I thought the Fiat looked really cool when I played GT2 as a kid - 6 is the only mainline game I've never played or owned, but I'll be getting to that one eventually! :)
something i missed during my first play-through is that all the race cars start off fitted with hard compound slicks, but have the super-soft available to fit. No need to spend any money, but still ending up with the better slicks :) Great video though.
I will be the first to admit I went flying through there with no abandon as a kid but it wouldn't be fair to the challenge if I cheesed it, unless I absolutely had to. Might come to that for one of these challenges, who knows XD
I applaud you for being genuine with your thoughts, failures & ideas of playing this game. I love it. I have GT 1 & 2 with a PSX that still works plus a PS3 that serves backwards loading games.
This challenge would be really hard if GT2 didn't have such weirdly lenient entry restrictions. 90's r390 into the 80's cup? sure, why not?! r30 silhouette in the sedan cup? yeah, go on then. When I played through back when it came out I couldn't believe it when I realised I didn't need to keep grinding credits to buy relevant cars.
Agreed, and I thought about whether cheesing it like that invalidates the "impossible" part of the challenge or not, but my rule is if the game allows it with no glitching, it's valid. Don't worry, Gran Turismo 3 takes care of that problem, as you will soon see haha
The real fun is seeing is you can beat it with half or ¾ of the hp limit. Super touring with 200-300hp cars is pretty fun. Max upgrading a total shitbox is where its at
As you proved it's not too hard to knock out all of the GT League events in a challenge like this, but it might be hard to do this if you required yourself to do all of the Special Events as well. I think the Historic Car Cup and Lightweight K (which the Lupo would be your only option I could think of to use) would be the hardest in that case.
@2:28 Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo, the fastest production Fiat ever made. 155 mph, stock. 😊 @6:23 It is a JDM Nissan Micra. It is a cheap city car. Ideal for those narrow city streets. @34:28 Yes, but the dragster cars are set up for straight line speed. You can pass them in the corner and cover some distance. @48:56 Ach, the kids these days have to improve their attention span.
Did not know that about the Fiat, very cool! I chuckled at the attention span comment, just wait until you see what I did in the GT3 video. Absolute attention span failure XD
Ok dude. Here's the trick me and my buddy figured out a long time ago when steering with the stick.......push forward on the steering stick while using your thumb left and right for the steering of the car . Think of it like holding an actual steering wheel at the top of the wheel and moving your hand left and right to turn the car. Bottom line, push forward on the stick, rotating it while holding it forward for steering.
I loved the video! I also love hearing your train of thought behind all your decisions to complete the challenge. I just subbed and I can't wait for the next vids.
Thank you! I feel like it makes the story a little more interesting - rather than just say, "here's the winning solution" I want folks to come along for the entire ride and see where their thinking might deviate from mine :)
I once watched a 4 hour video of some dude trying to beat the mainline games of Metal Gear Solid, before the End Dies of old age... so this is nothing. Keep it up, these are interesting videos.
Im just starting the video, but as a kid i remember the GT40 being a beast in this game. It got under a lot of the HP restrictions, and was actually a lot faster than the competition and had great cornering.
Great video. I don't know about you but I love the way these old GT games were presented, with championships that felt like the main event rather than this menu book rubbish. Anyway great content, really enjoy the deep dives into the gift cars, entry requirements etc
License Test times in GTs 1 through 4 vary based on if you have NTSC_J, NTSC-US, or PAL. In most cases PAL is the hardest version with US being the easiest, with the exception of GT2's Rally Time Trials where NTSC_J has much easier times. The Cutting Room Floor has great info about the "Regional Differences." (They are missing the differences for GT3's Time Trials. IIRC, GT1 also had license test demonstrations located in Replay Theater.
The term "bog standard" comes from the slang "bog wheel" which means Bicycle. So in motorbike sales, "bog standard" meant a motorbike that was so standard it might as well be a Bicycle. Obscure origin but in pretty common usage today.
