah, they have the time. And if they're going to fly across the pond, I don't blame them for staying a while.

I like your optimism but disagree. Fundamentally, Disney has lost its “AAA” family status. It’s been fading over the last 10 years and families no longer trust them with their children as much. If universal focuses on the family friendly content, they have this opportunity to take market share permanently from Disney. I saw Disney start to fail when they remodeled the Disneyland hotel and that seems to have been a permanent change in standard and direction ever since. Let’s hope you’re right, but if not then at least the stiff competition allows for lots more options for everyone right? It’s a “win win” for the consumer?

Wouldn't it be great if you got the actual point? You revisit the top twelve times but never really resolve the issue. All of this is conjecture, with very little evidence.

I don’t think there’s a better experience that will give you an appreciation for the immersively themed lands of Disney than going to Universal Studios Hollywood and experiencing their bland steel box structures that house their rides and queues firsthand. I get loving Disney that much, but you gotta know how or why they are in comparison by your own experience. It’s like saying Coca Cola is hands down better than Pepsi (which it is) without even trying Pepsi. You should at least try it first. And like Coke over Pepsi you’ll get why Disney is better and have more to take away from the experience. But those Florida parks are also a large improvement too, Islands of Adventure specifically

What?!? You’ve never been to Universal?!? Brickey, honey, you’ve got to go! I think you would love it! (I’ve only been to Orlando but it’s special!) Go soon! Make videos! ❤😂

2028. If Universal keeps their Epic Universe ticketing strategy, people won't be able to go to 3 Disney parks and 1 day at Epic. I believe you can't buy an Epic single day ticket. You have to at least buy a 2 day ticket, including one of the other parks for 1 day, and the 2nd day at Epic. I don't know the details of all the rules or if it's a temporary thing for the initial rush of demand.

Put all the new attractions in the studio parking lot do not destroy any attractions, especially attractions that are always full of guests

2 or 3 years for Disney World to build a NEW ride 😂 Frozen at Epcot took almost 3 from 10/2014 to 6/2016 and it was just a retheme. The Moana fountain walk took 4 years! Universal Orlando built Transformers in 9 months that included demolition of a building. I do not know what kool aide you are drinking, but even Universals Illumination and DreamWorks movies have been out performing Disney and Pixar. Also you seem to feel that WDWs greed with no trams, park pass, Genie, etc will have no affect at all. My own sister says she never thought her kids would like Universal more than Disney but they have the IP that they know and not everything is a paid add on or upcharge. Look at Galaxy Edge vs Wizarding World at Universal anyone can watch the wand show or buy one and wear a wizard robe. At WDW you have to pre pay with credit card or debit card 24 hours before and if you buy a Jedi robe you can not wear it in the park. The wand does immusive stuff in the Wizarding World where the light saber is the same one you can get at any store, even Target. Greed is what is ruining WDW. Look at the backlash between Universal announcements vs Disney. One company seems to actually care about the guest experience and never went 30 years without adding a new attraction that did not close an old one like Disney with Tron at Magic Kingdom

I think your right and tbh why would Disney build a new park when the current parks have areas that are well over due refurbishment.

Yes. This! Refine and improve your existing product. If you are a big company, you should not cannibalize your own sales with expansions vs. expenses that dilute your overall income. TSR is a good example of that.

You do know unversal is bringing in Zelda and pokemon to the old parks right. Kids don't want to see the mouse. There going to he at Orlando Airport seeing huge Pikachus and thell he pissed when they can't find him.

I have to say you are living in a fantasy world (or perhaps a fantasy theme park?) if you think Disney will be opening their new Monsters Inc. land only two years after they start construction in 2027! It took Disney 4 years just to re-theme Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou! Your predictions are Wildly optimistic given Disney’s recent track record!
@HeyBrickey
@HeyBrickey 9 дней назад
@@scottroe5008 haha. I hear ya man. Tiana’s was a vanity project, these projects are tier to competition. They built two SWGE and a massive parking garage in inside of 4 years. When they spend the money they can get the job done.

27,000 acres at WDW, 1100 with the parks and 7500 in conservation. And they don't use the remaining 18,000+ acres, no they replace, they reskin, they pave over, but rarely increase capacity. That is why the AECOM report last month showed them still tracking 14% behind 2019 attendance (the in between years were even worse) and that was with the MK 50th and the TWDC 100th anniversaries. Oops.

Universal is not stopping after Epic Universe, there is already rumors that they might start on expansions after the park already opens. Luigi's Mansion, Creature of the Black Lagoon, Lord of the freakn Rings. Also, the other parks will be able to close some of their backstage areas since they moved to the the Epic Universe back lot area freeing up even more space. Zelda is rumored for the Lost Continent, Pokemon in the main park, etc... I doubt Disney will be able to keep up all things considered. So while they spend the next five years trying to catch up with Epic Universe, Universal will be several steps ahead, AND Universal has more room for a whole new theme park! They are going to loose some serious market share in Florida, and they cant seem to stop pissing off their own fans. Good luck.....

Interesting timeline...but don't forget, Universal has lots of rumored improvements to all 3 parks over the next few years. So it will also be the case that some will be choosing between, say, Monsters Inc and Zelda. Or Cars and the highest selling IP of all time, Pokemon.
