In 1987 i left the employ of the US government (USMC) in 2001 I was on the ground in Port au Prince to assist a team of missionaries to refurbish an orphanage, at that time, the Police were less professional than the police in Panama. Basically 1 guy with a uniform shirt a $1500 automatic rifle and grenades, 3 or 4 “deputies” without the uniform or rifle, but the deputies had machetes and clubs. That was the state of policing 23 years ago. The Palace only had electricity for part of the day, life was very hard for the everyday citizens. The kids in the orphanage had not been to the beach in 11 years, and the beach was 6 miles away.

Haiti had a slave uprising and they fought the french. A slave leader became king and the french left them alone and abondoned the island.that was how vicious the uprising was. That was late 1700s early 1800s. So this is not colonial. The people in charge got to positions of power and were so corrupt they became despots. As a result the population got stuffed. The only way to survive was as part of gangs.

Having worked in Haiti since 1998 I have seen it all as you reported. Your assessment is spot on save for one item. Real Estate is expensive. The diaspora refuse to sell cheaply and equally have seen it all. Rulers come and go so they wait and sell high. That aside your thoughts on US aid and how it is ineffective is absolutely correct. One has to only examine Bill Clinton’s aid package where he sent USAID rice into Haiti. “Free” rice destroyed the rice farming.

A politician visited a village in Haiti after a devastating hurricane. Upon arrival, he asked what their needs were. “We have 2 basic needs, sir,” replied the villager. “Firstly, we have a hospital, but there's no doctor.” On hearing this, the politician whipped out his phone, and after speaking for a while, he reassured the village leader that the doctor would be there the next day. Our public Healthcare it's being overwhelmed by them receiving care without paying any taxes. At one point they gotta take responsibility of all the problems they had due to their lack of education and any sort of planning. When over half the population lacks a birth certificate there's no possible way to plan anything when you're not even sure how many citizens you have, it became evident after the earthquake that showed there's loads of casualties that don't have any kind of ID. Haiti was built on blood running through the streets like water. It has been an intractable problem since its' inception. Eventually things get so bad that an outside power swoops in to try to impose order, not for the Haitian's sake - but because their dysfunction affects so many neighboring areas. For over two centuries now, Haiti has been dysfunctional at best, an absolute failure at worst. Billions of dollars in equipment, aid, training, foodstuffs, materials. Millions of hours of charity work and volunteers. And with an ever present, outstretched hand demanding more, more, more, more, more. Haiti will never be a success. The only people who believe otherwise are champagne socialists and billionaire celebrities that can afford to take beautiful pictures from the large, luxurious, and very well-guarded resorts. And have never seen the mountains of garbage and violence. These people cannot be governed with anything but an iron fist and the ever-present threat of force, which they will resent. No outside power wants to take on that burden. They cannot be left to their own devices or things get so horrific that disease, butchery and starvation runs absolutely rampant and a perpetual humanitarian crisis. A bottomless pit for foreign aid to be squandered into.

Wiki = a good place to start as long as we remember to go the listed sources and read those before deciding on the efficacy of the wiki article Rick's friend needs to restudy Germany after the Versailles treaty - Germany never repaid their debt as initially figured, and they were finally forgiven the vast unpaid balance, which was greater by double what they did pay. I'm thinking he didn't mention that because that may be too much info for a video blogcast

Interesting discussion. Especially as I am in Haiti at the moment. I'm in a safe part of the country away from Port au Prince. I'm working at a little clinic. Nevermind me. Several thoughts. First, slavery on the island was awful far beyond what happened in the American south for example. The Haitians are justifiably proud of throwing out the French. Spin it however you want but there is no denying the French indemnity hamstrung Haitian development. Also the French did deforest Haiti. Their camps are still here in the mountains. They sent in logging teams to log the mountains to "collect the remainder of the debt". Again, don't believe me? I can show you the camps. The Haitians would love the fix to be a Haitian solution. IMO the Haitians do not have the strength to get rid of the gangs. The gangs are currently destroying Port. They say the are fighting the elite. But that is a clear lie. The problem with letting it be a Haitian solution is hundreds of thousands will starve long before that happens. The only role I see for a foreign intervention would be to secure the ports, airports, and roads. After that the Haitian police and military needs to be rebuilt. I repeat, I don't think the Haitians can do that. At least not without hundreds of thousands starving with no were to go and no options. Not all these people are savage cannibals deserving of their fate. Most are good people trying to survive. 10 years ago things were finally starting to look up, but the gangs who were controlled by the Haitian elite. The problem now is that the gangs have slipped their leash.

What's interesting is the vast majority of Haitians do not want a foreign intervention, but many would now say they see no other option. Haiti's military is very small and the police are overwhelmed. The gangs have all the guns. El Salvador at least had a military that was stronger than the gangs. The Haitians I know want to work, want to earn money, but for that they need security. Again I don't see an all Haitian solution happening without hundreds of thousands starving first.

The only way it would work is for Haiti to become a colony/territory, of another country

If you read the history, I vote for the French fixing it. They messed it up with onerous debt payments for many years.

That's so unintelligent 😊 You're the same people who think that White people in America should pay black people in America reparations.😅 That is so utterly ridiculous, so what France may have paid a bunch of money well. They've paid that off literally. Decades ago, no, it's. Corruption, they don't have. Have decent leaders the same thing you see in South Africa. Have, what are you gonna blame that on the British for leaving that's ridiculous. It's called self responsibility and you and people like the people and Hades have never had to be responsible for themselves. You're a bunch of tools going around the world. That's the problem

Money isn't the problem. We proved that after the earthquake. They had enough money to choose any future they desired and chose poorly. They have cannibals for heavens sake. This is a culture issue.