I also just the other day got gold on the first Subaru test going around the circle on my first try also, some of the test are drastically easier while some of them are devastatingly difficult!!
Did you know that the R390 GT1 Road Car was reverse engineered from the race car? Rules back in the day said you need to have at least one homologated car to be able to enter the Le Mans 24h GT1 ( hence the name of the car) class. So Nissan went to Tom Walkinshaw Racing and together they build the LM version ( the 1997) car. after that, they reverse-engineered the race car into the car and got it homologated. This red/bordeaux road car is the original road car. It was rebuilt for the 1998 Le Mans race, most notable is the long heck the car got and its now really nice blue colour.
Thank you - I feel you, I'm working on the GT3 run and that game came out in 2001. I got it on its release day, can't believe how long ago that was now
I always did the license gold stuff first, then did the free races and as much as possible with the S-2000 and moved on from there. Not exactly the same challenge you are doing here but a lot of fun to make it through the game without buying a car. The gift cars do go along way with that. You could have dine the free races in the Honda from what i remember as it just outs similar cars to your own in those races. You made it harder by waiting to do them. I enjoyed the walk through memory lane , might have to hook up the PlayStation and play some Gran Turismo 2 now. Fun video :-)
To clarify from what I remember Free isn't related to horse power in that game it just means there is no license requirement. It is kind of there just to allow people who want to jump straight in and race after buying a car then do the license stuff after the Sunday Cup and part of the Clubman's cup or whatever it's called.
Think of the car sliding while showing 0 MPH like real life. A cars calculates it's speed by wheel spin, it's possible to lock up a cars wheels meaning no spin but the momentum will still cause the car to slide. If you live in an area with a good snow season you will experience this when still learning to drive.
Classic Trial Mountain, with the infamous "Yeet-chicane" By the way.. GT3 will be incredibly hard to beat without spending credits. It is doable, but super-hard
You underestimated how fast the lighter vehicles are in this game when comparing the power-to-weight ratio. The S2000 can carry you much farther than what you think it can. It's one of the most OP cars in the game. I find that a lot of vehicles in GT2 were kinda useless.
Yeah - this challenge was easy enough to where I didn't really have to crunch the numbers that seriously. I tended to err on the side of "what do I know will DEFINITELY work" rather than seeking the most efficient route, if that makes sense.
Its definitely duable. Ironically getting gold in every license test prety much sets you up for beating the game easily. The hardest part would actually be finding low power machines for the extremely low hp races
Yeah it's funny how that works, it's especially true for this game. I don't know if it's true for all of them, but if you'd gotten gold on all of GT2's license tests you could basically dog walk the majority of the game LOL
You haven't completed all the events as there's the manufacturer's events as well needing some vehicles to be road and race versions of them to complete those cups
I wouldn't recommend doing it in GT3 nor GT4 because other challenges couldn't beat it with lesser restrictions on budget mainly being not buying a car
We're going to give it a try anyway, might be impossible but the videos are to just see if they're possible at all - and if not, maybe we'll see how little money you have to spend for it for fun
i remember playing this game as a kid, i thought you needed to have the right nationality car for each of the national races lol. EDIT: 1:09:10, wait, why are you driving with the DPad then? this game supported Dualshocks
The true answer is kind of long but the short answer is that my fine control on sticks is pretty bad, which is why I'm not a great console FPS player - the dpad, and tapping the dpad rapidly kind of worked in a way that slightly moving a stick over would, but it worked better for me. It kinda felt like my sticks had a small dead zone, it was weird and never really felt all that good, so I swapped to d-pad
Thank you for the feedback - the impossible challenge ones will all be pretty long, I think. Once I'm done with these, maybe I'll continue the long form videos with another subject :)
@@djbrohawkwhatever it may be, I just love the editing and the attention to detail + it’s GT1/2 content and you said there will be some more GT3 and I’m guessing maybe 4 as well I love watching the vids to sleep so maybe a super cut version ? 😂 I love long form content
Not sure if it's possible while also respecting the category names of the cars - doing it without buying a car at all might be possible but it would be tough. Might be worth a revisit some day!
