Many foreigners would be confused about the difference between China, Japan and South Korea. I as a Chinese, is very responsible, said here is the culture of Japan and South Korea are of great China, Japan's main absorbed the culture of the tang dynasty in China, and based on this reference formed their own culture in Japan, and South Korea in the ancient times are greatly influenced by China's Ming dynasty, basically be the dependency of the Ming dynasty, but unlike Japan, South Korea will not admit their culture comes from China, or even distort history rob Japan original Chinese culture (modern Korean history is only seventy years or so), it is also the culture in China and Japan are very antipathy against South Korea. I hope this helped you. Good night

Thank you for taking this video. 💕 I find that many people who like to scream "cultural appropriation" are usually the people who have no idea what culture is all about. Many cultures are based on the adaptation of traditions taken from foreign sources, to do so is a tradition itself. To force society to "stay within the lines" is prohibiting the growth of a culture and creation of new traditions. Even if you're putting on a feathered headpiece for Halloween you still have to have some knowledge and admiration for a culture to want to replicate it. There are boundries that can be crossed, black-face, for instance, but there is a major difference between mockery and admiration. Those who are unable to differentiate the two have no business telling others they are culturally appropriating anything. I love several different "ethnic" and/or "traditional" styles. Some pieces are just so beautiful, I can't but help feel just as beautiful wearing them. I feel like such an awful person when people (usually other white folks) scream "Cultural Appropriation" at me when I'm wearing one of my much beloved vintage kimonos. Sometimes, I'll go all out full traditional, right down to the tiniest detail. I feel that the love, attention, and knowledge it takes to properly wear such attire is honoring tradition and the culture it originated from. To add my own style and flare to a piece is to do as cultures have done since the dawn of time. Show admiration for a different culture, take away what is loved from a land and keep its memory close to the heart, but still show love for home.
@nimkati5627
@nimkati5627 5 лет назад
Japan is actively exporting kimonos and even organized counter-protests after american SJWs tried to protest against appropriation of Japanese culture which was very ignorant , patronizing and harmful. If someone accuses you in cultural appropriation, say that it's the culture that is appropriating you.

Sometimes people talk about cultural appropriation because some people use someones traditional garmet as a fashion trend without getting to know the history. My friend is indian and when she wore a saree outside, someone made fun of her. But when a white woman wears it, they get praise. That is why some people still use the term, because of things like that
@lilmamagc
@lilmamagc 4 года назад
the feathered head dress is always a no no though
@coolthinghere6853
@coolthinghere6853 4 года назад
@@mendingwall3823 yeah, a lot of people protest without really knowing why they should, and when they get into arguments they dont know when an instance is appropriation and when its not as for the kimono discourse, it was actually a number of japanese-americans who were concerned about it, as they are the ones who have to deal with the 'exotic' racism that comes from non japanese people wearing it as costume or not taking time to learn about kimono customs ect the general rule of thumb is: if its being shared by a person from the culture, as in this video, its fine! if its being made and sold, or is something being taught by someone from outside the culture (which often comes w glaring/racist errors) is a clear no no, bc that is taking the opportunity for a member of that culture to do it with the right sensitivity (if necessary)

@@diariohetaliano1 isn't this "cultural appropriation" thing confined to America? This is such a nonsense. People have always loved when someone else embraces their culture. Every country is literally exporting its culture. Why can you use Chinese smartphones, but not Chinese clothing? China is a wealthy and influential superpower that like any other country in the world is trying to increase its soft power through spreading of the culture. China is not a small endangered tribe that needs protection from outsiders. Did you know that In 2015 Japan organized a counter-protest after american SJWs tried to protest against "cultural appropriation of Japanese culture". Kimono industry was trying to expand outside of Japan, and they basically destroyed its chances in a very arrogant and patronizing manner. No need to say that the Japanese deeply were offended. By the way, SJWs already declared that learning a language is cultural appropriation too. They literally say that learning Spanish in the US is offensive to Hispanic people.
@diariohetaliano1
@diariohetaliano1 5 лет назад
Nim Kati I’m afraid of that because of social media, I may be attacked by those people or idk, irl here in Mexico you’re right, maybe the “cultural appropriation “ thing isn’t like that but they do make fun of you because you’re the “chinita” “la Puca” “chin chon lin Lon”, they make fun of everything even themselves lol. And I didn’t know that even learning a language was considered like that, omg that’s just so wrong... With the globalisation and everything it shouldn’t be considered wrong and it always should be done with respect. I guess is only going to cringe when is like “koreaboos” ??? Idk tho

Though it is important you understand what you're wearing and what contexts it would be bad to wear it if there are any. Like if you intentionally wear a specific store's style staff clothes (without store name/text on it) and then go to that store and loiter, you're a jerk, while if you wear it as Halloween costume or just in general that's fine. If you go to a normal funeral dressed like Death, you're a jerk, at Halloween or costume parties fun. It is important to consider the overall context just to make sure you don't accidentally do something in poor taste. Thankfully it is usually in specific formal occasions that you have to think harder, and not daily life. Though if you wear a specific profession/role's clothes as casual clothes, you are gonna get weirder looks than if you're wearing casual traditional clothes (that suit the weather), no matter if you dress like a modern cop, a Buddhist monk, or an Olympian weightlifter.

