Just layer after layer of sounds and music on top of the drumming. Absolutely hypnotic. A girlfriend introduced me to this in 1972. Then made me a man to this track.

people not getting that repetition is what Can is all about, repetition and sonic textures... besides, repetition doesn't mean playing exactly the same the same way, you just have to pay attention to the little nuances, the groove works as the driver of this machine traveling through sounds... There's even more repetition in Ravel's Bolero, for instance, and it's a freaking masterpiece

Absolutely, the motorik beat is the framework on which the rest of the song is developed. The dependability of the rhythm in the midst of the other musicians is why it's so good.

PS Damo - 'crazy man shouting on the street' just about sums him up and the whole band. Your observation that it's Willy Wonka's ride except it goes on for 18 minutes nails it. The brilliant thing is, the more you listen to it over the years, the better it gets!

If you're interested in another extremely hypnotic, extended 70s groove, might I nominate "Confusion" by Fela Kuti? Might be my nomination for THE all-time killer beat, and Fela spends the entire first 7 minutes (of 25) slowwwwwwwly, teasingly building up to it.

Remember that this is completely assembled from improvisation, primarily by bass player Holger Czukay; along with all of the overdubs, you can even hear a couple of jarring tape edits. Czukay was limited on bass (something he freely admitted--he even gave up playing bass on their last recordings), but as a student of Karlheinz Stockhausen he likely knew sound and structure best among all of them as well as being a proficient recording engineer and editor.

Thank you! It’s a couple of years since you posted these tracks from this great German band Can. It’s around 30 odd years since I came to them and that came after hearing Holger Czuckay after Can finished. It was his track Persian Love that I have had on repeat mode.ever since. He did a few albums as well as working with a few of English artist like David Sylvia’n

Great to see you enjoying those moments of funky weirdness. This is one of the few albums where the riffs and beats never get old for me. Another album that has a riff that never gets old is 'Dopesmoker' by the band Sleep. One hour long song that grabs you and never lets go.

"Damo … he sounds like a crazy man on the street just yelling at passers-by." That's precisely how he got the job. Jaki and Holger were in a café in Munich and heard a crazy busker on the street outside. They accosted him and said, "Do you want to sing in our band tonight?" He agreed. The rest is history.

It's my favourite album from m y favourite b and. The first four songs, Paperhouse, Mushroom, Oh Yeah and Halleluhwah showcase their brilliance and creativity. Truly amazing that this, their second studio album, was released in August 1971, over 52 years ago, when I was only 14 years old! It's hard to choose one of these four tracks as my album favourite, it alternates between all four to be honest. Karoli's guitar playing and Liebezeit's rythmic drumming are off the scale brilliant. Best rock record ever in my honest opinion. and one that has influenced many many a band . Thanks for the videos JP, I like your format, presentation and content.

I would not try to find a deep sense in Damo's lyrics. Csukay and Liebezeit discovered him in Munich acting as an improvising street musician and that is what he still was doing some years ago: instant composing alone or together with other musicians, music with only one rule that there are no rules.

Post War and Germany was I daresay happy to lose part of it's identity. The radio played US derived bubblegum pop but little did the mainstream know that groups like Neu!, Can, Amon Düül II and many many more were playing a massive part in rejuvenating the German music scene and quickly followed by British acts and French, Italian musicians all getting it. Good came from bad. What an era for music eh. When artists, but almost as important, record labels took risks and we are all the better for it.

I liked the groove. It's repetitive but you need it to be grabbed. It's a question of balance, and if the musicians must play and make their interpretation very carefully, it also depends on the balance in which the listener is at the moment. So I think if you're open to you don't know what to expect, maybe you'll be grabbed. Personally Can is not my kind of thing. I prefer more melodic songs, and least percussive songs. Try Ash ra Temple, Amon Dull II, Harmonia or Xhol Caravan.

Hi JP. DP from UK. Hallelujah, it's over! Sorry, but for me this was way, way, way too long. Loved the drum based groove though; reminded me of 90s Madchester band The Happy Mondays. Was Can ahead of its time, or the Mondays behind the times (a completely different time and space, more like, but they did cover 70s act John Kongos)? Nice jazz piano interlude, but I would have preferred Halleluhwah to be a five or six minute track. I hate to disagree with you, Justin, but I am not charmed by endless repetition. P.S. my song ref above is Jeff Buckley's cover of the Leonard Cohen song.
@hansmahr8627
@hansmahr8627 2 года назад
Repetition (with variations of course) was kind of Can's thing. They would jam for hours on a single beat. Their live performances were insane, trance-inducing. That's why they were so influential for a lot of electronic music producers. Far ahead of their time. But not all of their tracks are like this, there are many shorter ones. Check out Vitamin C, One More Night, I'm so Green or Moonshake. They might be more up your alley.

I’m going to give this song a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ but it may not stay on the playlist because of how long and repetitive it is. I like the drums and I like the overall mood and rhythm and I think there’s lots of potential. I wish that 1) most of song was cut so this could be a short character piece or 2) The band could’ve added some different chords or a whole chord progression or changed up the mood or feeling at times or put in new sections or just developed the ideas in some way. EDIT - I found an edited version on Spotify which is what I will add to the playlist. It may stay there for a while, now!

When that slight break came around the 4 min mark I thought; Great with something else, the opening felt a bit long..... Offcourse since I'm so stubborn I listend through the whole thing, the smart thing would've been to mute the rest of the song... I'm actually slightly aggravated right now. Maybe I'd have liked this song better if I was into drugs or something.

@@progqueen6219 Hi Prog Queen! You are Prog Queen for a reason. You know that much of the greatest prog does not reveal itself on the first listen. You also know that much of the great prog albums reveal their greatness from first song through to the last song. And finally Prog Queen - ask or notice how many commenters here on JustJP at first listen don't yet appreciate what they sometime later - after multiple listens - something in their brain suddenly finds that particular music's 'sweet spot' and from then on they are forever hooked. As our Prog Queen here on JustJP - I bow down to you - please remember your most essential prog lesson - some of the greatest prog does not seem so on the initial listen. Most peoples brains have to relisten even 5-10 times to really understand/grasp/realize what some great prog artists have created. Can (as well as Pink Floyd) are artists that take more time. Thank you for your precious time you bestowed upon me, Your Majesty. Your forever humble servant - VdGGmouse.

@@vdggmouse9512 Hahaha! That really made me laugh, thank you for that ;) On a more serious note, I agree with everything you said. But (and this is the important part) I don't feel I'm obliged to like any music simply because you can put the label "Prog" on it. I have good instincts when it comes to my music tastes. In my case when I don't like something I will usually revisit a while later to see if I still feel the same way as before. Most times nothing has changed, some times they have. But when I actively dislike something like this song, I know it's best to steer clear of it in the future for my own wellbeing. The reactions JP did on Henry Cow was also challenging, but I'd take those songs any day over this to be honest. When it comes to PF I've grown up on a lot of their music, simply because they where so huge at that time (radio, MTV, ++). PF are simply not for me, they have some good songs but not somthing that captures me in the way a lot of other "Prog" acts do. That's just how I feel and not an objective judgement on their music.