@@djbrohawk Yeah, some categories would be painfull, specially the muscle category and classic cars, even after obtaining meta tier cars from these categories. The biggest enemy is the tires for street legal cars. Also, I always wanted to know if the NPCs always uses the same tires than you, cose I never could keep up using simulation (drift) tires.
25:46 Ironically, your Spoon S2000 probably was capable of winning this race. Despite the restriction being 394bhp, the AI opponents themselves are actually only around 290bhp in that race. While that's still more than the Spoon S2000 has, it should still be possible to beat them with good driving (the AI tends to take the final corner of Tahiti Road very wide, making for a very good opportunity to overtake them).
The Spoon is so well balanced and light. It really is a great tool. And Tahiti is one of the races where the AI is much slower than you. It's one of the few tracks on which the dirt doesn't slow you down, so to you it's much wider than for the AI. In the two uphill right left combinations you can win even more time, when you enter blindly on the dirt and hit the perfect moment for swinging the car. I instantly hated the track and then loved it, because getting these two corners right (and the last one as you said) lets you beat much faster opponents.
48:32 - the Pikes Peak course actually does exist, it's far from the full course but the specific section is/was factual in basis (the section between the 13-mile and 16-mile mark in particular is really familiar 😉)
Had no idea that's the section they pulled from. I need to actually go back and drive it in the game just to see what it's like. Kid me had no idea the significance of it haha
I booted up Gran Turismo 1 to quickly check and it did have license demos too, but it's in a weird spot, you need to go out of simulation mode to the replay theater and it'll automatically have replays of all the licenses from the developers. They were amazing back when there was only dial-up internet. After the first game they realized it was a better idea to put demo replays in the license menu. I like how you show all the details in your videos that others skip and I like how you talk about the history of the cars. I don't mind your videos being long, I really like you telling your story and revisiting the career mode in GT2. I'm surprised the challenge got harder and harder at many points but you pulled through. Great work! I'm really looking forward to GT3.
Wow I had no idea those demos were in GT1, that's a great find! Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it! I'll be starting my playthrough of GT3 soon!
I loved this game when it came out. Too bad you never got the Suzuki Escudo Pike's Peak Special. Twin turbo, 2.5L V6, 4WD, and 981 bhp at 1764 lbs. That car broke the game for me and I'll never forget how awesome that car was.
I came to make this exact comment. I remember getting that car when I was like 8 and just smoking everyone. The spoon civic was another one that broke a lot of the game.
The hours I spent as a kid grinding the Sunday Cup races and Grindelwald just to buy that car... and ram it into every opponent on Tahiti road hahaha. Good times!
I've enjoyed later playthroughs more because I have not abused the Suzuki Escudo like I did when the game came out. So many options in GT2, it's kind of a shame how that one hogged the spotlight as a kid (plus discouraged learning to drive in the game).
There was a trick I used and abused with automatic transmission: hold R1 after you downshift to the desired gear before a turn. This way you can accelerate to full revs without changing to a higher gear. Don't know if after GT2 the developers still did it . Might be worth to try it. Also, when doing the licence runs, try not to accelerate to full revs before the start. That will make the wheels to spin and lose precious time. Hope this will help you. Edit: Spelling and unfinished sentence.
Oh man, I didn't even get GT2 until like halfway through the PS2's lifecycle, as I just never got around to upgrading from GT1, but that menu sound is still so nostalgic for me from the very start of the video. Really cool to me to see challenge runs in this series!