Well those who scream the loudest typically are ones that know the least. We seem to be in a knee-jerk society. Which seems to know little without putting things inside the proper context. Komodo culture for instance in Japan is a dying art form. One that is not all that embraced by the younger generation. One that the Japanese themselves would admit to almost embarrassingly. Anything that shares in the tradition in a respectful dignified way is encouraged not discouraged. But some windbags seem to not know the difference lol. That music though...I want to put it on my relaxation station, both on my Pandora AND my RU-vid relaxation list...I imagine the song playing while there are many pictures of nature. 😋😎...I'm tired! 😴... Also, I like the beginning where all the girls were twirling in the wind like Ballerinas in Hanfu...This sounds super girly, but not...I have a couple long flowing skirts and when the wind hits them and the trail out behind you, you start feeling like a Bada$$ warrior princess. 😋😎...Is that weird? I'M WEIRD! 🤣... I just imagined the fight scene in the movie KILL BILL where they are sword fighting in Hanfu in the snow and flowers...OR, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON fight scenes on the trees. 😎... Cute video! I like the part where everyone was describing the Hanfu and how wearing this style of clothes made them feel! That was cool! Looks like soft fabric! I like soft fabrics! 😎

Hey! I absolutely adore han-style clothing and im looking further into it. I just have one question now: is it ok for me to wear something inspired by hanfu? Im far too afraid to wear the real thing because i don't want to stand out too much. Thus i think i would be more comfortable in something containing some of the hanfu elements instead of wearing hanfu. Would that be frowned upon/considered disrespectful?
@dinghuang4639
@dinghuang4639 3 года назад
you do not need to wear the whole set of hanfu if you think that is too eye-catching. some pieces can be combined with modern clothes. For example, Jiao Ling, a cross collar hanfu top, can be worn as a shirt, paired with modern pants/skirts/shorts, Or the Ma Mian skirt, can be paired with a modern T-shirt or blouse. There are also clothes designed with han-style/han elements. Some Chinese even pair hanfu with lolita clothes. So you can be as creative as you want. As other comments said, Chinese people would not be offended as long as the wearer do not make fun of the clothes

I believe if some wants to ware ethnic/ traditional clothing of another country/colture and they want to do it respectfully I believe that’s good, go for it!! I do also know it can be hard sometimes to do it respectfully especially if knowing and exposer to said group is limited. I started waring kimono around 10 years ago, I couldn’t always afford to buy them off line or from a store in person. I used movies, books, Facebook, RU-vid and the internet for information on how to ware kimono properly and so on, even after around 10 years of kimono wearing and loving traditional Japanese coulter, I still have a lot to learn, I made many mistakes and I know I will continue to do so because I am not a expert, nor do I have access to shuch knowledge/ firsthand experience. I live in a small town , and I don’t have much money, so for me going to japan and learning it all first hand is next to impossible, as is moving to San Francisco, or New York City, or Denver Colorado, or even getting into some college where I could study this. I guess to make a long story short, I believe if you want to ware clothes of a different culture/group and your doing it to the best of your ability and have respect for the culture it comes from and its people then go ahead and it, if your truly passionate about it and have the means to prosue it, do it!! Don’t be too hard on your self or others who are at a different place In there culture al loving and cultural colothes wearing jouny then you. Much love

I was gifted a Hanfu dress when I stayed with a host family. I would like to wear it out in America since I do not want it to just sit in my closet. I want to put it to good use and it’s super comfy and brings back memories. However I do not know if doing so will be cultural appropriation. Would it be disrespectful?

I think its sooo beautiful ❤ also the jewelry, hair and makeup styles. I would love to try but i'm really scared to offend anyone. ..That people think that I disrespect the culture ore something like that. I've seen how much criticism and hate people get for wearing hairstyles from black culture (I mean the people that talking about it and showing there knowledge about the culture respectfully) I mean I would not care if people from other countries would wear anything traditional from my country🤷‍♀️ somehow it's sometimes so difficult to know if it's a bad thing to do ore not.

Dear yumi King I really loved your video. I hope to someday be able to wear hanfu although I am kinda afraid to since I am a half German half American ( with Irish roots wich gives me super pale skin and Red hair the perfect Irish example) of getting looked at funny for wearing one and also I am unsure of the colouring I should go for I found a few I really liked online maybe you could give me tips and what you think would be good colours for me

Usually yes, just stay away from religious outfits, and try to be reasonable by not wearing clothes that don't suit your weather. And please please educate yourself about how you care for and maintain whatever garb you buy/make! For some types of clothes (e.g. genuine kimonos), you even have to fold them in a special way when you put them away. And while hopefully it is obvious to you, but protein based clothes (wools, silks etc) shouldn't be washed with the same detergents that are for cellulose fabrics (cotton etc). Leather items is one of the materials people usually mistreat, too.

All you ladies look great. Of course you should wear Hanfu if you want to. Not only clothes, but all elements of all cultures in the world should be enjoyed by all people. Chinese life is much richer with classical music, durian, brandy, pizza. Other peoples should enjoy all that China has to offer, including Hanfu.