Nice Vid, but maybe worth clarifying when you say 'beat Gran Turismo 2' you clearly mean 'beat the GT League'. To my knowledge you cannot 100% the game without buying a single car or spending a single credit because of the dealership events
I meant to clarify that somewhere in the beginning but maybe I forgot to do so...if I didn't, my bad - I'm using speedrun.com rules which basically says "get to the ending credits" (or in this game's case, get to the Congratulations screen after the GT events). Goofy me clarified that in the first GT video I think, too. RIP 100%-ing any of these games are impossible without spending money, sadly
11:51 There is actually a solution to this problem while in manual transmission-you can BUFFER your inputs. Simply hold down the up-shift button while you're in the loading screen, and you should shift into 2nd gear on the very first frame when the license test starts.
@@djbrohawk Yeah, the game never actually tells you this. It's extremely useful to know about since some license tests are much easier to gold while in Manual since you can control when you shift. It's also really annoying that you can't view the stats of the car you're given in each license test. Being able to see exactly what the car's power band is would make it much easier to know when the optimal time to up-shift would be.
I had to drive 1 HR from town to town... I put your video as a background sound and it was pretty fun to listen... I played this game for so long when I was a kid that wasn't hard to go through the price cars and races just by hearing it. Made my trip a lot shorter Ohh, and I'm driving a yellow legacy GTB limited... That I used on that game too. Childhood dream car, and now I'm driving it every day haha
That's awesome! Thanks for the feedback - I do think it's important for me to keep in mind that some people might do what you do, put me on to listen as opposed to just watching. Very cool that you're driving your dream car now! :)
I did enjoy the thought process going on at around the 25 minute mark, knowing where it was going to go and seeing the answer come together in real time 😁
Yeah, I could've tried it - it's just not the way I ended up going, I wanted to be absolutely certain I had a car that could handle it, but that's what makes this fun - my way isn't the only way :)
A fun story losely attached? When I was in highschool, Ifell in love with that game, playing it at a friends house, but never owned a PS1. So, my best friend and I borrowed one over a weekend and also had to rent the game via videothek. Since we only had that one weekend, we played day and night, including endurances, and on Monday the school councelor took as both aside and gave us a long "I know teenage life can be hard, but drugs are no answer"-talk. That's what three days without sleep do to your outward appearance. But what a ride it was.
I do not know about the JP version, but I think that in the European version this challenge is impossible to be done. In that version you need to use the appropriated vehicle for each race! Example: Station wagon in the Station Wagon races; Compact for the Compact car races; etc BTW: great job! :)
I played this game so much in my childhood to the point that I remembered which race had the Super Silhouette despite not having touched this game in years. As for the S2000, I've always wanted to own one, just was never in the cards for me (and especially not now as prices have exploded) - I agree this and GT4 are iconic racing games!
You can clown the Muscle Car races pretty easily. You had the weight and handling advantage for all those races. All the muscle cars are awful at handling and they also are pretty restricted for their top speed. That S2000 was a good car for it. To add you could do the Grand Touring races, it gives you the daisin silvia, the unisia jecs gtr, and castrol nsx. Those races are pretty easy and those cars can go into other races as well.
The cool thing about this is that there's definitely a number of ways to do it - I do like that folks have observed other ways, makes for a fun puzzle :)
It's so great to see those license test again, because they teach you so much, which I wish the game would point out more prominently. The last one in B for instance, you learn how throwing FR cars into the first corner of an s-turn helps them stabilize, as they lean into the suspension. Find the right moment to swing and it perfectly leans in again. Thus, eliminating the d-pad-effect. Great fun to see that again.
This is still my favourite car game of all time and it isn’t even close. By today’s standards the handling is arcade, the configurability, the variety … genuinely, it’s on a different level. I have never found another game that *really* does what this does, only prettier. Never had a PS2, would consider GT3, but didn’t click with GT4, felt the driving model had moved on and not in a good way. Realism in car games is … laughable and always will be. To my mind I’ll always accept something where gratuitous power sliding, or that sweet semi-slide is the fastest, funnest way around a corner, and this game does it better than anything else. My best friend and I played this for untold hours. No analog sticks, not required.
What's about the point of view/camera angle? I haven't watched many of these videos, so, maybe this is kind of sacrosant, but, have you ever considered changing to the chasing perspective? While the bumper camera increases the feel of speed and realism, it seems as if you don't feel the car's movement very well. In real life, your behind does that job. But in GT, without seeing the back of the car, you might lack the feeling for it breaking out. Some of your laps look as if that's what slows you down. Maybe it would be fun to try. Greatings from Germany!
Relatively sure G# is the note the March makes at redline. That's pretty convenient, not sure if that was intentional. (btw, if you want to finesse the right control stick for throttle but you have fingers of butter like I do, what I do is PINCH the stick with my index and thumb (thumb at bottom and index at top), and use my index almost like a chock to stop my thumb from pushing the stick all the way up).
Fun fact: The JGTC cars (most obvious it is with racing Skylines, Supras and NSXs) have too much power in GT2. They're supposed to have a bit less than 500hp and also JGTC Skylines should be FR as well
When it comes to power limits, you spent way too much time searching for the perfect car. Most races can be one with cars much lower in hp than the A.I. and that's often where the fun begins. The biggest problem of GT2, apart from giving away the prize cars way too easy, was that there's hardly any challenging races. You could have won tons with the S2000 and have fun in the process.
If you have a good PS1 controller, or a PS2 controller with a very well taken care of, but very well broke in D pad, steering with it is far superior to the analog stick!!! Analog control did not get good until Gran Turismo4 and then they perfected it in GT5!!!
1:27 I'll have to say about the demonstration videos, they may be useful for just completing the licenses, but once you try to gold all licenses then they aren't that helpful. I recently played and got gold on all licenses on EU region rom and there were a few tests that was very, very hard. After banging my head against the wall for a long time I was like, "alright, I'll take a look at the demonstration" and the demo time was barely silver. At that point you know that some tests are rough when the devs couldn't make a gold time demo.
Fun Fact About GT2 Trial Mountain 30 Lap Endurance Race: There's A Cheating AI Car That Should've Encountered In Your Run... Let's Just Say. A Race Car Was Supposed To Appear On The Racing Grid 😊
Hot take: I’ve never played a bad Gran Turismo game !!! They’re all good and if you’d like to be challenged, then even better !! (although the challenge was watered down a bit in GT6, still had events and trials, that were very challenging!!)
How about this new challenge: Beat GT2 (100%) with NO power upgrades!! Buying tyres, suspension, drivetrain, brakes, racing modification allowed! But you can't go up in hp! Good luck!
Yes, you can absolutely beat this game without ever having to spend a single credit!! There will be some races that are difficult, but if you unlock the right cars as well as get gold, and all the licenses at the beginning, you’ll start off with a few good cars that you can’t buy anyways !!!
You can also use the spoon S2000 to beat the 345HP race of the wagon three series race in special event!! The limit for the horsepower is 392 and the car is well under that and will win !!
I miss the gram turismo games where you had actual races... not this start 30-40 seconds down & slalom through moving roadblocks in an OP cat crap they have now.
Finally stopped after minute 45, since it's not really a challenge, if you don't respect the classes and use new cars in historic events. Thanks anyway.
I like the content length. Nothing wrong with having a long video for people to have on in the background (me) or for some to cruise through. Great stuff here. I’m very much enjoying it. It doesn’t hurt that I have a huge passion for GT2, my childhood’s most played game by a MILE.
B8 is so fucking hard, I tried for hours and hours and I got 0.2 off gold. I can’t do it. 32:40 one of the few good things about later Gt games is that most race cars are locked away until you actually progress through the game, you don’t get them until hours in. Seems much more satisfying in progression.
yeah - I think they were kinda feeling themselves out for the first couple of games, there are some prize cars that were a little too powerful and too easily obtained, but as we've seen with GT7, their values aren't necessarily the same as someone who takes the game(s) super seriously I believe you can get gold on B8 - some of these tests were brutal, but my take is always "If you can get close to a time, you can get the time"!
